Why is Samsung the Winner?
We do not know for sure whether Samsung is the real winner, as unlike Apple that has clearly stated its smartphone sales figures, Samsung continues to hide the exact numbers revealing only shipment numbers.
Moreover, the world’s “larger smartphone shipper” hasn’t provided any hard sales figures in a long time, so all the sales figures are mainly based on vague hints to the estimates made by analysts, which in turn are based on unclear indications from previous quarters. Therefore, as we compare Apple’s sales figures with Samsung’s shipment numbers, we end up comparing apples to oranges.
But if we really dig a little more into Apple’s loss this time, the major reason would be its sluggish and perhaps conservative attitude toward change.
While the Cupertino-based tech company refuses to incorporate larger AMOLED displays, Samsung has increased its screen size with almost all phones (Note 5.3-inches, Galaxy S3 4.8-inches presumably, much bigger than its predecessor). This visual differentiation might the edge that the Korean company has over the Cupertino one.
Apple also lags far behind Samsung when it comes to aggressive marketing of smartphones. Even in its Galaxy S3 teaser, Samsung mocks other smartphone makers calling them “sheep.” Very non-classy, but helped grab more attention from the buyers!
But let’s attribute some credit to the Korean company, which has shown some desperate attempts at improvement in the last few years.
According to Wayne Lam, senior analyst, wireless communications at IHS “With cellphones now accounting for more than 40 percent of Samsung’s overall revenue, it’s clear that the company’s continued investments in smartphone hardware and software RD are paying off.”

Forget iPhone 5: Check Out IPhnce and iPneno Instead

China has adopted its own way of dealing with the latest and hottest technology. For Apple, Chinese market matters a lot. Chinese people are simply crazy about iPhone and every Chinese wish to buy one, even if they cannot afford it. Recently, it was reported that a teenager had sold his kidney in exchange of an iPhone. The tale tells that how popular iPhone is among Chinese people. And, in case you too cannot afford a real iPhone, ‘iPhnce’ and ‘iPneno’ are great options to choose from. These knockoffs also carry an Apple logo on them.
The “fake” iPhones have great demand in China. The counterfeit technology looks identical to the genuine product at a quick glance. Of course, these phones do not run iOS. But these fake products give a feel of one with customized overlay that is made to resemble the original user interface.

Folks at LA Times have discovered more funny things about electronic piracy and fake products in the Chinese market. Walking up in Shanghai streets, more hilarious named alternatives of popular tech companies were discovered. Motorola counterfeits are called Motoralo, Samsung is called Smusvng and Nokia is known as Nioka.
Moreover, Ciri smart voice TV, inspired from Siri – the virtual assistant in iPhone 4S, has been developed by a Chinese firm – Changhong. Siri transforms iPhone into a talking assistant to control functioning of the smartphone. On the other hand, Ciri mutates TV into a talking TV. Changhong is originally an electronics and smartphones manufacturer in China.
China is a hotbed for counterfeit electronics goods and boasts of a booming pirated software market and sometimes, a “fake” iPhone that looks identical to the original iPhone with the same form factor, sells for as much as 2,000 yuan ($330). So, if you don’t want to dig deep into your pocket, you know where to get a cheap knock-off.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Latest iPhone 5 Rumors, Specs, iOS 6 Release Date, WWDC …
Last week Apple [NASDAQ: AAPL] announced their wildly popular World Wide Developers conference (WWDC). As you know WWDC is known for big surprises and major product announcements. Historically, new iPhones and new operating systems have been revealed. And with the event only a few weeks away, the rumor mill surrounding Apple’s newest iPhone, the iPhone 5 is heating up. The biggest unknown has been the iPhone 5 release date, but the WWDC announcement might throw us a few hints. And not to be overlooked is the pending release of iOS 6, which you can bet will be released at WWDC. That’s right the iOS 6 release date will be aligned with Apple’s WWDC.
Here are the latest in iPhone rumors including what we’ve heard about the iPhone5 release date.
iPhone 5 Release Date
Even though Apple has unveiled iPhone’s at previous WWDC events, I wouldn’t expect to see the iPhone 5 unveiled at WWDC this year, sorry fanboys. Apple broke their cycle of announcing new iPhones in June last year when they announced the iPhone 4S in the fall. There have also been reports of supply issues that are delaying the iPhone5 release date until at least September and possibly October.
As mentioned above, I would expect to see the sixth generation of Apple’s mobile operating system, otherwise known as iOS 6 unveiled at WWDC 2012. Unveiling iOS 6 in June also hints at a definite fall release of the iPhone 5 which will of course be running iOS 6.
iPhone 5 Specs
First is a much larger iPhone screen – this of course has been on Apple fanboys wishlist since day one (see report below). Next is 4G LTE compatibility for the iPhone5. Apple is currently late to the game with this as most Android phones are already using the 4G network. Third, a quad core processor and upgraded chipset. Next, is the potential of a 3D camera for the iPhone. Last but not least is the introduction of a “LiquidMetal” casing which would allow for a stronger and unique casing. Check out the report below. iPhone 5 Concept
iPhone 5 Concepts are a dime a dozen, but this video mockup from Aatma Studios is pretty cool. Regardless of which concepts are actually applied to the iPhone 5 (if any) the video is pretty creative. And we do know that Apple is looking at using a LiquidMetal casing, so these could actually work. Take a look:
There are of course the latest iPhone 5 rumors, we won’t know for sure until it is actually released. Please take them with a grain of salt.

While Apple iPhone 5 release date rumors and news continue to surface online, consumers are wondering what features, specs, and concept the 2012 smartphone will include. Apple is keeping all information about the unconfirmed handset under lock and key, but analyst have given their two cents on what they feel the next Apple gadget will sport.
Apple lovers are enjoying speculation about when they will have their new handset, and what features it will include. and a recent article has given clues about what fans may see with the next model. Though everything is speculation, some of the rumored changes are interesting.
The iPhone 5 release date is expected sometime between June and October, and the handset may sport liquid-metal components, 3D technology, as well as a 4″ screen. Though this screen size is only slightly larger than that of the current models, it will make a significant differences for fans who like to view media and play games on their handset.
Additional rumors claim the 6th generation Apple smartphone will be twenty percent thinner than earlier models. What will a thinner iPhone 5 concept mean though? Will such a small percentage really make a difference? Is Apple sacrificing quality in making a thinner model?
It seems a thinner model would also mean an increased risk to damage or breaking, but this is also where the liquid metal technology rumor comes in to play. Supposedly Apple is implementing this technology into their next smartphone to decrease size, while also minimizing damage to the handset should it be dropped.
This seems like a great feature, but what about the iPhone carriers who insist on putting their mobile device in their pocket? Though not the brightest idea, it does happen. This must make some people wonder, if this thinner device rumor is true, how many broken iPhone complaints will surface once this new model hits the scene?

The iPhone 5 could be launching at this year’s WorldWide Developers Conference, set to take place in June, according to a report received by tech blog YouMobile yesterday.
The report also revealed that the handset will be 20 percent thinner than the current iPhone and will feature a 4-inch display with a higher DPI resolution.
WWDC takes place from June 11-15 in San Francisco, California.
In 2010, Apple launched the iPhone 4 during the event and the device went on to become one of the most popular Apple handsets to date.
The iPhone 5′s unveiling taking place at WWDC 2012 is still just a rumor since Apple has not confirmed any news regarding the device.
Other rumors that have surfaced about its release date have said that is could launch much later in the year. The iPhone 4S came out during an event hosted by Apple in October named “Let’s Talk About iPhone.”

Some insiders are reporting that Apple will launch the next generation iPhone in the fall of 2012.
The October release was backed by Qualcomm, a company that manufactures parts for the iPhone who issued a report stating that there were issues with producing chips that would be needed to power the next-generation of LTE devices.
The iPhone 5 will most likely be an LTE device since the new iPad launched back in March and is compatible with the network.
Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster commented on the issue at Qualcomm stating that it points to the iPhone’s launch getting pushed back until October.
“QCOM will likely support an Apple iPhone launch in October. Based on our checks, we believe the design win momentum of QCOM’s 28nm products has been exceptionally strong and a 28nm LTE baseband is likely designed to the next iPhone,” said Munster.

China represents an “enormous” growth potential for the iPhone and Apple, with the possibility to sell 25 million iPhones in 2012 and 35 million iPhones in 2013.
The estimated iPhone sales in China come from Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore, who says that the iPhone is “just getting started in China.”, reports AppleInsider.
Apple partners with China Telecom and China Unicom, which should serve a combined 300 million 3G subscribers in 2013. According to Whitemore, Apple could reach 20% to 25% of the market in 2013, resulting in iPhone sales of 35 million in China.
While we expect that the iPhone 5 will be 4G LTE capable, a version sold in China would likely connect to 3G and slower networks.
China Mobile is not an official Apple partner in China, but 15 million iPhones connect to the carrier’s network. These 15 million iPhone users put up with slower than 3G speeds because the iPhone is not compatible with the carrier’s network. We’ve seen users sacrifice speed for the iPhone in the U.S., where customers use the iPhone on T-Mobile at 2G speeds.
An official partnership between China Mobile and Apple would give Apple access to an estimated 425 million 3G customers, a number that isn’t factored into the 35 million iPhone sales in 2013.
Apple currently holds less than 10% of the market in China, but the iPhone 5 release and a China Mobile partnership offers an opportunity to take marketshare from Samsung and Nokia.
Deutsche Bank set a target of $650 for AAPL stock based on the potential for increased iPhone sales and the upcoming iPhone 5 launch. This target is conservative compared to estimates of AAPL at $1,000 a share.

Speculation surrounding the upcoming iPhone (iPhone 5…6? New new iPhone?) is unsurprisingly furious. Rumors have been flying around about a liquidmetal body, a thinner touchscreen, and larger display, and even a redesigned home button. The newest feature that might grace the new iPhone blows all of those out of the water.
Don’t worry about losing your next-gen device, because chances are, the thief won’t be able to enjoy it. In fact, they probably won’t even be able to unlock it.
That’s because once they type the wrong passcode in three times, your new iPhone will self-destruct.

Apple patent suggests NFC for iPhone 5
We’ve been on a roll of iPhone 5 rumors in recent weeks as Apple’s [AAPL] speculation explores the next expected big product release, now a new ‘gifting’ patent filing hints at an NFC (Near Field Communications) future for Cupertino’s smartphone, perhaps inside the next model.

iPhone 5? It’s a gift…
Patently Apple last week spotted a new patent for gifting media purchased in iTunes from one user to another, using NFC or email to secure the exchange. The patent offers solutions which will let users share iTunes Playlists (at a cost) and also describes ways in which you will be able to pass your gifted track or album to others just by waving your iPhone near theirs. And yes, this also relates to other forms of media content.
I’m not arguing this form of gift-giving has the same cachet as passing a CD or DVD along to a friend, but it’s a step toward loosening those digital rights to better reflect the full package of rights you get with physical product sales. The right to bequeath your music and media collection in the event of your death remains something to be fought for, for example, but that’s not the focus of this report.
The focus instead is on how within this patent filing Apple has described yet another use for NFC technology. What’s also interesting is that the original patent filing was made in 2008. This isn’t the first NFC-based patent Apple has filed: Patently Apple has a handy list of these here — there’s loads of these, mainly confined to payment processing implementations.
Building out the NFC ecosystem
What does this tell us? As previously reported the patents suggest Apple’s assembling all the pieces it needs to introduce a range of NFC-supporting services when it does eventually field NFC support within iOS devices.
Given that whispers from within the NFC industry strongly suggest the company will introduce support for the (albeit fragmented) standard within the iPhone 5. The only hope is that Apple will choose to support both US and European implementations of NFC when it does.
So why would Apple introduce support for the technology within the quad-core iPhone 5? In my opinion, because support for the tech is reaching critical mass.
Everybody’s doing it
Carriers, payment processing firms, and retailers are preparing to embrace NFC.
- McDonalds is testing support for payments using the technology in some stores in Austria;
- In London, transportation chiefs are moving to abandon existing pre-payment systems in favor of the digital wallet.
- Device makers: Microsoft, Nokia, RIM, Samsung are all climbing aboard.
Will older devices be locked out of the new wave? That’s doubtful. Barclaycard has now introduced the PayTag service, stickers integrating an NFC chip which can be placed on devices to enable payments using the technology. In other words, no mobile will be left behind.
That NFC forms part of the future matrix for payments shouldn’t be in doubt.
In order to accelerate consumer acceptance of these new technologies, it behooves players in the space to deliver solutions beyond simple mobile payments, to deliver solutions which augment everyday life.

Part of life
Apple’s patents on ticketing, boarding passes, air travel and gifting are some of the many examples of widening the application of NFC tech into every day life. The more pervasive use of the tech becomes, the quicker it should be to encourage consumers to overcome any suspicions they might have.
In recent conversations with those involved in NFC I have gained the definite impression the industry expects the tech to hit the mainstream next year.
Apple has a reputation for bringing up-and-coming technologies to the mass market. Some may recall the impact of its 1999 AirPort and iBook launches on the then invisible WiFi industry, for example.
Certainly, other devices which support NFC from other manufacturers are already available, but the ecosystem and public awareness of the tech is only now impacting beyond technology fans. This means the time has to be right for the introduction of NFC support within a mass market device.
Apple’s latest patent filing once again proves it to be exploring NFC solutions. Should the company enter the space with introduction of NFC support within iPhone 5, then it will be offering a mass market device in tandem with a series of comprehensible and easy-to-use apps that should guarantee a good kick-start to use of these new technologies, at the same time as the industry itself kicks up a gear.
Signing off, I’ll admit this is speculative — Apple may still decide to delay introduction of the new tech to a later model device, allowing others to engage in the heavy lifting required to make the tech mainstream, but the opportunity to deliver the best in class product to match the new systems is the company’s to use.

iPhone 5 Likely To Land Before Samsung Galaxy S3 Despite 42-Day Headstart
The Samsung Galaxy S3 has ‘taken the lead’ with the manufacturer announcing its May 3rd event in London next month. The date happens to fall exactly 42 days before Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco which is scheduled for June 11th.

Now while Apple hasn’t confirmed that the iPhone 5 will launch at WWDC 2012, the odds look good. 4 of the last 5 iPhone models made their debut at the San Francisco event and word on the street is that Apple hopes to return to its summer launch schedule with the iPhone 5 which it will just dub the ‘New iPhone’.
Under the assumption that this does in fact hold true, Samsung still has a 42 day headstart over Apple and its iPhone 5. However there is one little matter that we are forgetting, how quickly the device ends up in stores. In the case of Apple, it is pretty darn quick.
When Apple launched the iPhone 4S, it arrived in US stores within a week. Same case scenario, the Samsung Galaxy S3 launched in May but only arrived in US stores sometime in September (4 months later). So even if Samsung does manage to grab a 42-day headstart with its Galaxy S3 over Apple, it will likely only be applicable in Korea, Asia and some parts of Europe. As for the US, we may see carriers like Verizon, ATT, Sprint and T-Mobile only get their hands on it in the fall.

iPhone 5 & iOS 6 hype WWDC 2012 sell out
The next iPhone is always the subject of huge amounts of debate, speculation and rumor before it finally becomes official and we’ve noticed that the hype surrounding the iPhone 5 seems to be even greater than usual. Yesterday Apple confirmed its WWDC event for 2012 and we wonder if the massive amount of hype about the iPhone 5 and also iOS 6 led to the record breaking sell out of tickets within two hours.
Yesterday we told readers about the WWDC 2012 event and how tickets had gone on sale. Many feel that iOS 6 may well get an airing during the event which runs from June 11 through June 15 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco and speculation is also rife about an iPhone 5 unveiling. However we feel that news of the iPhone 5 is less likely and although numerous leaks and conjecture has provided us with an idea of what to expect, none of this will be official until Apple chooses to disclose it.
If an iPhone 5 release is coming in June, shortly after WWDC as many feel, then of course it would be likely that we will see the big reveal at the event. However, we’re still in the school of thought that feels a fall release for the iPhone 5 is much more likely, in which case a June unveiling would seem unlikely. iDownload Blog brings news about the record breaking sell out of WWDC tickets that were priced at $1599 each.
Within 2 hours the tickets were all sold which meant that in fact many developers in the US may have missed out on tickets. Tickets went on sale at 1:30pm GMT, which meant some interested parties in the US were still sound asleep. Last year tickets took 12 hours to sell out while the year before tickets were on sale for 2 weeks before they ran out. Interest in WWDC is always extensive then but this year it seems to have hit a high and we feel that the build-up about iOS 6 as well as the iPhone 5 is a big reason for this.
There have been many murmurings that the event will focus on iOS and Mac OS X and there are plenty of people heading to WWDC who will be hoping for all the info on iOS 6. Equally though the hype surrounding the iPhone 5 will have many hoping that it may make an appearance too although as we’ve already said, there could be disappointment on this score.
