Reporter’s Notebook: iPhone 4s, iOS 5 worth the hype
Apple has once again lived up to the slogan “best iPhone yet” in
its newest iteration and operating system version rolled out about
two weeks ago.
Upgrading from the iPhone 3Gs, there are vast hardware
improvements, but once current iPhone 4 users upgrade to iOS 5 -
the new operating system – most of the benefits become
available.
Most were expecting an iPhone 5, especially the blogging techies
and technology pundits, with a new form factor and radical changes.
Apple, though, saw fit to only deliver a speedy version – months
behind anticipated schedule. Upgrading from earlier iPhone versions
should be considered a “no brainer” for Apple fans, but for iPhone
4 owners, as long as users upgrade to iOS 5 – available for free to
all users with at least a 3Gs model – the only missing pieces are
speedier processors and Apple’s revolutionary inclusion of Siri’s
voice command functions.
When deciding whether I would purchase the 4s or opt for an
Android competitor, like the Samsung Galaxy S II or the Nexus, I
figured if I decided on the iPhone, the coolest function I would
never use would be the new voice command systems. However, after
nearly two weeks, Siri is a part of my daily life. I haven’t texted
behind the wheel, even while stopped at a red light, since the new
Apple iDevice landed in my eager hands.
Giving commands to the phone in common language, rather than the
robotic method all other phones require, is a breathe of fresh air.
Siri is intertwined with the new operating system. Directions,
songs and Google-worthy questions are all just a simple voice
command away. The best part? “It just works,” to steal a line from
Apple. Out of the box, it was surprisingly accurate and after
prolonged use, Apple’s promise of learning your voice syntax and
diction was also as on point.
The other major development: A brand new high-def 8 megapixel
camera. I’ve used the iPhone 4′s 5 megapixel camera and have seen
images on the new “Retina” high-def screen – also present on the 4s
- and the pictures were good, but the newest version blew me away.
As an amateur photographer who sometimes dreads lugging a DSLR and
multiple lenses around to events that are supposed to be more fun
than work, the new camera will more than suffice.
The ability alone to take HDR shots – two pictures taken nearly
simultaneously at different contrast levels and then stitched
together – is simply amazing and something usually only common in
high-end cameras. Although iOS 4.1 allowed HDR photography for the
iPhone 4, the new camera and software were built to take even more
advantage of the dual digital picture technology. But advanced
photography not withstanding, the 3 megapixel bump over iPhone 4
and the addition of a f/2.4 fixed focal point lens is revolutionary
in a mobile device that can instantly e-mail, text or FaceBook
images. Not to mention, video capturing is at full 1080p HD at
30fps, significantly eclipsing its predecessor.
The new iPhone also sports the same dual-core A5 processors that
inhabit Apple’s iPad 2. Although the RAM is the same between both
the iPhones using the “4″ moniker, the processors alone make a
massive difference when multitasking or running processor-intensive
programs like photo editing or video games.
Apple’s new mobile gadget isn’t a true “4G” Internet device, but
the mobile speeds are considerably faster, specifically on my
ATT model with its new HSPA+ broadband network.
Aside from the new hardware unveiled, the operating system could
easily steal the show. The cleaner interface, smoother
multitasking, addition of a reminders app that can give you
notifications based on your geographic location, free texting
between iPhone users, a new notifications management system and
most notoriously to anyone who has seen an iPhone 4s commercial,
the Cloud.
Of the more than 200 new additions in iOS 5, the Cloud is easily
the biggest addition. Apple has finally cut the cord, so to speak.
No longer do users need to constantly sync their contacts, e-mails,
notes, documents or pretty much anything else on an iDevice via a
computer, iTunes and a cable. Your device will constantly update
your pictures and other vital information to your “cloud” that will
be downloaded to any of your other devices linked to that account.
Never again will you have to worry about losing phone numbers,
addresses or pictures. Even when updating future iterations of the
operating system, your new iOS 5 device will be able to handle the
task without being connected to a computer.
Former MobileMe customers might be skeptical, but this time it
actually works.
I upgraded my old 3GS to iOS 5 before going on vacation and
purchasing my new phone. Since everything was already synched to
the Cloud, upon starting the phone for the first time, it asked if
I would like to log in to my account and sync my phones. I figured
it might half work or attempt to create a mirror version of my
phone, but to my surprise, everything it was supposed to sync
worked. The only downfall Apple might need to address in the future
is synching music between devices, but because of the high cost of
mobile bandwidth and potential size of a music library, it is
understandable that music synching could be some time off.
The bottom line: If you have an older iPhone or smartphone, or
are just joining the latest craze in mobile computers – welcome to
2005 – this is definitely a strong choice. There are comparable
competitors that should be looked at, but after years of dealing
with Apple, when the Cupertino-based company says something would
“just work,” it’s (usually) always true. For those with relatively
new Android phones or the iPhone 4, consider holding off until the
mythical unicorn that is iPhone 5 appears. The biggest let down,
besides a new form factor and bloggers’ unreasonable graphics
expectations, is that the screen is still only 3.5 inches large, as
opposed to some of the considerably larger Android handsets.
Regardless, all Apple users should be on iOS 5 and benefiting from
our newly unplugged life.
Note: Some retailers in Midland have said it could take up to a
month to receive the iPhone 4s. Currently on Apple’s website, one
can be obtained within one to two weeks.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Experts Predict LTE Capable iPhone in 2012
Industry insiders expect Apple to adopt 4G LTE capabilities for the iPhone by 2012 as major carriers in the United States set up new LTE networks.
Technology
Digitimes, a technology website, reported through several sources that Apple is “expected to join the LTE club in 2012.”
Prior rumors have also speculated that the next-generation iPhone will feature LTE capability.
The recently released iPhone 4S has been advertised as having 4G-like speeds on its GSM network due to an updated HSDPA compatible antenna. However, the CDMA network, on which carriers Sprint and Verizon are powered, run at slightly slower speeds.
LTE capability would bring theoretical download speeds of up to 14.4Mbps to all U.S. carriers of the iPhone. Currently, there are approximately 35 LTE networks on-line worldwide.
There are expected to be more than 100 networks by 2012, reaching 290 million people and propelling LTE smartphone sales to over 154 million units, according to Digitimes.

At a quarterly conference call earlier this year, then Chief Operating Officer for Apple, Tim Cook explained that the company has not adopted LTE capability for the iPhone due to a number of issues with the current technology, including poor battery life.
“The first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not willing to make,” said Cook.
Cook is Apple’s current CEO.

iPhone 4S battery drain – Is it the handset or iOS 5 that’s at fault?
I’m hearing a lot of complaints from iPhone owners, specifically owners of the new 4S handset, who claim that they’re not getting good mileage from their battery. But is it the iPhone 4S that’s to blame, or iOS 5?
Want to get more from your iPhone battery? Check out these iOS 5 battery saver tips!
Sascha Segan of PCMag carries out a test, putting a new iPhone 4S running iOS 5 up against an iPhone 4 running iOS 4 and another running iOS 5. The results are interesting in that basically there’s little difference in the time taken for the battery to run out between the three handsets.
- iPhone 4/iOS 5 – 6 hrs 55 mins
- iPhone 4S/iOS 5 – 7 hrs 27 mins
- iPhone 4/iOS 4 – 7 hrs 29 mins
Here’s a timelapse video of the three handsets … I warn you in advance, it’s not that exciting!
Conclusion – It’s iOS 5, not the iPhone 4S.
But … it’s not that clear cut. I’m hearing from some iPhone 4S owners who aren’t seeing any problems, and others who are seeing their battery literally drain away in front of their eyes. Other people are seeing the same issue on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS with iOS 5, while others aren’t seeing any problems at all. Something is going on, that’s for sure, but it’s hard to put a finger on what the issue actually is. Personally, I think the problem comes down to usage, which means that Apple will have to rely on telemetry sent from handsets to narrow down the cause.

iPhone 4S heading to Hong Kong and South Korea Nov 11
The iPhone 4S has been Apple’s fastest selling handset yet and will soon weave its magic on more of the world’s population as the company has announced that it’s going to be available in 15 additional markets, with Hong Kong and South Korea being the two key ones, starting November 11. Other countries where November will see customers queueing around the block to get their hands on one include; Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal and Romania.
Despite not living up to the hype that had been built up over the months leading up to its release, where many thought it would be the iPhone 5 and offer more groundbreaking specs, it has done pretty well for itself. Even though there have been problems reported with its battery life and the talkative Siri, which apparently has trouble understanding strong accents, Apple’s fans passion for the device has remained undimmed.
Although many users have reported a battery which drains unusually fast it has been suggested that the problem is more to do with the operating system than the phone. Owners of the iPhone 4 and iPad have made similar complaints since upgrading to iOS 5. The benefits seem to outweigh the complaints, reminiscent of last year’s ‘Anntenagate’, and the iPhone 4S offers a dual-core processor the usual choices of internal memory and an 8mp camera with 1080p HD video recording.
Even with the fact that it’s on a par with the best Android handsets out there rather than surpassing them to many in the US just having an Apple branded phone is enough. ATT recently reported seeing huge demand for the iPhone 3GS, the first Apple handset to be offered for free on a contract.
Currently the iPhone 4S is available in 29 countries a number which is set to increase to 70 by the end of the year.

FastUnlock Team Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5
The Fast Unlock iPhone Team has released updated version of both FastRa1n to unlock and Untethered jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4 using untethered exploit. As promised on Twitter a few days ago, the Fast Unlock iPhone Team released a beta of FastRa1n for Mac to provide an untethered jailbreak iPhone 4 solution for iOS 5. Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.7b1 should allow you to unlock jailbreak your iPhone 4 iOS 5, iPad and iPod touch 4th gen without having to pl u g your device in your computer on each reboot or shutdown. iPhone 3G, old-bootrom iPod touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3GS owners don’t need this new Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 as they already have an untethered jailbreak.
To Unlock and Jailbreak Your iPhone Visit The Official Website www.FastUnlockiPhone.com This beta version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (or as the FastUnlockiPhone.com calls it, the “backup plan”) is meant for testers willing to provide useful feedback on this new jailbreak. To use it, you’ll need iOS 5 beta 3 hashes saved on Cydia and the iOS 5 beta 2 IPSW file saved on your computer. In this beta the bluetooth functionality is disabled, the task switcher will make the Springboard crash and the iPod player is only enabled on the iPod touch 4th gen. Last week it was possible to jailbreak iOS 5 with some PwnageTool bundles. Still, that requires some work, and the jailbreak was tethered. Tethered sucks for iPhone as it means you must physically plu g your device into your computer on reboot. Not great for a phone, especially when on the road. The jailbreak this time around is easy. First, you must download Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 for your OS. The dev-team has the necessary links here. It’s always best to turn to them for the official links rather than anything else posted. iOS 5 untethered jailbreak released finally. The iPhone FastUnlockiPhone.com has just released Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.6rc9 which brings untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 so you don’t need to plu g in your iPhone every time you reboot it. Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.6rc9 is based on i0n1c’s untethered exploit. Check out the supported devices after the jump. The FastUnlockiPhone.com reports that Apple did not fix the hole by @i0n1c’s untether and this is when he ported a certain code over to 5’s kernel, we visited iDB and they mention via the FastUnlockiPhone.com blog that if you are a ultrasn0w unlocker it is best of you steer clear of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 and only update firmware via custom IPSW, there will be a version of PwnageTool within this week. We would love to know if anyone is having problems updating to 5 throu gh saurik’s server, apparently it has been su ggested that users remove the gs.apple.com entry in your hosts file as this will restore directly to Apple’s servers. Even thou gh Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 offers the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 the new jailbreak will give you more of a stable untethered solution. Come back to us a little later because we will give you the how to jailbreak with Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (Join us on Facebook or Twitter for instant updates), we would love to know if you will be jailbreaking the new iOS 5 with Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5. The commenting area is below this article so please do use it. As you can see, the Dev-Team is still recommending that only “testers” use this solution. Currently, a more stable, albeit tethered jailbreak solution is available in the form of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.7RC8. However, as this is a “tethered” solution, jailbroken iDevice owners will have to boot their iPhone via Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 whenever it powers down, in order to maintain jailbreak app functionality. The great thing about the newer versions of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 is that they support the iPhone 4 and iPad. Previously, an untethered solution was only available for “legacy” devices such as the iPhone 3G.Even thou gh this most recent version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (untethered) is recommended only for “testers,” it does point toward an upcoming final version of the jailbreak tool. For now, I’m staying away from the untethered version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5. Instead, the tethered solution works very well – it only gets mildly annoying if your iPhone runs out of power.

iPhone 4S upgrade – 5 ways to transfer your data
So, you’ve decided to upgrade to an iPhone 4S. Now for the sticky matter of transferring all your contacts, texts, pictures, videos and music. It can be a little painful, particularly if you’re coming from an Android phone or some other platform. We’ve got five methods that should ensure minimal disruption.
Backup
If you’re upgrading from an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4 (or any other iPhone for that matter) the faithful old computer-based backup remains a fine option. Just hook your phone up to your computer, go into iTunes and select the backup option. Once you have everything you need, it’s a simple matter of plugging your new iPhone 4S, at which point you’ll be prompted to restore all your carefully accumulated data to your shiny new phone.
iCloud
Your other option if upgrading from an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 is to rely on the newfangled iCloud. Assuming you’ve activated it after having updated to iOS 5 (just enable backup in Settings iCloud Backup Storage) all your data will be whizzing about in Apple’s secure servers. Just remember that your phone will only update this data store automatically when it’s plugged into a power source, has a Wi-Fi connection and is not in use i.e. it has to be locked. When you get your iPhone 4S, you’ll be able to ”Restore from iCloud Backup” when you go through the Setup Assistant.
YOU SHOULD READ — iPhone 4S review
Cloud services
Of course, iCloud isn’t the first and only cloud-based data transfer solution – which is good news if you’re coming from Android, for example. Services like Flickr will preserve your photos online for access from any new phone (and there’s an iPhone app for it too), while if you’re using Gmail for email and calendar then all of the information will be in the cloud. Your iPhone 4S will play perfectly nicely with these when you setup email. Follow this guidance to have your Gmail contacts synced too.
If you’ve been using something like Amazon MP3 on Android for your music, your best bet is to log in on your computer and sync your purchases with iTunes (you can download the Amazon MP3 downloader from Amazon that will handle that for you).
Contact transfer apps
There are various non-cloud based apps on the App Store that cater for those wishing to back up their data and transfer it across Apple devices. We’d recommend something like My Contacts Backup for – you guessed it – backing up your contacts. It does so through a simple email-based system, so you’ll always have a copy of your contact data to hand.
Vodafone Tech Team
For Vodafone customers, the solution is even simpler. It’s just launched the Tech Team initiative, which provides “free expert technical help and advice available for all customers online, on the phone and in-store”. Even better than that, though, it also supplies each Vodafone store with a so-called ‘Red Box’. This piece of wonder-kit can transfer contacts, texts, pictures, videos and music between devices while you wait. It even works on different mobile operating systems across some 3,500 different devices.
Pop into your local Vodafone store to take advantaged of this Red Box, and transfer that precious data the easy way.

China Mobile Attracts 5 Million iPhone Users, Without Apple Deal
China Mobile is doing its best to get around Apple’s refusal to offer iPhones for its 3G network. China Mobile, the world’s largest carrier by number of subscribers, has managed to hold on to its high-end customers by offering extensive Wi-Fi hotspots and other incentives.
The company is advertising and lining up enticements to bring iPhone users to the carrier, even though there is not a signed agreement with Apple to offer an iPhone for use on its 3G network yet.
Chinese smartphone users are being offered gift cards worth up to $440 and widespread Wi-Fi services. China Mobile announced it will increase the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the country to 1 million in the next three years.
The strategy seems to have been working, as Wang Jianzhou, China Mobile chairman, announced that the company had almost doubled the number of iPhone users in its network in just four months. Now, with 9.5 million iPhone users, China Mobile has surpassed its rival China Unicom, and that despite the fact that China Unicom is the only Chinese carrier approved by Apple to sell iPhones within the largest mobile market in the world.
iPhone users cannot enjoy 3G speeds on China Mobile’s network, as Apple hasn’t released a compatible version yet, though they can use the 2G voice and WiFi data networks.

JP Morgan cuts target price for HTC
Taipei, Nov. 1 (CNA) J.P. Morgan has lowered its target price for Taiwan’s HTC Corp. to NT$690 (US$22.9) from NT$800, as the world’s No. 5 smartphone maker gave a worse-than-expected revenue forecast for the fourth quarter.
During a conference call a day earlier, HTC told investors that its fourth-quarter revenue would drop 3-9 percent quarter-on-quarter, a “big miss” compared to past performance over the past five years (up 26 percent quarter-on-quarter on average) and the Bloomberg consensus (up 10 percent QoQ), the brokerage wrote in a note released Monday. Despite a big wave of product launches in the fourth quarter such as the Sensation XE, HTC was vulnerable to the big iPhone launch and expected to ship only about 12 million to 13 million smartphones in the period, J.P. Morgan said. “Apple’s upward revision for iPhone 4S by over 5 million units for 4Q means someone has to lose in such a weak economy,” the brokerage said. “This time, Apple is taking a fast-time-to-market launch instead of the phased launch of the past. Thus the impact on its rivals will be sharpest in the first quarter, and should diminish thereafter,” it added. Because of the fourth quarter jolt from the new iPhone’s launch, HTC’s full-year shipments will only reach 47 million to 48 million units, missing its previous forecast of 50 million units, J.P. Morgan said. Although HTC said there will be a few LTE (long-term evolution) models launched later in the October-to-December quarter, the weak economy could limit sales of the LTE phones considering their high average selling price, it noted. Shares of HTC closed down 4.23 percent at NT$657 on Tuesday. (By Jeffrey Wu) ENDITEM/ls

iPhone 5 release date, iPhone 4S battery, iPad 3 screen: vital answers
November 1, 2011 by Bill Palmer
by Bill Palmer
From the upcoming iPhone 5 to the existing iPhone 4S to the percolating iPad 3, each of Apple’s current and on-deck iProducts comes with its own vital question. For the iPhone 5, it’s a matter of release date, now up in the air after so many years of iPhone launch windows having been predictable. For the iPhone 4S, the supposed “battery bug” is at the center of attention. And for the iPad 3, rather predictably arriving in March, the vital question becomes whether its screen can be upgraded to the same Retina Display quality which the smaller iPhone has offered for nearly a year and a half. Sure, each product has other secondary questions (4G LTE on the iPhone 5, redesigned body on the iPad 3, and so on). But the collective zeitgeist most often focuses in on one issue per product, from the iPhone 4 antenna hoax to initial iPad 2 inventory shortages. And in the case of the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPad 3, here are answers regarding the vital question surrounding each…
iPhone 5 release date: Until this year, Apple had launched a new iPhone generation every summer since 2007. All bets are off now, as the iPhone 4S arrived in October after evidence had pointed all year to the iPhone 5 arriving this year instead. So now the generational spread and the launch timeframe are out the window. Apple could give the 4S a full year and save the iPhone 5 release date for next October. Or it could restore the summer launch window by moving the iPhone 5 to a WWDC 2012 arrival. Or, if the current strong iPhone 4S sales don’t hold up so well after the holidays, it could release the iPhone 5 as soon as next spring. As we said, all bets are off. In any case, expect the iPhone 4S to stick around in the iPhone 5 era. Speaking of the iPhone 4S…
iPhone 4S battery issue: Last year, a handful of disgruntled individuals concocted an “iPhone 4 antenna defect” which never existed. All smartphones can be squeezed in one unnatural way or another so as to knock a bar or two off their reception, and the cretins who invented the antenna hoax took full advantage of the fact that most of the public isn’t aware of it. Even after Steve Jobs himself got onstage and demonstrated that all smartphones are the same when it comes to antenna grips, it was still mis-reported that he got up on stage and “admitted the iPhone 4 antenna issue existed” which a flat-out lie. But then, the jackasses who created the iPhone 4 antenna hoax were for the most part the same jackasses who write tech headlines. Not until Apple gave these cretin headline writers a free iPhone cases did they finally cease their smear campaign. So it’s tough to put a gauge on just how real or fake this newly supposed “iPhone 4S battery bug” might be. We’ve had a small number of reports from readers who say they’ve been affected by the issue, which means the issue ie likely affecting only a small minority of iPhone 4S users. And yet many headlines claim that the issue is affecting all iPhone 4S users, which is immediately verifiable as being false. Either way, it’ll all go away when Apple releases iOS 5.0.1 and whatever fraction of iPhone 4S users who’ve seen swift battery drain will be rescued. In the mean time, Apple-hating headline writers will continue to intentionally overblow the issue in the name of trying to scare people out of buying Apple products.
iPad 3 screen: Among the litany of questions regarding the iPad 3, from what it’ll look like to what new hardware features it’ll offer to what flavor of iOS 5.x it’ll run, the most hyped at the moment is what level of quality its screen will offer. Apple managed to get the screen resolution on the iPhone 4 and 4S so high that it’s as dense as the human eye can detect (hence the “Retina Diplay” moniker), meaning that the iPhone 5 needn’t offer an even higher resolution screen as no one would be able to tell the difference. But owing to its much larger screen size, the iPad 2 hasn’t gotten to that level just yet. There’s some talk that the new iPad 3 might simply be “HD” or high definition, rather than fully reaching the upper end of what the human eye can see with Retina Display. Either way, expect the iPad 3 screen to be an improvement over the iPad 2 – the vital question is by how much. One thing we do know about the iPad 3 is that it should see release before the iPhone 5. Here’s more on the iPad 3. Here’s more on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.
