iPhone offer could be a ploy to get your personal information

SEATTLE — Many of us use text messages to communicate.

Do you ever get messages from unsolicited numbers?

Nigeala Nigrath got one she characterized as strange, and just about an hour later, her friend got the same text.

Nigeala read the text: “Apple is looking for people to test the new iPhone 5, exclamation point. But only for first 1000 users …”

When she got it, Nigeala admitted she’d like a free phone, but she was skeptical.

“It would be lovely if it were true but I have a feeling it’s too good to be true so I Googled it,” she said.

What she found was a lot of YouTube videos offering big promises.

“Everyone wants to win something, most people never have,” she said. “Who wouldn’t want to be a winner once in their lives?”

Sure she’d like to win an iPhone 5, but it doesn’t even exist right now.

Many times, people lured with the possibility of winning something get caught up in it all and unsuspectingly supply personal information.

“They’re hoping to catch you in a moment of distraction,” said Internet security expert Adam Levin. “It’s not even a question of grabbing the brass ring, people will grasp for any ring and that’s precisely the time that thieves come out of the woodwork and prey on people.”

Levin founded Identity Theft 911. He said once the bad guys get some of your personal information, they can access your credit or debit cards, open new accounts or even impersonate you and use your insurance to get medical care, sticking you with the bill.

“This is life or death,” said Levin. “This is not just dollars and cents anymore. This is serious stuff.”

If someone asked you face to face for your personal information you would not give it, so why would you trust a text message or the internet?

Levin cautions you to be careful and guard your personal information. He offers a three-pronged approach to protect your identity from thieves. He said you should minimize the information you provide, monitor all of your account and put a damage control program in place.

Apple building 5in Retina Displays for iPhone 5 – or iPad Mini?

iphone-5

Apple is building a 5in Retina Display – which could be used for the iPhone 5 or a rumoured iPad Mini. Reports from a Japanese manufacturer suggest that the 5in Retina Displays are going into production ready for a 2013 device release.

But with the rumour mill working overtime already, it’s tough to decide if this will mean a 5in iPhone 5 or a 5in iPad Mini. We’ve already heard rumours of a 4.6in iPhone 5 and a 7.1in iPad Mini, but this news makes it look like Apple is aiming more for a Galaxy Note sized phone-come-tablet – which wouldn’t be a surprise, since the Note has sold a whopping 3 million models in a month.

Whatever the screen ends up fronting, its LCD will reportedly be crammed with 1,600 x 960 pixels (800 x 480) or 1,280 x 960 pixels (640 x 480). The fact that there are two variants could point to there being a 5in iPhone 5 and a 7.1in iPad Mini on their way. All good news – apart from the wait until 2013.

iPhone 5 is around the corner: Apple’s China plant to hire 20000

If the rumourmill churning out news and views about Apple’s much-awaited ‘new iPhone’ were to be believed, putting 2 and 2 together makes 5, or rather, the iPhone 5.

The buzz surrounding Apple’s frantic scramble for a summer launch of the iPhone 5 grew louder on news that Apple’s CEO Tim Cook yesterday made his first visit to the technology giant’s iPhone production plant in China, run by Foxconn Technology Group.

Adding fuel to the proverbial fire are reports that Foxconn, which is accused of improper labour practices, has embarked upon a hiring spree and is looking to recruit up to 20,000 workers.

“According to local news report, the factory urgently needs 20,000 more workers because Foxconn has already received orders for the production of iPhone 5,” says MIC Gadget, citing reports from The China Morning News.

As per Apple’s picture handouts dated March 28, and emailed to news agency Reuters, Cook is seen smiling and meeting workers in the newly built Foxconn ZhengzhouTechnology Park in the north central province of Hebei. The facility employs 120,000 people, the handouts said.

“Foxconn will responsible for 85 per cent of the manufacture and about 57 million set have to be produce for each year. Advertisements for the recruitment will be posted across Taiyuan, and Foxconn will hold 20 recruitment sessions throughout the city. Taiyuan Foxconn will target to become the main manufacturing base for the iPhone 5,” the MIC blog, whose acronym apparently stands for Made-In-China, added.

Foxconn is the company that supplies workers and factories for the production of Apple’s devices, including the iPhones and iPads.

According to the buzz, the new iPhone will have a larger screen (4.6 inches), the all-new Retina display (which made its debut with the new iPad), as well as an upgraded 4G LTE technology although the technology is still not available in many countries around the world.

Will iPhone 5 Have iGo’s Chip?

Since the day the $IGOI power management chip was announced, I have said it was a perfect fit for $AAPL. Now we have this:

H/T Reader John for finding this

Rumor: Texas Instruments making chips for Apple’s next iPhone ahead of Sept. launch

By AppleInsider Staff

Published: 06:40 PM EST (03:40 PM PST)

A pair of unconfirmed rumors claim that Texas Instruments has started production of the power management chip for the next iPhone, and that the sixth-generation handset will allegedly debut in September.

An “inside source” claims that Texas Instruments is already producing power management chips for an as-yet-unannounced Apple handset, which the company’s management is reportedly calling the “iPhone 5,” according to a post on iPhone repair firm RepairLabs’ blog.

Texas Instruments currently supplies a number of components to Apple including the touchscreen controller in the iPhone 4S as well as power management chips and a control device found in the new iPad.

Going further, a separate Chinese source said that the “iPhone 5? will be ready for a September release. The unnamed source also claims that the handset will feature a larger display, though didn’t mention specific dimensions.

While RepairLabs does not have a proven track record of providing rumors later proven to be true, the company did post pictures of the new iPad’s back casing in February, which allegedly came from the same chinese source mentioned above, and was one of the first to investigate the third-generation tablet’s purported heat issues.

The latest rumors come on the heels of a report earlier on Wednesday, claiming that whispers from China say Apple is working on a 5-inch Retina Display device set for launch in 2013.

So, what do we know?

1- $IGOI has patented power management technology that improves battery life in mobile devices
2- They are working with $TXN to bring that chip to market
3- On the recent earnings call, they said it would be Q3 when we saw it
4- $IGOI management, normally very effusive about the chip and its possible end uses was uncharacteristically vague about it on last earnings call other than the timing of it
5- $AAPL is getting hit in countless publications on battery issues in both iPhones and iPads and has been nagged by this for a while

Now, there are several possibilities. But, it is the odd behavior of $IGOI management on the last call that has me thinking. Why so quiet? Given $AAPL ‘s reputation of requiring absolute silence from suppliers, one could think they were essentially being gagged? The timing of the chip from $IGOI and this rumor with $AAPL and $TXN have to make you stop and think also. Since the $IGOI is designed to both extend battery life and charge, one might assume $AAPL has decided to address the issue?

Of course, none of it could be true also…I have no definitive knowledge either way and am simply piecing various bits of information together…..take them for what you will

Sprint’s LTE Plans Are Coming Up Short As iPhone 5 Approaches

Image representing Sprint Nextel as depicted i...

Image via CrunchBase

With the wireless industry moving toward LTE as the two largest U.S. carriers, Verizon and ATT, roll out their nationwide LTE networks, it seems increasingly likely that the next generation iPhone will come enabled with 4G LTE support. As a precursor to that event, Apple has already released the new iPad in an LTE variant with Qualcomm’s baseband chipsets. Further, Qualcomm has also come out with 28nm Gobi chipsets that conserve on space and power, potentially removing two of the biggest obstacles that have come in the way of an earlier LTE iPhone release.

As an LTE iPhone looks increasingly imminent, the pressure on latecomer Sprint to deliver on its aggressive LTE rollout plans is growing.

See our full analysis of Sprint’s stock here

Huge bet on the line

Sprint has made a huge $15.5 billion commitment to buy iPhones from Apple over a four-year period in order to staunch the sustained postpaid subscriber losses that it has incurred since the integration of Nextel’s iDEN network. It has also tapped the debt markets twice in the last four months in order to roll over existing debt and conserve cash to pay for the expensive iPhone deal as well as upgrading its network to LTE. While Verizon and ATT have a widely deployed LTE network already, Sprint has yet to come out with its first LTE market. In order to bridge the gap, Sprint is looking to spend huge amounts on its Network Vision Plan this year.

But all that investment may amount to nothing if it fails to get its LTE network up and running in a few major markets at least by the time Apple releases the iPhone 5.

Sprint tries to downplay concerns, but we’re not satisfied

Sprint’s CFO, Joe Euteneuer, tried to alleviate these concerns saying that the deal its deal is similar to both Verizon and ATT’s, and will hence be able to offer the next iPhone irrespective of where its LTE coverage stands then. He then went on to surmise that if Apple releases the iPhone at the time as it did last year, Sprint will have had covered enough major markets by then for it to be disadvantaged at all. [1]

However, Apple has a track record of being highly unpredictable. Apple may have deviated from its usual June release date last year, but that in no way guarantees that the next iPhone will be released in October again. If Apple chooses to revert back to its earlier June release date, Sprint will be in trouble as it will have its LTE network ready in only six cities by the midyear. This of course assumes it will be able to deliver on its current plans LTE plans. If not, its situation could be even more dire.

While the risk that Sprint may not be able to offer the iPhone at all if its LTE network is not ready by the iPhone launch date is non-existent now, the fact that competing wireless carriers offering the iPhone have a much wider LTE coverage could deter subscribers from choosing Sprint if the smartphone comes with minimal upgrades other than LTE.

While that may reduce the number of new iPhone subscribers joining Sprint, we do not foresee any mass defections however as that would entail forking over huge penalty fees for breaking the two-year contract. Sprint only started offering its first iPhone late last year when the iPhone 4S was released.

iPhone 5 Release Date? Why Apple Still May Release 7.85″ iPad Mini

We previously reported rumors of a possible 7.85 inch iPad;  DigiTimes later claimed that Apple’s manufacturing partners have delivered samples of the smaller iPad to Apple. But with the success of the New iPad, is a smaller tablet still a possibility?

Appadvice outlines why releasing a smaller iPad would make sense:

Because the original iPad screen was set at a pixel resolution of 1024 x 768, it’s a good guess that the mythical iPad mini — in order to simplify and streamline third-party development as much as possible — will need to sport that same resolution (or, like the new iPad, a multiple thereof). Of course, the entire proposed point of the mini is to keep production costs low enough to hawk it for between $250 and $300, which pretty much meansno Retina display. So, 1024 x 768 will have to do.

And, boy, does it ever. If you do the math, a 7.85-inch tablet with a resolution of 1024 x 768 works out to a PPI of 163. 163!

Apple and its manufacturing partners — who’ve been making original spec iPhone and iPod touch screens for almost five years now — have all the machinery they need to make 163 PPI displays, and costs to do so are cheaper than ever.

I’m still not convinced, I get Apple could create a 7.85-inch tablet, but with no retina? It does not seem likely that Apple would be looking to release a smaller screen iPad, so close to the New iPad’s release.

Apple iPhone Deal With China Mobile Speculated

Apple (AAPL) shares hit another record high Wednesday on reports of deal-making in China to sell more iPhones. But shares later retreated and were flat in midday trading.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has been in China this week meeting with government officials and local companies.

Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes speculates that a deal with China Mobile (CHL) to carry Apple’s iPhone could be in the works.

“We wouldn’t be surprised if Cook was exploring a deal to distribute the iPhone with China Mobile, Mainland China’s largest mobile phone carrier,” Reitzes wrote in a research note Wednesday. “We believe that China Mobile could be a major driver of upside to iPhone estimates” in 2013. His estimate for worldwide iPhone sales of 189.5 million units is “feeling conservative.”

China Mobile could sell Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5 by the first half of 2013, after a fall launch in the U.S., Reitzes wrote.

Apple also appears to be readying the launch of its iPad in China, Reitzes said.

Apple shares were flat in midday trading Wednesday, near 615.70, after earlier hitting a new all-time high of 621.45.

In other news, an investment in Japan’s Sharp by Apple contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry of Taiwan is seen by some as a sign that Apple is preparing to get into the TV market, Reuters says. Hon Hai has taken around a 10% stake in Sharp, which builds LCD television displays.

But the news wasn’t all positive for Apple on Wednesday. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company agreed to offer refunds to buyers of its third-generation iPad in Australia, after the nation’s top consumer watchdog accused Apple of misleading advertising over the wireless capabilities of the product, Reuters reported.

Apple has been marketing its new iPad as a 4G product, even though it’s not compatible with current or planned 4G mobile data networks in Australia. Apple has agreed to post warnings that its new iPad “is not compatible with current Australian 4G LTE networks and WiMax networks” in Australia over the next week.
