What iPhone 5 May Look Like (Missing Lines In Steve Jobs Bio Found)

With the New iPad 3 out of the bag, the Apple rumor mill is now looking towards the iPhone 5 and its impending release sometime in 2012.

At this point, nothing is known about the iPhone 5 and if anything is even close to concrete, it would be that the iPhone 5 will be LTE capable. Now, the best-selling Steve Jobs biography may in fact reveal more details about the iPhone 5 that were once thought lost.

According to Paulo Santos of SeekingAlpha, the international versions of the Steve Jobs biography contained an extra paragraph which were left out of the US edition. Santos translated that paragraph from Portuguese which spoke of product testing by none other than Apple’s Sir Jonathan Ive:

“Weeks became friends with Jony Ive, who sometimes came to visit him at his lake house north of New York. “I can show Jony some similar glass samples, and he can tell them apart just by touching them,” said Weeks. “Only my head of research can do the same. And when you show something to Steve, he either likes it – or doesn’t like it – instantly. But Jony, he plays with it, examines it, studies the tinniest detail and capabilities.” In 2010, Ive took his most senior managers to a Corning factory, to make glass together with the specialist glass makers there. The company that year was working on a tremendously stronger glass, codenamed “Godzilla Glass,” and it hoped someday to be able to make glass and ceramic tough enough to be used for an iPhone that would not need to have a metal rim. “Jobs and Apple made us better,” Weeks said. “Each of us are fanatical about the products we make.”

Now the interesting part from this excerpt would be the talk of an all-glass iPhone which wouldn’t require that problematic metal rim found to have caused signal reception issues. Of course, if Apple were to eliminate the metal rim from the iPhone 5, the edges would have to be rounded so as to not become dangerous.

Whether the Godzilla Glass helped Apple accomplish this is unclear but if it did, then we may be seeing an all-glass iPhone 5 later this year.

Rumor: 7-inch iPad to feature slim bezel display

DigiTimes is still in the 7-inch
iPad reporting business, today citing sources in the upstream supply chain. The rumored device is seen as a Kindle Fire competitor.

First of all, let’s clear the air about Apple’s iPad and the Kindle Fire. Apple couldn’t care less about the Kindle Fire. There is not a single device in the
tablet market that requires Apple to create a “competitor” product.

In fact, one could argue that there is not a single device in the smartphone market that Apple is worried about either. The new iPad has reportedly sold out of preorder units, and the
iPhone 4S drove Apple to its biggest quarter (and one of the best by any company) ever.

So, to suggest that the Kindle Fire is a catalyst for Apple to develop a new product is a little insulting to Apple. That being said, the rumors exist. The latest, from (who else) DigiTimes, suggests this Kindle Fire competitor from Apple will feature a 7.85-inch screen with a slimmer bezel to help maximize display area.

The report then goes on to say that the 7-inch iPad may not feature the Retina Display currently found on the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and the new iPad, but the device would target the lower end of the tablet market, adding a price point likely in the $249-$299 range.

I cannot stress enough how much I disagree that Apple would release an iPad with these specs. While a 7-inch iPad may very likely be in the mix down the road, there is no way Apple would release an inferior product simply to compete for market share in the low end of the tablet market. As it stands, Apple is mopping up in profit share at the high end, a much more valuable metric to consider.

If you are waiting for a smaller, cheaper iPad, your wait will likely be a long one. With the iPad 2 now available new from Apple for just $399, I wouldn’t expect Apple to compete with itself anytime soon by adding a low-cost, 7-inch iPad. Cupertino-based company Apple was able to grab the headlines last week with its new iPad, refurbished Apple TV, and iOS 5.1 update. Now, the people are eyeing the release of their mobile phone iteration –– the iPhone 5.

To 4G or Not to 4G

Even before Apple announced its new iPad, many speculated that the tablet will feature a 4G LTE connectivity. Upon the company’s confirmation that the feature will be present on the device, multiple unnamed sources stated the upcoming iPhone model will also feature the same technology.

As reported by DigiTimes last Monday, sources from Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturers claimed that iPhone 5 will “very likely” have an embedded 4G LTE radio. The report also mentioned that the much-awaited handset will hit the stores in the second half of this year.

If the DigiTimes report will turn out to be true, then it’s expected that smartphone manufacturers will definitely equip their devices with a 4G LTE technology. In turn, this will boost the sales of LTE-enabled devices worldwide this year.

What to Expect in iPhone 5

The World Wide Web carries a lot of rumors about iPhone 5’s possible features. Whether people should take this information as a grain of salt, there’s no denying that Apple’s new handset will have a significant edge over its competitors.

• Retina Display: The new iPad’s Retina Display boasts 2048 x 1536 resolution, and it’s expected that the iPhone 5 will carry a 3.7 – 4 inch Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge screen. There were also reports that the device will have a 1280 x 720 HD display with 367ppi pixel density.
• Processor: The new iPad is powered by an A5X dual core CPU and quad core GPU. Thus, people can assume that the next iPhone will have a 1.2 to 1.5 GHz processor and at least 1GB of RAM.
• Camera: Considering that Android smartphones are coming out with an 8 megapixel camera, Apple’s iPhone 5 is expected to feature something similar or higher. There are also rumors that the upcoming handset will boast a 3D camera.
• Near Field Communication Technology: Previously, New York Times reported that iPhone 4S will feature NFC technology. But since it didn’t happen, the technology could be well on iPhone 5’s cards.
• Battery Life: It’s deemed that Apple will release the new iPhone with an improved battery life, so people will expect that iPhone 5’s power will allow up to 8 hours of talk time on 3G and 14 hours on 2G.

Whether all or just parts of the rumored features for iPhone 5 will happen remains to be seen. As of the moment, people can only wait until later this year for Apple’s announcement.

5 Revelations for Designers From Apple’s Jonathan Ive

Jonathan Ive is not only Apple’s most senior designer, he’s held the title for 15 years. He’s the man behind the look of a lot of the company’s most iconic — and successful — gizmos, and has worked on the likes of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, as well as the iMac and Air.

Steve Jobs even referred to the 45-year-old designer as his “spiritual partner” at Apple in his biography by Walter Isaacson, and Ive’s native Britain bestowed knighthood upon him. Read: he’s probably got a few lessons to share.

Ive recently spoke to the U.K.’s Evening Standard. The questions were simple and the tone casual, but there are some real gems in there for someone with a mind for design, or anyone who thinks about the work that goes into crafting technology besides.

1. Don’t Think Different, Think Simple

Apparently Apple has slyly led the world astray with the company’s famous “Think Different” ads. That’s not what it’s about in the least, according to Ive, who said that “most of our competitors are interesting in doing something different, or want to appear new — I think those are completely the wrong goals.” Click here for the appropriate sound of a record scratching.

So, what is it all about? “A product has to be genuinely better. This requires real discipline, and that’s what drives us — a sincere, genuine appetite to do something that is better,” Ive said. Later in the interview he really drove it home: “Our goal is simple objects, objects that you can’t imagine any other way. Simplicity is not the absence of clutter. Get it right, and you become closer and more focused on the object.”

Consider the iPod Shuffle: it doesn’t even have a screen, and all it is (in its fourth generation, anyway) is a flash drive with a click wheel attached. An MP3 player doesn’t get much functionally simpler than that.

2. Always Ask Questions

We all hear it growing up. There’s no such thing as a dumb question. Ive takes it a step further, in fact, saying that you should be asking questions while being “interested in being wrong.” That’s because, if you are truly innovating (not just creating something different, mind you), you’re working on a problem for which there is no solution yet.

How, then, do you solve the previously unsolved?

A “wonderful fascination with the what if questions” and “absolute focus and a keen insight” all help, but what it really boils down to, according to the interview with Ive, is this:

“What is more difficult is when you are intrigued by an opportunity. That, I think, really exercises the skills of a designer. It’s not a problem you’re aware of, nobody has articulated a need. But you start asking questions, what if we do this, combine it with that, would that be useful? This creates opportunities that could replace entire categories of device, rather than tactically responding to an individual problem. That’s the real challenge, and that’s what is exciting.”

3. There Is No “I” In Team, Not Even An iTeam

One thing Ive is clear to emphasize is that the design work at Apple is not just Ive: “The way we work at Apple is that the complexity of these products really makes it critical to work collaboratively, with different areas of expertise… We’re located together, we share the same goal, have exactly the same preoccupation with making great products.”

The design teams at Apple, according to Ive, are small and diverse, which means the way a product looks and operates comes together organically. “I work with silicon designers, electronic and mechanical engineers,” Ive said, “and I think you would struggle to determine who does what when we get together.”

So, a designer isn’t an island scribbling designs down onto a pad that an engineer then has to try and realize as a product. This marriage of designers to engineers and more is probably why we have the likes of the click wheel and MagSafe charger. It’s a hollistic approach, and one that offers “collective confidence when you are facing a seemingly insurmountable challenge,” according to Ive.

That said, the designer still has clear responsibilities, as you’ll see next.

4. Trust Your Instincts (Or: Know Who Not To Listen To)

As you might expect from a high profile designer such as Ive, who is responsible for a wealth of definitive products, he’s got quite a bit of trust in his own instincts. This is more a guiding design doctrine, however, and less ego: “It’s unfair to ask people who don’t have a sense of the opportunities of tomorrow from the context of today to design.”

In other words, if you asked a bunch of people in a room back in 2007, people used to using dial-pad feature phones, if they wanted to have to tap their phone screen to do everything, or press a big glass screen against their face while making a call, the room may have generated a lot of negative interest. If you handed those people fully realized iPhones, instead… Well, let’s just say that turned out pretty well for Apple, didn’t it?

“We don’t do focus groups,” Ive said, adding, “that is the job of the designer.”

5. It Never Really Gets Easier

Apple has had a pretty amazing run these last five years, which is when the first generation iPhone launched in June of 2007. Since then, the company has knocked it out of the park with new iPods and iPads — which, along with the iPhone, make up 76% percent of Apple’s overall revenue right now, according to Apple CEO Tim Cook. With one victory after the next, one would imagine that Ive and other design teams at Apple are rolling in a well-worn groove.

Not so, according to Ive: “For as long as we’ve been doing this, I am still surprised how difficult it is to do this, but you know exactly when you’re there — it can be the smallest shift, and suddenly transforms the object, without any contrivance.”

Ive’s team and design methodology allow him to keep cranking out hits. It’s also why, I imagine, the iPhone 4S didn’t depart too much from the iPhone 4, or the new iPad didn’t look too radically different from the iPad 2. Because it’s not about being different. It’s about boiling down an object until “you forget you are using an iPad,” according to Ive.

iPhone 5 Coming With 4G LTE: Report

Apple’s next iPhone will support 4G Long-Term
Evolution (LTE) connectivity, according to a new report by DigiTimes.

“A new version of iPhone to be launched
in the second half of 2012 is very likely to support LTE as well,” suggested
the publication’s March 12 article, which cited unnamed “smartphone makers”
based in Taiwan.

While the DigiTimes track record is
sometimes spotty when it comes to Apple rumors, the appearance of 4G LTE on the
latest iPad is nonetheless a strong indicator that the next iPhone will follow
suit.

During the New York City unveiling of
the iPhone 4 on Verizon in January 2011, then-Apple
COO and current CEO Tim Cook suggested that adapting the device to LTE would
have resulted in “compromises” that Apple refused to make. In the year-plus
since that event, Apple’s engineers have presumably wrestled with the best way
to install a 4G LTE antenna in a small form factor without compromising its
design or performance.

Although the next iPhone’s release is
almost certainly many months away, rumors about the device’s possible features
have been drifting around the blogosphere since late last year. In January,
Apple-centric blog 9to5Mac reported that the “iPhone 5” will feature
a bigger screen and a redesigned casing. That report cited a “reliable source
at Foxconn in China,” referring to the factory where iPhones are made.

Over the summer of 2011, analysts and
pundits seemed certain the company would release an iPhone 5 with a radically
altered design and powerful new hardware. In October, however, Apple executives
unveiled the iPhone 4S, whose exterior seemed virtually identical to the iPhone
4. Despite that similarity, a collection of new features—including Siri, a
voice-activated “digital personal assistant”—quickly helped the new smartphone
become a bestseller.

For its fiscal first quarter ended Dec.
31, Apple reported sales of some 27.04 million iPhones. During the Jan. 24
earnings call, Cook attributed the iPhone’s robust sales numbers to a
combination of what he called “breathtaking customer reception” as well as
pent-up demand from a particularly long gap between new iPhone releases.  

In order to sustain that sort of sales
run, inevitably Apple will need to release a next-generation iPhone capable of
matching or surpassing rival devices running Google Android and Windows Phone.
That could very well mean the next iPhone comes with 4G LTE support.
