Is This The iPhone 5 Home Button?

Gotta Be Mobile » Mobile » Is This The iPhone 5 Home Button?

The next iPhone isn’t expected to launch until later this year but it appears that some parts, specifically its home button, have leaked out today in both black and in white.

First discovered by Apple Bitch, the parts are currently available through Chinese vendor TVC-Mall. The parts appear in the iPhone 5 replacement parts section of the website which was empty before these parts showed up.

TVC-Mall has in the past, offered up parts of unreleased Apple products which makes this leak fairly credible.

Is This The iPhone 5 Home Button?

Interestingly, the home buttons that have leaked out are a little different than those found on previous iOS devices. As noted by MacRumors, the new home button appears to have a rounded square look to it.

The listing notes this difference:

Different from iPhone 4S 4, the iPhone 5 home button is round in the centre and square outside as the pictures show. The two parts are indivisible.

It does, however, keep the depression that has shown up on Apple’s previous iDevices like the iPhone and the iPad. It’s unclear though if this change , if real, will be evident to consumers as that rounded square part of the button might sit below the surface of the phone’s bezel rendering it invisible to users.

If this is indeed the iPhone 5′s home button, it looks like a re-designed button is out of the question. There has been quite a bit of chatter regarding an oval shaped home button or the lack of a home button at all. But, for now, it appears that Apple will be sticking to its guns.

As for the phone itself, not much is known about it. The device is rumored to have 4G LTE capabilities and there has been talk about a thinner and lighter design. There has also been chatter in regards to the iPhone 5′s screen size.

There is also much debate as to when the iPhone is going to launch.

Previous rumors have stated that it will be launching during the summer at WWDC while others peg the iPhone 5 release date as being in the fall of 2012.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Delayed Till October Due to Supply Constraints?

While many are expecting Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone, dubbed iPhone 5, to debut in June, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, recent reports point to a more likely October release.

Reuters reported that Qualcomm was facing “trouble meeting demand for some of its advance cellphone chips for the rest of the year due to manufacturing constraints,” which will “increase operating expenses faster than expected.” With such production constraints, an October launch seems more likely. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has also moved his expectations to an October release date.

Like Us on Facebook :

“At this stage we cannot secure enough supply to meet the increasing demand we are experiencing,” said Qualcomm’s Chief Executive Paul Jacobs, during a conference call with analysts. This issue would limit revenue growth for this year, Jacobs added.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone is expected to feature Qualcomm’s MDM9615 LTE (Long Term Evolution) chipset, which allows voice and data connections over faster LTE networks. According to iDownloadBlog, the chip is also smaller and more power-efficient.

Supply Shortage Could Affect LTE Progress in General

The supply shortage involves the chips used for the latest high-speed smartphones featuring LTE technology, which could lead to a slowdown in the rollout of LTE smartphones, Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon told Reuters. Rasgon did not comment on Apple specifically, but said this supply shortage could affect LTE progress in general.

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster points in the same direction. In a note to investors last week, Munster wrote that even if Apple had indeed wanted to launch the new iPhone before October, such supply constraints with Qualcomm LTE chips would push back the release date. Munster now expects the highly-anticipated iPhone to debut in October, a full year after the launch of the iPhone 4S.

October Launch More Likely

“It is more likely the phone launches in October given Qualcomm commentary around 28nm chip supply,” Munster said, as reported by Apple Insider. “We believe Apple will include LTE in the iPhone 5 as an important feature in the product update.” The analyst had previously expected an August debut for the sixth-generation iPhone.

On the other hand, Munster wrote in an earlier note that the launch date for Apple’s next-generation iPhone is of little concern, considering the demand is “captive.” According to the analyst, the new iPhone will be a “compelling” upgrade, unlike the slightly improved iPhone 4S, and would feature a new body design.

Apple’s next iPhone: 5 rumored features

Image: Apple © BECK DIEFENBACH//ReutersThe iPhone 4S may still be flying off store shelves, but whispers about the next iPhone’s potential features are already beginning to surface.  The iPhone 5 (if it’s even called that) reportedly will feature a a whole new redesign, and may hit shelves as soon as October, according to reports citing a variety of insider sources along Apple‘s (AAPL) supply chain.

Here, five rumored features Apple could be looking to incorporate into its best-selling handset:

1. A new metal body
Apple’s next iPhone will feature “a new chassis design,” says Christina Bonnington at Wired. It may even be “housed in Liquidmetal, the commercial name for an alloy of titanium, zirconium, nickel, copper, and other metals.” The “amorphous” alloy can be poured into a molding like plastic to produce ultra-thin and durable parts. When it hardens, Liquidmetal retains “high strength, high resistance to wear against scratching and denting, and [has] a good strength-to-weight ratio.” Once cooled, it looks “smooth like liquid.” Such an alloy may bestow the next iPhone “its special swagger.” Eh, let’s not get too excited, says Adrian Kingsley-Hughes at ZDNet. While Liquidmetal is indeed “incredibly tough stuff,” it might not be that conducive to radio frequencies. Remember Antennagate?

2. A larger screen

The next iPhone may feature a much larger display – possibly 4.6 inches versus its current 3.5-inch set up – and Apple has already started placing orders to its suppliers, reports Reuters. While that sounds nice, making “a 4.6-inch display would mean that the size of the iPhone itself would be much larger than it currently is,” says Jordan Crook at TechCrunch. And that doesn’t seem realistic. More likely: Apple is working on a 4-inch display to “fit on to the iPhone at its current size.” Keeping the same iPhone size sounds more like an Apple move, says MG Seigler at Parislemon. ”A device that stays the same size, but gets a slightly larger screen for one more row of apps”? Exciting stuff.

3. Less glass

The curent iPhone’s touchscreen uses two separate layers to achieve its effect: A touch sensor layer and an LCD display layer, which are stacked on top of each another. But Apple is said to be introducing “in-cell touch panels on its next iPhone,” says Josh Ong at Apple Insider, which means the two space-hogging layers will be consolidated into one. That means Apple could produce an iPhone measuring just 7.9 mm thick – noticeably thinner than the iPhone 4S’s 9.6 mm.

4. 4G LTE … and a better battery
Apple already introduced “the high-speed network on its new iPad,” says Dave Smith at the International Business Times, which was probably done as a “practice run” for the iPhone. But the main problem with LTE is that it tends to “ravage battery life.” If the company wanted it on the iPhone 4S, it would have had to “increase the phone’s thickness” to accomodate a larger battery. Now that Apple appears to be shaving off millimeters here and there, the next iPhone could receive the bigger (and better) battery required to handle faster networks.

5. iWallet
On March 6, Apple won a “major patent” for technology called the “iWallet,” says IBT’s Smith, which allows users “complete control over their subsidiary financial accounts on their iPhones.” The technology uses Near-Field Communication to make credit card transactions by holding the device next to a payment console, effectively turning the iPhone into a digital wallet.

Why we shouldn’t get too excited about a ‘Liquidmetal’ iPhone 5

The shell of the iPhone 4 and 4S is constructed of robust stainless steel sandwiched between two sheets of fragile glass. It’s a revolutionary design, but one that has caused a lot of heartache and expense for owners.

According to a rumor that surfaced last week, this could change with the next-generation iPhone, where the vulnerable rear glass panel will be replaced with a robust Liquidmetal shell.

Liquidmetal is the commercial name given to an amorphous metal alloy that is almost twice as strong as the strongest titanium alloys. It was developed by Caltech in 2003 and has been used in a broad range of military, medical, luxury, consumer, industrial, and sporting goods products.

In August 2012, Apple acquired a license to use this material, but has yet to use it for anything more exciting than the iPhone’s SIM card eject tool.

I’ve come across Liquidmetal before: a SanDisk Cruzer Titanium USB flash drive. SanDisk also used Liquidmetal in the construction of the now long defunct Sensa e200 media player.

It’s incredibly tough stuff, and I really tested the durability of that flash drive. Short of taking a hammer to it, I could barely put a scratch, let alone a dent, in the thin shell surrounding the drive’s delicate electronics.

There’s no doubt that Liquidmetal is incredibly tough stuff. You might think that a Liquidmetal iPhone 5 would be a near-indestructible piece of kit?

Wrong.

To begin with, one side of iPhone is still made up of exposed glass, and let’s face it, the screen is far more expensive — not to mention more difficult — to replace that the rear cover is. But there’s also a weird property of Liquidmetal that means a dropped Liquidmetal iPhone could suffer more damage than if the back were made of glass.

Liquidmetal is, as you can see from the video below, excellent at storing elastic energy. This, to you and me, means the material likes to bounce about with Flubber-like vigor when dropped.

I’ve seen this property in action. That SanDisk Cruzer Titanium flash drive I had would bounce enthusiastically whenever dropped onto a hard surface. A bouncing flash drive is one thing, but a bouncing iPhone is another, and likely to suffer more overall damage than one that just thuds to the ground because each bounce is another chance for gravity to break the screen.

I don’t think that it is Liquidmetal’s indestructibility that Apple is interested in, because let’s face it, Apple doesn’t have a track record of building robust devices, but instead the material’s high strength-to-weight ratio that interests the Apple engineers.

This property means that you can cast a shell out of Liquidmetal that’s much thinner than a shell stamped out of a sheet of metal, as was the case with the early iPhones, or machined out of a block of aluminium, which is how Apple manufactures the shells of devices such as the MacBooks or iPads. A thinner shell means less space taken up per unit volume by the casing, which in turn leaves more space for the important stuff that goes inside the device.

But there’s one property of Liquidmetal that no one seems to have considered. How transparent is this material to radio frequencies?

If the material doesn’t allow for effective passage of radio frequencies, moving all the iPhone’s antennas — GSM, CDMA, UMTS, GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth — inside a Liquidmetal shell doesn’t make sense. I’ve had a look through the tech specs for the material but can’t find anything relating to this. I’ve put a question in to Liquidmetal Technologies about radio frequency transmission, and will update this post if I get an answer.

iPhone 5 to have ‘nano’ companion

Now that we’re within a half-year of the next Apple iPhone being launched, the iPhone 5 rumors, tips, and secret confirmations are flying – today’s being a whole bonus model for the masses. It’s the “iPhone nano” that we’re hearing about today, straight from the China Times to your doorstep. This tip comes from that continent and suppliers which remain unnamed saying that they are, indeed, creating units which point to a low-cost entry-level iPhone for the next generation iPhone 5 this fall.

This tip may well come right on time with the iPad Mini being tipped as well, wouldn’t you say? On the other hand, it could also be that these manufacturers and suppliers are speaking about the same device – could Apple be making a smart device which is both “next generation” and inexpensive? We’re sure many folks who use their iPhone or their iPad on the regular would say that they didn’t pay too much for their device which they use multiple times a day every day, no cost can be put on such a helpful device.

But therein lies the situation which Apple may be looking to address: at what price does that convenience become accessible to all income levels? Looking back at right before the iPhone 4S was released, it was predicted that the next-generation iPhone 5 (as we suspected it would be called at the time) would be free, the carriers fronting the cost to Apple while they racked up cash in mobile data alone. The economic landscape might be ripe enough this time around to make that situation a reality – and not just with legacy models.

What do you think, folks, will we see a “nano” iPhone this autumn?

Collected: Apple iPhone 5 to be under 8mm thin, ships Fall

Apple [AAPL] may plan its thinnest smartphone yet, aiming to shave the iPhone 5 to just under 8mm through use of new display technology, that’s the latest  breakfast rumor this Monday morning.

[ABOVE: The queue for last October's iPhone 4S launch in Tokyo. Will the new iPhone get the same reception? Probably.]

The new iPhone

Last week we think we learned iPhone 5 may be produced with new LiquidMetal alloys, and that it would also feature a new display technology called in-cell. At that time the claim came from DisplaySearch VP, David Hsieh, who explained the new displays would come from Sony, Sharp and Toshiba.

Today we hear from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also thinks the next iPhone will deploy in-cell touch panels, as first reported by AppleInsider.

This new tech embeds the touch sensor within the screen. This removes the need for an extra touch-sensitive layer bound to the screen, as used in existing iPhones. Removing that layer could help chop 0.44mm from the depth of the device.

It goes further: the analyst says he thinks Apple intends breaking the 8mm mark with the next iPhone. Current models are 9.3mm thick. Conceivably, use of LiquidMetal alloys and the new display tech could help shave 1.3mm or more off of the thickness of the device.

Manufacturing improvements

There’s another advantage: these displays take significantly less time to manufacture, and the manufacturing process offers better production yields. Production procedures could be “cut from eight to five“, while production time could fall to 3-5 days from 12-16 days.

That’s significant as it could enable Apple/Foxconn to churn out more phones at a faster rate and — potentially — reduce production costs.

If the latter speculation is correct, then this could also enable Apple to reduce the cost of its devices. Kuo suggests the cost saving could be in the region of 10 percent to 20 percent. I can already imagine the marketing: “iPhone 5, the thinnest smartphone, ever – from $169.”

The device would also be faster (new processors) and likely equipped with better graphics. Given these advantages, any move to reduce the product’s price would apply further pressure on competing devices, which don’t achieve the sheer sales numbers Apple gets with its iPhone. That’s important as that arithmetic enables the company to secure components at prices other firms cannot match.

Not June, fragmented LTE/NFC promise

There’s two other nuggets in the report:

– The iPhone will not ship in June. This analyst also predicts a Fall/October release. I’ll stress once again that this makes more sense to me, as it enables Apple to tap into the huge Christmas market — not a bad idea as people’s pocketbooks remain squeezed by the economic challenges presently faced by developed nations worldwide.

– The iPhone 5 may not be the iPhone 5. Kuo suggests Apple will abandon its semi-consecutive numbering system, referring to the device as “the new iPhone”.

Kuo also anticipates the new iPhone will offer 4G/LTE support. What isn’t clear yet is if Apple will focus on the LTE standards used in North America, or if it will introduce LTE devices which also work on 4G networks worldwide.

From my point of view that’s no deal-breaker as there are no 4G networks in the UK at time of writing. The faster mobile broadband semi-standard isn’t expected to become commonplace worldwide until 2013 at the earliest.

Also unclear is if the new iPhone will indeed deliver support for NFC payments. That’s another standard in which US payment providers have adopted one NFC implementation, while those outside the country have chosen an alternative system.

Apple’s challenge with both NFC and LTE will be battery life. If it focuses only on its North American markets it will create a wave of dissatisfaction among its millions of customers outside of the region. Yet if the firm adopts solutions capable of running on 4G and NFC networks in and outside the US, what impact might that support have on battery life?

Summing up for those watching the iPhone 5 story, it now seems the new iPhone will appear in Fall, and will be thinner, faster and, perhaps, slightly cheaper than the current edition. Use of LiquidMetal tech suggests the product may be very different-looking, too.

Samsung recently passed Nokia to become the world’s biggest phone company.

Bloggers and other tech fans have already ‘leaked’ details of the new handset – including a video purported to be of a finished model.

The
Samsung Galaxy S3, expected to rival the iPhone when it goes on sale
next month, has appeared online in a Vietnamese video posted on YouTube.

The
gadget appears to have  a 4.6-inch display and a 720p display, with the
handset being powered by a 1.4Ghz quad core processor.

More on iPhone 5-beater Samsung S3…

You can now beat the race and be the first to get the new Samsung S3 the latest android device that is fast emerging as the best alternate to the new iPhone5.

While Samsung is officially set to release the new S3 ahead of Apple’s new iPhone, on May 3, Amazon in Germany has already listed the product for pre-order.

Amazon.de has listed the product for €599 (Dh2,906) with features a 12Megapixel camera a 4.7-inch Super Amoled screen, 16GB of internal storage apart from a micro SD card slot.

Although the website has not displayed any images for the new product, Gizmodo Brazil has listed (not so great) images on its website.

Click here to read: iPhone 5 vs Samsung S3: Which one is better

According to online tech blog site Boy Genius Reports (BGR) the phone could well be the official device of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Samsung has planned a launch event in London on May 3 and it is widely believed that the company will launch its new phone on the occasion.

The website also quotes sources and says that there could be simultaneous launches in Dubai, Ney York City and Seoul.

An invitation for the London event simply reads: “Come and meet the next Galaxy.”

Specs’ forecast

There are quite a few rumours on the specifications of the new SIII, with some predicting that it will come in two colours – one in blue and black and the second in white.

The other predicted features are a 16GB and 32GB handsets aprt from full HD display a quad-core Exynos processor and integrated 4G LTE.

There were reports earlier that the new S3 might include a new human interaction feature that will use the front camera to keep track of the user’s eye movement and lock the screen accordingly.

Reports also indicate that the new smartphone will feature a 4.7-inch display and have features that could almost match the Apple’s Retina Display.

The Exynos Quad.-core 1.5GHz processing chip along with 1GB of RAM would bring the S3 closer to the best in business.

iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S3: Steel Mill vs Pottery Barn?

While the Samsung Galaxy S3 is arguably the most hyped Android smartphone of 2012, there is no telling yet just how ‘big’ the iPhone 5 will be when some steady details begin to surface about it other than just reports from analysts and suppliers.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy S3: Casing rumors

If you’re waiting to upgrade to an Android smartphone, chances are you don’t plan on making a move until May 3rd just so you can see what the Samsung Galaxy S3 is all about. And if you’re an iPhone fan, then it will likely mean that you will pass up all temptations until Apple reveals the iPhone 5 either at WWDC 2012 this summer or later in the fall as some reports suggest.

While rumors of both devices suggest that they may have similar upgrades from their predecessors (faster processor, more RAM, better camera, bigger display), there is one major difference – the exterior casing.

If you’ve been following both Samsung Galaxy S3 and iPhone 5 rumors then you will be well aware of reports that suggest the iPhone 5 exterior casing will be composed of liquid metal, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 will go with ceramic. Given that the predecessors (iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S3) were glass/aluminum and plastic respectively, the rumors seem to be true. Both appear to be taking it to the next level, although the iPhone 5 and its liquidmetal ‘sounds’ more awesome (anyone else thinking of Terminator?). Infact, what liquid metal really is is a  zirconium-based alloy which is more durable and lighter than other metals.

Now before you dismiss the Samsung Galaxy S3 and its choice of ceramic, it is important to note that the ceramic isn’t all too bad and word on the street is that it will have a similar finish to those Rado ceramic watches which have been appreciated for its high gloss finish and scratch resistance.

Coincidentally, both liquidmetal and ceramic actually go very well together. Take for instance the OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal Limited Edition watch which bonds ceramics and Liquidmetal in one body.

When liquidmetal and ceramic get along
