Microsoft raking in 100k users a day from easier Hotmail setup in iOS 5

By Josh Ong

Published: 02:43 AM EST (11:43 PM PST)

The addition of easier Hotmail setup in the Mail app of Apple’s iOS 5 has led to a surge in activations for Microsoft, with almost 100,000 new iOS 5 devices logging in to the email service every day.

Microsoft’s Chris Jones revealed in an official blog post on Wednesday that over 2 million iOS 5 users have linked their Hotmail accounts to iPhones or iPads. That number continues to increase rapidly, at the rate of nearly 100,000 iOS 5 devices a day.

The majority of those devices are iPhones. 40 percent are using the iPhone 4 to log in, while 24 percent already have the iPhone 4S. Another 12 percent of Hotmail connections to iOS 5 come from the iPhone 3GS.

Pre-iOS 5 devices can still set up Hotmail, but they have to go through a slightly more complicated Microsoft Exchange setup process.

News of the Redmond, Wash., software company’s success comes as rival Google has faced a backlash over its official Gmail app. After reports surfaced on Tuesday pointing to an imminent launch of a long-awaited native app for Gmail, Google released the application on Wednesday, but quickly pulled it when a bug in the software’s push notification feature was discovered.

Users who had obtained the app before it was taken down were quick to pan it as half-baked. TechCrunch’s Sarah Perez called it “unusable” and a big disappointment.” Others pointed out that, since the program was just a wrapper around the UIWebView, it offered little more than buggy push notifications.

According to research group ComScore, Hotmail is the world’s largest web-based email service, with Yahoo Mail in second and Gmail in third. Apple is also pushing its own email service as part of iCloud. Users who sign up for iCloud receive a free me.com email account that will automatically sync messages across all their devices.

However, some users report having trouble creating new me.com accounts or merging old MobileMe accounts with their AppleIDs.

Also, Microsoft’s not the only company to see a jump in users due to iOS 5. Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said last month that iOS signups jumped by more than three times previous rates following the release of iOS 5. Apple worked closely with Twitter to integrate the social network at a system-wide level for iOS 5.

Apple.

Apple today announced that iPhone 4S will be available in New Zealand and 14 additional countries on Friday, 11 November. Customers will be able to pre-order iPhone 4S beginning on Friday, 4 November.

The updated iOS 5 includes Notification Center, a way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption and iMessage, a new messaging service that lets users easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5 users. iOS 5 will also be available as a free software update for iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS customers.

iPhone 4S includes a new camera with the advanced optics. iPhone 4S includes a new custom lens, a larger f/2.4 aperture and an advanced hybrid IR filter that produce sharper, brighter and more accurate images. The Apple-designed image signal processor in the A5 dual-core chip is built for performance, and coupled with the features built into iOS 5, makes the camera one of the fastest on any phone. With iPhone 4S, the Camera app launches much faster.

New features in the Camera and Photos apps give you instant access to the camera right from the lock screen, and you can also use the volume-up button to quickly snap a photo. Optional grid lines help line up your shot and a simple tap locks focus and exposure on one subject; and the new Photos app lets you crop, rotate, enhance and remove red-eye, and organize your photos into albums right on your device to share them on the go.

Beginning Friday, 11 November, iPhone 4S will be available in Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, El Salvador, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Malta, Montenegro, New Zealand, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Romania and South Korea. iPhone 4S is available today in 29 countries around the world and will be available in more than 70 countries by the end of the year.

iPhone 4S comes in either black or white for a recommended retail price of NZ$ 1,049 for the 16GB model, NZ$ 1,199 for the 32GB model and NZ$ 1,349 for the new 64GB model. The company says iPhone 4S will be sold through the Apple Online Store and select Apple Authorised Resellers.

The iPhone 4 is now available for NZ$ 899 and iPhone 3GS is available for NZ$599.

Take Me To Post Comment Form

Finally the search for an unlock and untethered jailbreak ios 5 mobile operating sistem released by Apple few days ago, it’s over. The FastUnlockiPhone.com Team has released FastRa1n a jailbreak iPhone 4 ios 5 untethered and unlock tool. The name of the ios 5 jailbreak and unlock tool is FastRa1n 0.5 , a very easy to use software. Many members and iPhone fans has confirmed that FastRa1n is stable and it can easy jailbreak and unlock the new iOS 5 and you will be able to install cydia.

To Jailbreak and Unlock your iPhone Visit the Official website www.FastUnlockiPhone.com

An iPhone unlock fan sad: “Fast Unlock iPhone Team is the only that ACTUALLY worked on my iOS 5.0 iPhone 4″ and ” and another “Your iPhone iOS 5.0 Jailbreaking software was my final try to unlock my iphone 4 and it worked! I’ve recommended your software to others.” this are only a few satisfied FastRa1n users, most peoples are so amazed on how easy is now to jailbreak and unlock the new iOS 5 on iPhone 4.

What is FastRa1n Untethered Jailbreak?
Untethered jailbreak is inverse of tethered jailbreak, means that you have your iPhone 4 ios 5 device jailbroken for life. You don’t need to tether your device with computer in order to boot it. So untethered jailbreak is recommended. Until now we had only tethered jailbreak but now that FastRa1n has been released we can finally jailbreak our iPhones.

The FastRa1n untethered jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 and unlock tool will install cydia on your iPhone. Cydia is a big name when it comes to iPhones. Some say it is what makes Apple’s iPhone and other iOS devices as open as possible, letting people install apps from a wide range of providers. Some say it is a hack for the iPhone which lets you customize the phone according to your needs. Some say many other things about Cydia.
Cydia is much like the Installer.app for iPhone. If you have used the Installer before, or tried to configure it, you’d be somewhat familiar with Cydia too. Cydia is a third-party, independent installer for your iPhone. Much like the Apple’s iTunes App Store, Cydia brings you bucket loads of applications to download for free or for money. It is a giant repository collection – which offers apps from various community sources across the web right to your iPhone so you get much more options to choose from.

PANIC OVER! Apple confirms iPhone 4S/iOS 5 battery problem, promises fix

Apple has confirmed that some users of the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 are experiencing poor battery life as a result of a software bugs, and promises that a fix is on the way.

Want to get more from your iPhone battery? Check out these iOS 5 battery saver tips!

The following statement was released by Apple:

“A small number of customers have reported lower-than-expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life, and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”

Apple has already pushed iOS 5.0.1 out to developers, and this, according to a developer who wishes to remain nameless, this update includes fixes for the battery issue (along with a few multitouch gestures only available on the iPad 2).

Panic over, people!

See, here’s the deal. Every new version of iOS seems to have had battery issues following release. That’s what you’ve been telling me anyway. These problems usually disappear with the x.0.1 release of iOS. I’ve been telling my readers this, but other outlets (places that know better) have whipped people into a needless panic over this. Yes, it’s an annoying bug, but it’s a bug, and it’s fixable through a software update.

If Apple follows the normal pattern, I the new iOS 5 update to appear in the next couple of weeks.

Square Adds A Nifty iOS 5 Feature And Makes A Few Improvements To Their Card …

Square Adds A Nifty iOS 5 Feature And Makes A Few Improvements To Their Card Case App

Released to the App Store back in August, the Square Card Case app makes paying for some purchases much more convenient than before. Arriving in v1.1 is a new hands-free feature for those who’ve moved to iOS 5, some additional management options, a few previous feature improvements, and more.

If you have an iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 upgraded to iOS 5, it’s likely you’re already enjoying the tons of new features. What you may not realize is many of the abilities Apple has integrated into their default apps and used to offer new apps can help enhance third-party software. The most relevant of these new core features in regard to the Card Case app is geofencing.

Geofencing is the action of creating a virtual perimeter or fence around a geographic location, in this case, a business. This concept should sound very familiar as it’s used by social check-in services like Facebook Places and Foursquare. The biggest difference is that iOS 5 manages geofencing at a core level of the OS, allowing apps to provide location-based reminders without being active. Basically, you can authorize the Square Card Case app to open your tab as you enter the store and provide necessary account details to the merchant at checkout without taking your iPhone out of your pocket. As before, simply tell the cashier your name, let them do a quick verification of identity by photo, and you’re off.

In addition to that neat new feature, Square Card Case v1.1 includes improvements to the merchant directory, adds the option to remove a card from your case, automatically backs up your list of cards to the server, allows merchants to update their cards with more information about their business, plus the normal maintenance.

Square Card Case is designed for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.1 or later, and available in the App Store as a free download. Certain features, such as automatic tab opening, require an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 or later. Continued use of GPS functions can result in much higher than normal battery drain.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Sprint Happy with iPhone Investment

Sprint reported that the iPhone has been extremely successful on its network thus far.

  • Technology

Sprint’s Chief Executive Dan Hesse announced at a recent third-quarter conference call that investing in the iPhone was “worth every penny,” as the smartphone consumes approximately 50 percent less data compared to many Android handsets.

According to Hesse, this has allowed Sprint to retain its unlimited 3G data plans for smartphones. Sprint is the only major network that provides unlimited data plans for its smartphones.

“One of the beauties of carrying the iPhone is it extends the period of time and increases the likelihood of us maintaining unlimited data longer because it uses our network so efficiently,” said Hesse to Forbes after the post-earnings call.

Just before the iPhone 4S was unveiled on Oct. 4, news broke that Sprint was completing a deal with Apple to acquire the iPhone.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Sprint had agreed to buy 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years, paying $20 billion for the bundle, at current rates, regardless of whether the phones sell.

Industry experts suggest that Sprint is paying up to 40 percent more than the industry average in subsidies, meaning each iPhone handset costs the company $200. They also projected that Sprint might not see profits for the iPhone until 2014.

However, Hesse noted that the iPhone has been a great benefit to Sprint.

“Our early results selling the iPhone and iPhone 4 confirm the iPhone’s ability to attract new customers,” Hesse said.

During the Oct. 14 release of the iPhone 4S, Sprint reported breaking its record for best day of sales by 1 p.m. EST.

Sprint reported that it expects a $7 million to $8 million boost in revenue due to high demand for the iPhone coupled with the fact that iPhone users tend to pay more for monthly service.

Apple confirms iOS 5 / iPhone 4S battery issues

Since early after iOS 5 was released several weeks ago for iPhone, users have complained of battery issues, and today it’s become officially confirmed by an Apple representative that not only are there several bugs, they’re working to fix them all up in a single patch to be released soon. We’ve addressed this concern ourselves this past week and have confirmed that just a single switch in the settings panel alleviates much of the concern. What Apple has apparently spoken to The Loop today is that they’ll be sending out a bug fix inside a few weeks.

The fix that we’ve found is to simply flip the Setting Time Zone switch and you should see instant results. As for what Apple has noted, the following was sent out to Jim Darlymple earlier today:

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” – Apple Representative

Have a peek at the fix from earlier, let us know how that goes, and otherwise wait for the big bug update to be coming inside a few weeks. Aside from the bug(s) found here, the iPhone 4S and the rest of the iOS 5-laden devices appear to have quite good battery life. Have a peek at our original iPhone 4S review for more information on Apple’s newest smartphone.

Fast Unlock iPhone Team Unlock iPhone 4 iOS 5

The Fast Unlock iPhone Team has released updated version of both FastRa1n to unlock and Untethered jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4 using untethered exploit. As promised on Twitter a few days ago, the Fast Unlock iPhone Team released a beta of FastRa1n for Mac to provide an untethered jailbreak iPhone 4 solution for iOS 5. Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.7b1 should allow you to unlock jailbreak your iPhone 4 iOS 5, iPad and iPod touch 4th gen without having to plu g your device in your computer on each reboot or shutdown. iPhone 3G, old-bootrom iPod touch 2nd gen and iPhone 3GS owners don’t need this new Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 as they already have an untethered jailbreak.

To Unlock and Jailbreak Your iPhone Visit The Official Website www.FastUnlockiPhone.com

This beta version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (or as the FastUnlockiPhone.com calls it, the “backup plan”) is meant for testers willing to provide useful feedback on this new jailbreak. To use it, you’ll need iOS 5 beta 3 hashes saved on Cydia and the iOS 5 beta 2 IPSW file saved on your computer. In this beta the bluetooth functionality is disabled, the task switcher will make the Springboard crash and the iPod player is only enabled on the iPod touch 4th gen. Last week it was possible to jailbreak iOS 5 with some PwnageTool bundles. Still, that requires some work, and the jailbreak was tethered. Tethered sucks for iPhone as it means you must physically plu g your device into your computer on reboot. Not great for a phone, especially when on the road.

The jailbreak this time around is easy. First, you must download Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 for your OS. The dev-team has the necessary links here. It’s always best to turn to them for the official links rather than anything else posted. iOS 5 untethered jailbreak released finally. The iPhone FastUnlockiPhone.com has just released Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.6rc9 which brings untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 so you don’t need to plu g in your iPhone every time you reboot it. Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.6rc9 is based on i0n1c’s untethered exploit. Check out the supported devices after the jump. The FastUnlockiPhone.com reports that Apple did not fix the hole by @i0n1c’s untether and this is when he ported a certain code over to 5’s kernel, we visited iDB and they mention via the FastUnlockiPhone.com blog that if you are a ultrasn0w unlocker it is best of you steer clear of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 and only update firmware via custom IPSW, there will be a version of PwnageTool within this week.

We would love to know if anyone is having problems updating to 5 throu gh saurik’s server, apparently it has been su ggested that users remove the gs.apple.com entry in your hosts file as this will restore directly to Apple’s servers. Even thou gh Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 offers the tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 the new jailbreak will give you more of a stable untethered solution. Come back to us a little later because we will give you the how to jailbreak with Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (Join us on Facebook or Twitter for instant updates), we would love to know if you will be jailbreaking the new iOS 5 with Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5. The commenting area is below this article so please do use it. As you can see, the Dev-Team is still recommending that only “testers” use this solution. Currently, a more stable, albeit tethered jailbreak solution is available in the form of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 0.9.7RC8. However, as this is a “tethered” solution, jailbroken iDevice owners will have to boot their iPhone via Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 whenever it powers down, in order to maintain jailbreak app functionality.

The great thing about the newer versions of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 is that they support the iPhone 4 and iPad. Previously, an untethered solution was only available for “legacy” devices such as the iPhone 3G.Even thou gh this most recent version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5 (untethered) is recommended only for “testers,” it does point toward an upcoming final version of the jailbreak tool. For now, I’m staying away from the untethered version of Unlock/Untethered Jailbreak iPhone 4 iOS 5. Instead, the tethered solution works very well – it only gets mildly annoying if your iPhone runs out of power.
