WWDC: iPhone 5 June release date likely despite 2011 iPhone 4S failure
February 7, 2012 by Bill Palmer
by Bill Palmer
“Given the extreme let-down and rumor-mill that was provided false on October 4th, how can you be so certain that this summer will be the release time of the iPhone 5 at the WWDC?” One skeptical Beatweek reader poses the question amid our prediction (and that of others) that the iPhone 5 will see its release date as soon as this summer. And it’s a fair question: Apple whiffed mightily on the iPhone 5 in 2011, first by letting the traditional twelve iPhone upgrade window come and go in the summer by not making a move, and then by only managing to come up with an iPhone 4S in the fall. Why should Apple now be trusted to deliver the iPhone 5 in a timely fashion in 2012? The answer, as it turns out, is a rather simple one…
When Apple failed to launch the iPhone 5 last fall, it didn’t go back to square one. Although it now must leave the iPhone 4S in the spotlight for a certain amount of time in order to save face and keep from giving its early-adopter users whiplash, the fact is that the iPhone 5 was almost ready to go last fall – and that was several months ago. It wouldn’t be shocking if the iPhone 5 is ready to ship right now, but Apple can’t get away with launching it a mere four months after the 4S. Moreover, the company must gear up to launch the new iPad first, which is expected to happen in March. The fact that the iPhone 4S is setting sales records and stealing significant marketshare from competitors means that Apple isn’t under extreme pressure to get the iPhone 5 out the door. But there’s no reason to believe it’ll sit on the iPhone 5 all the way until the fall, with the exception of one thing which could throw a monkey wrench in the works…
Best as anyone can piece it together, iOS 5 was intended to be the operating system for the iPhone 5. When it became clear that the iPhone 5 wasn’t happening, Apple apparently took whatever iPhone 5 features it could (A5 processor, improved camera mechanism) and stuffed inside the iPhone 4 body shell in order to create the iPhone 4S. That left iOS 5 as the new operating system for the iPhone 4S by default. When Apple launches the iPhone 5 this year, it’s not clear whether the company will attempt to include a fully revamped iOS 6 with it or whether it’ll instead go with an intermediary iOS 5.5 to accommodate the new hardware without completely rewriting the book. Apple’s decision in this department will dictate how much lead time it needs ahead of the iPhone 5 launch, as third party app developers must be involved in beta-testing any new operating system in advance of its release. If Apple goes the quick route on the iOS side, there’s no reason it can’t launch the iPhone 5 as soon as it wants. Expect Apple to use its June WWDC conference as a natural launching pad for the iPhone 5, thereby getting the iPhone back on track as a traditionally summer-released product and capitalizing on the marketshare gains made by the iPhone 4S before it loses momentum. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

Sprint Reports Strong iPhone Sales in Q4 2011
Sprint‘s Q4 2011 earnings report is out, and the results aren’t stellar, but strong iPhone sales are among the highlights.
The company reported a $1.3 billion net loss on a $8.72 billion revenue, with much of the losses attributed to iPhone subsidizing costs.
Sprint said its iPhone sales in the quarter were 1.8 million, 40% of which were to new customers. However, one has to keep in mind that if Sprint sold more iPhones, its loss would be even bigger.
Overall, Sprint now has 55 million net subscribers — 1.6 million more than in Q3 2011; 33 million of those subscribers are post-paid, 14.8 million are pre-paid and 7.2 million wholesale and affiliate subscribers.
“During the past year, Sprint added more than 5 million net new customers and grew wireless service revenue by more than 5%, including 17% for the Sprint platform. This momentum gives us confidence as we execute our Network Vision upgrade and 4G LTE roll-out,” said Sprint CEO Dan Hesse in a statement.
Sprint’s competitors recently reported similarly positive results when it comes to iPhone activations. ATT said it activated 7.6 million iPhones last quarter, and Verizon activated 4.2 million iPhones during the same period.

[Poll] Are the iPad 3 Rumors Underwhelming?
While connected devices and their apps are rapidly gaining popularity, they don’t fully enable the mobile, multimedia and social lifestyle that people want. Instead of today’s fractured and frustrating experience, people need intuitive, personalized and integrated apps and services for their netbooks, e-books, tablets and other connected devices. Service providers can capitalize on their high-value network capabilities to become expe- rience providers, using intuitive apps and services to enable the lifestyle people want and to bridge the gaps in today’s connected device experience. With this approach and the right partner, they will be well positioned to capture the connected device opportunity and increase revenue.

iPad 3, iTV and iPhone 5 could bring Apple stock to a price of $665
Canacorrd Genuity analyst Michael Walkley expects Apple to gain more market share in the first quarter of this year, all thanks to the high demand for iPhones. “Our monthly channel checks indicated very strong sales trends for the iPhone 4S at all three U.S. carriers and overall strong iPhone sales in international markets,” he says in a note, as cited by cnbc.com. “We are increasing our March quarter iPhone estimates from 30.1 million to 32.6 million units.” Walkley believes that the demand for the iPhone5, iTV and iPad3 should drive the stock to $665. Regarding the release date of the iPhone 5, the analyst explains that competitors are planning launches so that they avoid competition. “They’re delaying launches on the belief that the iPhone comes out in summer 2012,” he says. The analyst also predicts that the iPad3 will premiere in the first week of March. “There’s a major trade show in Barcelona at the end of Feb,” he explained. A lot of Apple competitors will announce rival products and we think Apple will want to steal thunder back for the iPad 3. So my firm thinks it comes during the first week in March.” As for the iTV, Walkley estimates that the device, which is rumored to integrate Siri, besides other Apple gadgets, will bring a significant growth to the company. “With all the growth and momentum and all the market share they can win, we think shares remain undervalued. Apple is our top pick,” he says.

Patent Reveals 3D Eye-Tracking in Future Apple iPhone 5?

What if you could look at a 3D object on your iPhone and when you moved your head or shifted your eyes, the display would respond accordingly to give you what would be the real world perspective change? Apparently, that could very well be the kind of technology we’ll be finding in the iPhone 5.
There was a patent application submitted by Apple that seems to approach that kind of functionality. It talks about a user interface that utilizes 3D eye-tracking. If we take the example of a first person shooter game, you could simply look toward the right side of the screen for your character to turn and look toward the right side of the environment. The same kind of idea could be extended to photography and videography too.
The technology would involve a front-facing camera, of course, but it’d also take advantage of data coming in from the accelerometer and compass to alter the perspective of the three-dimensional visuals being depicted on the device display. The patent seems to lend itself to portable iOS devices, but it also leaves the door open for 3D eye-tracking in an iMac or MacBook. After all, Microsoft is doing the Kinect for PCs too.
To be fair, the original filing for this patent was way back in Q3 2010 and we haven’t seen Apple do anything with it since then. If that’s the case, they may have already abandoned the project… or it could be coming to the iPhone 5, iPhone 6, or some other device in the future. As always, time will tell.

Apple iPhone 5 – latest rumour round-up
The Apple rumour mill never sleeps, but it
has recently be more concerned Apple’s next tablet offering – the iPad 3.
But with all the hearsay and
rumour-spreading about the iPad 3, we’ve been neglecting another of Apple’s big
products this year – the iPhone 5.
OK, so Apple’s next smartphone offering isn’t
due out for a quite a while still. But that has never stopped us speculating before.
It’s fair to say that, despite initial
disappointment, the iPhone 4S is a pretty awesome smartphone. And the sales
reflect this – sales in the fourth quarter of 2011 put Apple firmly at the top of
the pile, helped in no small part by the 4S.
So even though it looks like Apple will
milk the 4S for all its worth, we thought we’d catch up with the iPhone 5
rumour mill to see what we’ve missed while we’ve been obsessing over the iPad
3. So what are the latest iPhone 5 rumours?
Apple iPhone 5 unveiling
Mobile World Congress is in a couple of
weeks’ time, but we’d be foolish to even dream of an iPhone 5 showing there.
A far more likely scenario is at the Apple
Worldwide Developers Conference in June. That’s according to Taiwanese website
Digitimes, anyway. But the hype around the iPhone 5 will be so high, that we
may see it given its own event after WWDC.
Apple iPhone 5 release date
If we see an unveiling in June, or soon
after, then we could be seeing a release date of around autumn. This wouldn’t
be surprising, as Apple will want to give the iPhone 4S as much time in the limelight
as possible.
Apple iPhone 5 to be waterproof?
Apple’s devices aren’t famous for their
durability, with some users having to shell out for a new one after one accidental
drop on the ground.
But they could be about to get that little bit
more life-friendly. According to reports, the iPhone 5 could feature a something
called Liquipel – a technology that will give the device a special
nano-coating, making it waterproof.
