Sprint iPhone 5 Has Advantage Over Verizon & AT&T Even Without LTE

Sprint has come under a lot of fire lately after details of its huge commitment with Apple to buy iPhones in massive quantities over the next few years, came to light.

Sprint iPhone 5 may be behind in LTE race but still has its strong points

The issue was amplified when it was practically ‘confirmed’ that the iPhone 5 would be LTE capable given that the New iPad 3 featured it. With Sprint’s LTE network still in its infancy (the first Sprint LTE smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, is yet to even release), Sprint would have the shortest straw as it was the last to LTE after Verizon and ATT.

There is of course one thing to consider with all this happening, the iPhone 5 may in fact not launch this summer at WWDC 2012. Given the late release of the iPhone 4S back in October, we could see the iPhone 5 also follow the fall schedule.

This could give Sprint extra time to get its LTE network up to par if rumors of a summer launch for LTE devices hold true. Furthermore, with Sprint being the only one offering unlimited data plans at this time, it may still have a shot against the ATT and Verizon iPhone 5 even if its LTE network isn’t as wide in the fall.

Is LTE a priority for you when it comes to the iPhone 5? Or are you more interested in an unlimited 3G data plan given the recent reports that users on LTE data plans find themselves hitting their data caps way too quickly to enjoy it.

iPhone 5 Rumors: Foxconn Mass Hiring to Expedite iPhone 5 Production for June …

iphone 5, iphone 5 release date, iphone 5 rumors, iphone 5 features, iphone 5 specs, iphone 5 launchDubbed as iPhone 5, Apple’s next flagship smartphone is one of the most talked about topics online. According to recent rumors an expected fall release date may have been moved to as early as June for the iPhone 5.

Rumors of the iPhone 5 early debut sparked from reports coming from China saying that Foxconn, Apple’s top manufacturing partner, is hiring 20, 000 workers for its Taiyuan City manufacturing plant which is targeted to assemble the next generation iPhone. Foxconn factories likewise assembled the iPhone 4S and they have already reportedly received the order for the next Apple smartphone.

The Northern China Foxconn plant is rumored to produce more than 80% of the iPhone 5 units set to be released this year. The sprint hiring of that many workers can be interpreted as a means of expediting the assembly of the new iPhone handsets.

The addition of these workers can mean millions of smartphone units produced in one or two months’ time. If the rumors are correct and the iPhone 5 is released earlier than expected, this presents a shorter life cycle for its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.

The next generation iPhone is rumored to showcase Apple’s trend-setting mark in the smart device industry. While its next flagship handset will still come in the usual 16/32/64 GB storage options it will be power packed with a quad-core A6 processor and an 8-megapixel camera, assembled with Corning Glass 2 and ultrasonic bonding for rigidity.

The iPhone 5 will utilize NFC technology and similar to the recently launched iPad 3, it will be equipped with the 4G LTE connectivity option.

What the New iPhone (5) will look like

The Apple iPhone 5 continues to dominate tech headlines despite the fact that many other impressive smartphones will be released before it. We’ve told of rumored specs, features and much more about the new iPhone (5) but one thing we haven’t concentrated on much yet is what the device will look like.

Although we’ve heard all sorts of speculation as to what the iPhone 5 design may be like, nothing has been consistent and so far most of us have no idea about its cosmetic appearance. Different factors such as an all-glass design, teardrop shaped form factor, larger phone and much more have been discussed but the one thing we’re pretty sure of is that it will look different to the iPhone 4S. When the iPhone 4S came to fruition looking exactly the same as the iPhone 4 many thought it would dent sales. The iPhone 4S has still seen phenomenal sales though so that didn’t happen but we don’t think Apple will risk the same design yet again.

So let’s take a look at some stunning images of the iPhone 5 to make you drool. Unfortunately you may be disappointed as these are the latest concept designs and although we reckon many would like this to be Apple’s actual iPhone 5 design, Apple is (as usual) keeping that a closely guarded secret, for now at least. These images though are inspiring stuff and were brought to our attention by Concept Phones, sourced from ADR Studio.

Their vision of the iPhone for 2012 is a SIM-free device and the concept supports 4G LTE connectivity without the need for a SIM card. A new audio section and panel speakers are also incorporated and the controls are at the top and the edge. This mock-up has an aluminum unibody and even has three different screen strips, one showing notifications, the bottom one for apps and multitasking and the center serving as a desktop area. A motion sensor activates the Home button and an LED-powered edge could display who’s calling or the battery life of the iPhone 5 in a choice of different colors.

The display looks to be around 4.6-inches, as has recently been speculated for the real iPhone 5, although we feel it’s not likely to be quite as big as that, and the device is slimmer than slim. The images we’re showing here are from ADR Studios (link above) with wallpapers by Alessandra Cammarano and it’s also imagined that this concept iPhone 5 is running iOS 6 and features an 8, 10 or even 12-megapixel camera. We think many readers will agree that this iPhone depiction is absolutely beautiful. It’s sexy, sleek and sophisticated and we want one! Unfortunately that won’t happen but for now drink in these images and enjoy! We’d like to know what you think of the look of this new iPhone and would you like Apple to replicate it for the genuine iPhone 5? What are your favorite parts of this design?

iPhone 5 May Come With Nano-Sim Technology

    nano sim

iPhone 5 is going to be Apple Inc.’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) next big thing and the company is working hard to keep their secrets within four walls. According to some sources, Apple’s ready for bringing yet another breakthrough in smart phone industry by creating a nano-SIM for their next 6th generation iPhone. This new nano-SIM would be smaller than the micro SIM. The company thinks that this way, they’ll be getting an edge over their competition, most likely Samsung, Nokia and Blackberry.

The recent models – iPad 2 and iPhone 4S already features the micro-SIM, but the company wants to make the SIM card smaller than the already small-sized micro-SIM. The new nano-SIM will be about one third smaller than the micro-SIM. This would give Apple more space to add other features to the phone. With nano-SIM, Apple can develop smaller and slimmer devices giving more room for other components.

Other competitors like Nokia, Motorola and RIM’s Blackberry are also rumored to be shrinking the micro-SIM further. These micro-SIM are standard in Nokia’s newly launced Lumia phones also.

However reports say that Apple has used dubious persuasion methods in convincing European operators to approve their proposal. For now, we’ll wait and watch the show if this new nano-SIM really makes the new iPhone 5 slimmer and smaller.

On a related note, to make this nano-SIM an industry standard, Apple is ready to offer royaly-free licensing to its rival mobile device makers. This move could in turn make the technology available to other device makers and they can also benefit from the nano-SIM technology.

But Nokia has also argued that its backing a superior nano-SIM that doesn’t require a tray or carrier. This new design by Nokia also meets (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) ETSI’s “pre-agreed requirements”. The ETSI is meeting at the end of this week to agree a new design.

Earlier, rival companies like Nokia, RIM and Motorola have raised their concerns opposing standardization of nano-SIM. They fear that Apple could claim ownership of the patents behind the format, and they’ll have to start paying royalties for using the technology.

iPhone 5 rumors will be a snoozefest this year

Why, you ask? Because we’ve already gone through this last year. In the run-up to the iPhone 4S’ release, there were multiple reports from trusted sites about a new iPhone with a slimmer design and a larger screen. We saw legitimate-looking iPhone 5 cases, and some fans even created a semi-realistic iPhone 5 mockup. And thanks to the new iPad, we can predict some of the features  — in particular, LTE 4G –  that the new iPhone will sport.

Aside from revealing a new naming scheme (and after the new iPad, we’re sort of expecting that as well), there seems to be little room left for iPhone 5 rumors to truly surprise us.

Take the latest rumor from iMore, for example. The site reports that the iPhone 5 will have a mini-dock connector that’ll allow more room for internal components  (it already reported this back in February), LTE 4G (no surprise here), and a release in October (again, what pretty much everyone is expecting). iMore’s big revealation: the iPhone 5 may have a screen that’s the same 3.5-inch size as its predecessors (I’m hoping this one isn’t true), but iMore also notes that the decision hasn’t been finalized yet.

Earlier last week, we saw a far sketchier rumor from Reuters (via a South Korean newspaper) that claimed the next iPhone would sport a 4.6-inch screen and be released in the second quarter (get real folks). While an extremely large iPhone screen seems interesting, everything else about that report rang false.

Those iPhone 5 rumors from last year didn’t just come out of thin air — they were likely just a year too early. Based on the past rumors, we expect a new iPhone with a radical redesign, a slightly larger screen, LTE (for sure), and a faster processor than the new iPad’s A5X (hopefully quad-core).

Like any iPhone owner, I’m excited to see what Apple comes up with next — but I’m far less amped for several months of rehashed rumors.

New iPhone 5 Review of News

    <!– 1332633600

That last iPhone announcement was not a radical change from previous models now iPhone fans are wondering, “What will next iPhone be like? When will it be released.

Many believe that the next iPhone that could be called iPhone 5 will have 4G LTE access because Verizon stated that all new smartphones will have 4G LTE access.

Since the new iPad has faster processor, the next iPhone is expected to have a quad-core process with an Apple A6 chipset.  Needed for the increased power and LTE access will be a bigger and better performing battery.

Names the conjecturatti have suggested could be just new “iPhone.”  The biggest rumors are that after  many models with a 3.5″ touchscreen that the new iPhone will have a bigger touchscreen with some reporting  4-4.6″. Other reports suggest that it will be thinner too.  There are also reports that there will be a 3.5″ model along with a larger screened new iPhone model.

The release date is not clear, yet.  The first iPhone was released in June, while last year’s iPhone release was pushed to the fall.  We can be safe to say sometime this year. Foxconn is reportedly hiring an additional 20,000 workers to piece together the next-generation iOS smartphone. It can be several months before the new iPhone arrive in the United States.

The latest rumor is that the iPhone 5 will  have new mini dock to make more internal room for components.  It could also have 64GB of storage too.

Whenever and whatever is released by Apple with the name iPhone someone on it, we can be sure that like every other Apple product it will be popular and there will be little if any discounts for it.

Citigroup analysts who met with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer reported that Apple did not feel the need to make cheaper phones.

    2012 Superphones: Galaxy S3, Blade, iPhone 5, One X…

As we approach the second quarter of 2012, more next-generation smartphones are being leaked and with it, making phone buyers think twice about settling on last year’s flagship models.

In 2011, the Samsung Galaxy S2, iPhone 4S, HTC Sensation and Motorola DROID RAZR ruled the nest. Now in 2012, their successors are already starting to line up. Here are 4 upcoming smartphones to look out for in 2012.

Upcoming smartphones (2012): Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Blade, iPhone 5, HTC One X

Starting off with the grandaddy of the Android smartphone world, the Samsung Galaxy S3, this is arguably the most hyped about Android phone of 2012. Speculations suggest a quad-core Exynos chip, 12-megapixel rear camera, 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, whopping 2GB RAM, LTE, NFC and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a new version of TouchWiz.

Its biggest rival will have to be the iPhone 5 which if speculations serve true, will share many of the same upgrades found in the Galaxy S3. This includes a 12-megapixel shooter, A6 quad-core processor, LTE, NFC, larger display and more RAM.

Next we have the HTC One X, the only ‘superphone’ on this list with confirmed specs: 4.7-inch Super LCD HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 2, 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 chip, 1GB RAM and an 8-megapixel shooter with f2.0 aperture.

Rounding it off is the Motorola Blade a.k.a DROID Fighter which is identical to the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX but includes a larger 4.6-inch HD Display, a rear camera in the range of 8 to 13-megapixels, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on-screen buttons.

All 4 smartphones are not expected to arrive in the US anytime before the summer, with the HTC One X expected to be first to shelves.

iPhone 5 Features Nano Sim Technology?

    Smaller and smarter

The rumour mill that started to spin frantically around the upcoming sixth generation iPhone threw in our direction a fresh new piece of information: Apple could be integrating within the iPhone 5 the first nano-SIM.

According to some reports, Apple teams are working to push the nano-SIM technology as a new standard of the industry.

Reportedly, Apple is planning to make the micro SIM card featured in the latest iPhone and iPad even smaller.

The nano-SIM card will allow Apple to develop smaller, slimmer devices and will give it more room for other vital components.

A nano-SIM, which is expected to be about a third smaller than the actual micro SIM, would require a special drawer to hold and protect the card.

As the cutthroat smartphone market is moving at fast speeds within the innovation field, other competitors like Nokia, Motorola and Research In Motion are also looking to develop smaller SIM cards as well as push the standards.

However, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer expressed its discontent for Apple’s plans pointing out that Apple used dubious persuasion methods to get European carriers to agree to the new technology.

Can Nokia Beat The iPhone And iPad? (Don’t Laugh, It’s Trying)

Nokia has big plans to come back from the brink.

Chances are if you were speaking on a mobile phone in most countries around the world (except the U.S.) six or seven years ago, you were clasping in your hand a little multi-colored, keypad-bedecked bundle of plastic and electronics made by Nokia. Your idle minutes were spent playing Snake on its gray display. But nowadays you’re much more likely to be gabbing–and surfing the web, updating Twitter, or playing a sophisticated game–on a touchscreen smartphone built by a handful of other makers.

Nokia, you see, is perhaps the one company that’s been dealt the biggest slap across the face by Apple’s disruptive iPhone. It was slow to embrace touchscreen tech, slow to let go of its antiquated user interface, reluctant to innovate its smartphone lineup–and subsequently had to shelve its long-held business model, and embrace Microsoft’s clever smartphone OS.

It’s planning a comeback. A big one. But success is far from assured.

    The iPhone Killer

Nokia’s chief of design recently remarked that his company was busy planning a future phone UI that would be so revolutionary it would surpass the current smartphone tech by miles. Marko Ahtisaari concentrated his disdain on the user experience on current Android and, curiously because it’s a Nokia staple, Symbian. According to Ahtisaari, the current smartphone UI is a dead thing, a toy, a “dollshouse” in fact, where users can merely adjust the “furniture” of the UI.

As for the iPhone, Ahtisaari extended the metaphor by saying “the road from the kitchen to the dining room is always through the front door,” and slammed the iPhone as being “poorly designed” and overly complex. Ahtisaari is criticizing the iPhone’s simlpicity and its homescreen-centric UI, and in a way he’s right–Apple hasn’t tweaked the overall way iOS works in years. But it’s these simple features which hundreds of millions of buyers seem to like, when they arrived they were far beyond anything Nokia was capable of offering, and Ahtisaari is conveniently overlooking some of the advances Apple introduced in iOS which lets you quickly switch between apps without going to the homepage.

Ahtisaari is more behind the dynamic “live” feel of Windows Phone, he says, which is a more natural way for a user to interact with their phone. Arguably he has a point here too, because you can get meaningful data about a slew of apps from a quick glance at a Windows Phone versus alternatives from Apple or Google. But Microsoft’s Metro UI is still a limited system–you can’t bend it to your design whim as a handset vendor, and the look and feel is defined by Microsoft (a firm not famous for moving swiftly through evolutionary steps).

Hence Ahtisaari’s long-pursued work to develop something better still. Something that users won’t even have to bend down to their phones to interact with, or even to touch them.

Which of course has us speculating: Is Ahtisaari talking about the kind of dynamic device UI that Microsoft itself has championed in several “visions of the future”-style efforts, like the video below? It’s possible. Or is he talking about a radical new interface that’ll rest on voice control, or perhaps incorporate a head-up display–and won’t run software from MS but from Nokia itself? Microsoft is certainly looking at this sort of future, as are Google and even Apple.

It’s fascinating to see the head of design at Nokia wriggle against the user experience imposed on his customers’ phones via Microsoft and suggest that perhaps there’s a better way coming soon. One very appealing hint at the sort of thing that’s possible comes via this leak of conceptual UIs coming from a Nokia designer, who has now departed Nokia–perhaps sadly:

If Nokia did pursue something radical like this, of course, it really better had arrive soon–like in 2013. That’s because Apple is carefully iterating iOS all the time, and may even be doing so more swiflty in the post-Steve Jobs era. It’s totally plausible that Apple will radically overhaul iOS sometime soon. Meanwhile Google is innovating Android all the time (even if adoption rates aren’t the best) and its handset partners are trying clever overlays with Samsung’s TouchWiz as a good example. If Nokia wants to beat its better-selling peers, then it better reveal its black swan fast, lest its relevance will be just too late.

    Cheap Smartphones

The other string to Nokia’s bow is cheap phones–something it’s always been good at and which, thanks to the spending habits of the developing world, has driven Nokia’s bottom line for years. Pile ‘em high and sell ‘em cheap is always a vendor option because it does work. But it won’t work forever, and the dumbphones Nokia relies on are becoming passé–even in the developing world, where moves to embrace novel tech like mobile payments can sometimes outpace countries like the U.S. Hence Nokia’s effort to appeal to nations like India with its new Asha 303 smartphone, freshly unveiled.

But the Asha has a problem. As a flyer from my local phone store shows, the Asha (at least in Portugal) is facing up to a double-threat of smartphones that are both new, cheaper, and better, and older smartphones that are now discounted–and whose tech may still surpass Asha’s. Samsung is the chief culprit, of course, with its spam-like wide range of Android Galaxy phones available at all prices, and its own-brand Bada OS phones. Nokia may be trading on its status as a household name, but our suspicion is that if it really is to take the cheap smartphone market by storm, it has to try much harder than the somewhat uninspiring 303.

    The Inevitable Tablet

Marko Ahtisaari was also in the press the other day for revealing something that’s news, but really highly expected. Nokia is hard at work on a tablet PC. So hard that Ahtisaari is spending a third of his work time on it, and we can expect this means the firm is throwing many design euros at the device in an effort to make it as appealing to behold as the N9 is, and thus make it stand out in the incredibly iPad-esque tablet market. Of course the firm will also be spending money on its technical aspects, and we could expect odd stand-out features to arrive–like Nokia’s recently flirtation with high-spec camera tech.

CEO Stephen Elop has commented on the market before, saying Nokia was paying attention and was certain the only way to make a splash was to distinguish one’s product radically from its peers–particularly the iPad–but he wouldn’t make any firm statements.

We can guess that Nokia will be among the first firms to release a Windows 8 tablet device later in the year, however. That’s because now Nokia and Microsoft are working so closely together, the Nokia tablet could represent the best synergy between hardware and software for a Windows 8 device–a strategy that’s propelled Apple to record-setting success, even while its Android competitors fragment.

Nokia stands a chance here if its device is technologically powerful, remarkably well designed and distinctive, and is priced at the right level (something it’s not quite, perhaps, managed with its Windows phones yet).

    Odd Futures

And then there’s Nokia’s RD division to remember, a body that used to eat up fantastical amounts of Nokia’s cash but didn’t let it outmaneuver the leaner-spending Apple. Ahtisaari hinted at some of this division’s work with his mention of the iPhone-killer’s radical user interface.

And we can see still more hints of it with recent patents like Nokia’s magnetic tattoos. In the minds of Nokia inventors a near-future smartphone interface will connect to a skin sensor that’s actually embedded into the user’s body–using ferromagnetic ink as a tattoo. When your phone wants to alert you, it’ll emit a signal that activates the tattoo and thus generate a tactile response in your skin.

Is your skin crawling at the idea? It’s a little odd, but only because it seems so extreme to us. But it does indicate Nokia’s not letting its future slip away from it. Innovations may yet come from Nokia’s stable to upset the world of mobile comms.

The thing is, they’d really better come soon.
