iPhone 5 vs multiple Android 5.0 devices with “Nexus” branding? (Rumor)

May 16th, 2012, 2:50 P.M.Google, the biggest search engine in our solar system, is reportedly changing its smartphone strategy this year to sell more “pure Android” devices, and will distribute it online and directly from its own inventory.

From launching 1 device per year, Google, with its Android operating system, is set to introduce at least five Nexus devices from various phone manufacturers. Can this strategy work against Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5?

Ahead of the rumored September or October release date of the iPhone 5, Google, with its popular mobile operating system, Android, is reportedly set to change its Nexus strategy this year. From a single device per year–to a jaw-dropping, and exciting 5 devices this year coming from its partners. The new story also added that Google will retail the devices directly using its new Google Play Online Store that accepts all major credit cards and debit cards. In short, the pre-order, and order processes will soon be easier.

According to a Wall Street Journal article posted on Tuesday, Google is “shifting its strategy” this year mainly to sell more pure-Android smartphones and tablet computers, and putting its customers away from cluttered, heavy and most of the time, unattractive custom user interface tweaks implemented by mobile phone manufacturers and wireless providers. For starters, pure Google Android operating system comes with no “custom skin,” and no wireless carrier applications pre-installed or apps from manufacturers themselves.

With the new and revamped strategy, customers can now choose their preferred manufacturer, line Samsung, HTC or Motorola for example, and not with just one option like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus last year. The new strategy, in my opinion, is better than previous Nexus program largely because some customers hate Samsung, or HTC or one specific handset maker, but almost all Android buyers love Google or Android.

WSJ also added that Google will unveil the new version of Android this fall alongside the new smartphone strategy–and the update is called “Jelly Bean,” an upgrade from the current version called Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The new Jelly Bean operating system is expected to introduce a slightly revamped user interface and new features, separate reports have noted.

If this new report is accurate, then it is possible that participating phone makers will compete with others by introducing attractive smartphones, and with the latest and greatest hardware available. For example, Samsung and HTC this year introduced their flagship phones, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X–both running Android Ice Cream Sandwich, and both are “well-spec’d” but Samsung has decided to use plastic, while HTC has chosen polycarbonate. Not all customers want a new plastic phone. Another example, HTC’s One X packs a smaller battery, with a shorter battery life, while Samsung’s Galaxy S3 features a larger and better battery with, apparently, a longer battery life.

Another scenario that is worth mentioning is the design-only scenario where phone makers are set to follow the same specs, like similar CPU and same display, and to compete with each other in the “design” department.

“The more, the merrier,” but can this new strategy work against the iPhone 5? According to rumors, Apple’s new iPhone will go on sale next quarter, and it will introduce a new design, packed with a new display, reportedly larger than the current model’s 3.5-inch screen, and will run on Long Term Evolution networks. Analysts believe that the iPhone 5 will allow Apple to gain a hefty market share this year, but it looks like Google, and its Android partners, are in the defense position already.

Apple iPhone 5

The next instalment in the iPhone story is supposedly going to be endowed with a 4″ screen. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple has placed an order with its “Asian suppliers.” I wish I had “Asian suppliers”… I’d drop that in conversations all the time.

If true (and we won’t really know until the phone actually drops), the bigger screen represents a significant departure from a formula Apple has stuck to since the original iPhone dropped in 2007. Even with an increase in resolution in the Retina display, the physical dimensions of the screen have not changed.

Meanwhile, the Android world has quite a large range of screen sizes. Samsung’s new baby, the Galaxy SIII—likely to be iPhone 5′s biggest competition this year, sports a 4.8″ display. So size is one thing you won’t find iPhone users bragging about. Instead, I’m sure, they’ll be focusing on how it’s used.

Sharp NERV phone

Speaking of phones… OMFG—I would dump my iPhone in a flash for this! The Japanese—who else would make a phone with a cartoon’s aesthetic so deeply integrated into its interface and case design?

Now, I’m not at all enamoured by the Android world (yet), but I’d jump the fence for this one. Not much else to say, so here’s a video:

Macbook Pro

The Macbook Pro is well over due for an overhaul. I won’t talk too much about it because we just know it’s going to be faster. All the numbers will be bigger where it matters. And perhaps the case is going to be thinner (maybe)…

The real news here is that someone thinks Macbook Pro is going to have a Retina display. That is to say; a display with the same pixel density as your iPhone 4/4S and the new iPad.

Not excited? Ask a photographer/photo retoucher, CAD user (do they exist in the Mac world?), typographer, movie editor… anyone who uses Photoshop and they will tell you this is going to be a significant leap in technology.

If true, I predict this display is going to be a massive draw card for the creative industry. I mean, right now, I’m writing on my iPad with my face 30cm away and I can’t see any pixels. That’s what it’s all about.

In-flight calling on Virgin

I’m not much of a telephone user. With the exception of about two people in my life, I will do my very best to avoid a phone conversation with everyone. So I’m probably not the type of customer who Virgin’s new in-flight calling service is aimed at.

Passengers flying London to New York will be able to use their own mobiles to make phone calls.

Reasons you might need to make a phone call from a Virgin flight:

1.    You’re a stock broker and you can’t afford your own private jet since 2008

2.    You’re the head of a newspaper empire and you want to listen in on someone else’s conversations

3.    You’re in a 9/11 situation

4.    You’re still on hold to Telstra

5.    You want to annoy the fuck out of the person next to you

Actually, just on point no. 3, the US bans in-flight calling so passengers will have to hang up their mobiles once the flight approaches US airspace.

Max Payne 3

Max Payne 3 drops tomorrow. If you haven’t noticed, we’re quite excited about it here at TheVine. Whilst it has already been released in the US, we Aussies are getting it on Friday because we’ve got shit to do during the week.

That’s enough said about it. Standby for a review as soon as we can tear ourselves away from the console.

Virus power

Researchers Berkeley have developed a way to generate power with a piezo-electric device that employs a virus as its active component—or should that be ‘piezo-electrically generates power’? I don’t know because clearly I don’t understand what I’m talking about.

All I know is that it’s something that could revolutionise the way I use mobile computing and gaming and THAT SHIT IS IMPORTANT! Go on Berkeley scientists and make my world better.

Apple wins iPhone5.com domain dispute, ordered to be transferred

Earlier this month, Apple moved to gain control of iPhone 5.com from a domain squatter who was using it for a forum full of ads. The company filed a dispute with the World Intellectual Property Organization, who today appears to have granted Apple’s request. As The Next Web reports, the squatter has relinquished control of the domain and control has now been moved to a brand protection agency called Corporation Service Company, which Apple could be using to take control.

Don’t let yourself think this confirms the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5, as Apple often works to get its rightful domains off squatters. Last July, Apple gained control of iPods.com and was given full ownership of the domain. The folks in Cupertino have been know to throw around cash for domains, like when they reportedly purchased iCloud.com for $4.5 million. The terms of today’s deal haven’t been disclosed.

When Apple follows the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, like they did in this case, they end up paying thousands, rather than millions to gain control. Will Apple continue on to gain control of domains like iPhone5.com, iPad.com, and Macs.com? Check out the full policy below to get an idea of how this works:

All registrars must follow the the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (often referred to as the “UDRP”). Under the policy, most types of trademark-based domain-name disputes must be resolved by agreement, court action, or arbitration before a registrar will cancel, suspend, or transfer a domain name. Disputes alleged to arise from abusive registrations of domain names (for example, cybersquatting) may be addressed by expedited administrative proceedings that the holder of trademark rights initiates by filing a complaint with an approved dispute-resolution service provider.

iPhone 5: Larger iPhone Screens Confirmed, Rumored Specs, iOS 6 Release Date …

Apple is back in the news today with a plethora of reports that we can expect to see a much larger screen on the upcoming iPhone 5. YES! This news of course comes just weeks before the wildly popular World Wide Developers (WWDC) conference coming in June. This is only the beginning the the iPhone 5 rumor mill, expect iPhone 5 rumors all summer. Historically, WWDC is known for big surprises and major product announcements. In the past new iPhones, new Macs, new iPods and updates to the operating systems have all been announced. However, this year it looks like we are only in store guaranteed OS updates – there are rumors around iPods and new Macs though. And the biggest unknown has been the iPhone 5 release date, however the WWDC announcement might throw us a few hints. With the biggest announcement being that the iOS 6 release date will be aligned with Apple’s WWDC you should expect to see an iPhone 5 release date this fall.

Here are the latest in iPhone rumors including what we’ve heard about the iPhone5 release date. Including one report that offers some potentially incredible details surrounding the iPhone 5 specs and design and another that confirms that we will in fact see a much larger screen on the iPhone.

iPhone 5 Release Date

This fall, no questions. The release date questions are now between September or October. Even though Apple has unveiled iPhone’s at previous WWDC events, the iPhone 5 will not be unveiled at WWDC this year. Apple broke their cycle of announcing new iPhones in June last year when they announced the iPhone 4S in the fall. There have also been reports of supply issues that are delaying the iPhone5 release date until at least September and possibly October. Unveiling iOS 6 in June also hints at a definite fall release of the iPhone 5 which will of course be running iOS 6.

iPhone 5 Potential Specs

We’ll start with today’s breaking news, then jump back in to the rumor mill. According to the WSJ, “The new screens measure at least 4 inches diagonally, the people said, compared with 3.5 inches on Apple’s latest model, the iPhone 4S. Production is set to begin next month, the people said. Analysts have predicted that the next iPhone will come out in the fall.”

Next is 4G LTE compatibility for the iPhone5. Apple is currently late to the game with this as most Android phones are already using the 4G network. Third, a quad core processor and upgraded chipset. Next, is the potential of a 3D camera for the iPhone. Last but not least is the introduction of a “LiquidMetal” casing which would allow for a stronger and unique casing. Check out the report below. In addition to a few new specs, you can expect to see an updated operating system aka iOS 6. Here are some rumors surrounding the iOS 6 release date.

Aside from the above iPhone spec rumors, here is a recent report offering some detail into the new iPhone size, screen and a new connector. From ilounge:

What we’ve learned: the new iPhone will indeed be longer and thinner than the iPhone 4 and 4S. Approximate measurements are 125mm by 58.5mm by 7.4mm—a 10mm jump in height, nearly 2mm reduction in thickness, and virtually identical width. According to our source, Apple will make one major change to the rear casing, adding a metal panel to the central back of the new iPhone. This panel will be flat, not curved, and metal, not ceramic. Our artist’s rendition provides a rough idea of what this change will look like; it echoes the current-generation iMac design, to be sure.

iPhone 5 release date & 4-inch rumors all-but confirmed

<!–
–>The iPhone 5 release date is basically now known. And the rumors of a larger, 4-inch screen are all-but confirmed. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), of course, ain’t sayin’ nuffin’. In IT Blogwatch, when no less of an organ than the WSJ says it, bloggers sit up and listen.

By Richi Jennings: Your humble blogwatcher curated these bloggy bits for your entertainment. Not to mention: Shrimp!..

Lorraine Luk and Juro Osawa have their ears to the ground:

The new screens measure at least 4 inches diagonally. … Apple declined to comment. … The iPhone has had a 3.5-inch screen since…its debut 2007.

But the market has evolved rapidly…with many brands in various sizes and prices. … Samsung shipped 44.5 million smartphones to grab 30.6%…in the first quarter, topping Apple’s 24.1%.    M0RE

Reiji Murai triangulates and all-but confirms:

The new iPhone screens will measure 4 inches from corner to corner. … Early production of the new screens has begun at…Korea’s LG Display Co Ltd, Sharp Corp and Japan Display Inc. … That would allow the new iPhone to go into production as soon as August.

The share of the production of new screens that go to each of the three manufacturers working with Apple has not been determined.    M0RE

So Jonny Evans rallies the faithful:

Coming as it does from a respected source these claims will ignite expectation. … Given the need to stockpile millions of these displays…commencing display production marries well with claims of a September launch.

A related report yesterday claimed Apple to have booked huge memory chip orders with Japanese firm, Elpida. … With Samsung emerging as Apple’s biggest…opponent in the smartphone space, it’s no surprise Apple’s chosen to abandon [it]…when it comes to display and memory production.

Apple appears to have…ensured its next iPhone…[is] guaranteed to give its competitors a black eye.    M0RE

And Adrian Kingsley-Hughes talks dimensionality:

There are two ways that Apple could increase the size of the screen while maintaining a high pixel density count. … Doubling the screen resolution to 1920×1280 would be the one option. … But it’s highly unlikely that Apple could pull this sort of density off for the next incarnation of the iPhone.

Another option is that Apple could change the screen aspect ratio…increasing this to 16:9…could allow for a 4-inch screen to maintain pixel density…while also allowing the screen to fit into a handset no bigger than the current iPhone.    M0RE

But Lynn Walford just rolls her eyes (her eyes her eyes):

Here we go with iPhone 5 conjecturatti, again. … ll that we can know for sure about the iPhone 5 is that it will sell like iPhones.

Last year’s…rumors were about 50% accurate, however, we didn’t get the…full specs until it was officially announced. … [This time] Apple may use the iPhone 5 name because it is suing the owner of iPhone5.com.    M0RE

And Finally…
Shrimp!
[Another ridiculous ear-worm from Mr. Weebl, with help from Greasy Moose]

Will the iPhone 5 be the first 128GB iPhone?

Since the introduction of the iPhone, Apple has pushed the storage capacity higher with almost every release.

In 2009, Apple announced the 32GB iPhone 3GS, and in 2011 the 64GB iPhone 4S hit the market.

As the iPhone 5 release date approaches, and my 64GB iPhone 4S warns me that I don’t have enough storage space to update my apps, I have to wonder if Apple will bump the storage sizes of the iPhone 5 up this fall.

Read: iPhone 5 Release Date Rumors

Running out of Space

No Storage iPhoneIn the past 6 months I’ve used the iPhone as my go to phone, and last night I found out that I didn’t have enough storage space to update the apps already on my phone.

I had just over 5GB of storage space left. In order to download these updates, I had to delete several apps including Modern Combat 3 and Almost DLSR, which was loaded up with video files.

After cleaning house I have 11GB of breathing room, but this has taught me that the iPhone needs at least 5GB of storage free to function.

iPhone Storage use

My iPhone has a lot of photos and videos, which take up about half of the space, with Apps occupying another 16GB. I may be in the minority here, but I know I’m not alone.

Cost of a 128GB iPhone

Cost is the biggest factor that could prevent Apple from introducing a 128GB iPhone 5. According to iSuppli, Flash storage is responsible for most of the cost difference to Apple.

The price of 64GB Flash memory is $76.80, 32GB Flash memory is $38.40 and 16GB Flash memory is $19.20.

Even if advances bring the price of Flash memory down, Apple would need to charge a premium for a 128GB iPhone 5 or eat a larger portion of the cost if it retailed for $399.

Smaller 128GB Flash Chips

This February Samsung, a manufacturer Apple works with for parts of the iPhone, announced the smallest 128GB NAND Flash memory chip. These chips are smaller than a penny, and are already ramping up into high production.

Silver Lining in the Cloud?

The cloud could help alleviate some of the storage woes without the need for a 128GB iPhone 5. PhotoStream currently stores the last 1,000 photos taken, but if it stored more photos and included videos, users could rely on the cloud more.

4g LTE speeds will also help users call up photos and videos on the go, even with 4G LTE data caps.

Apps currently can’t benefit from the cloud, but if Apple would allow OnLive for the iPad and other services that stream games instead of storing the assets and processing locally, the iPhone and iPad could be used to play higher quality games without the need for massive amounts of storage.

Do you need a larger iPhone? Would you pay more than $399 for a 128GB iPhone 5?

Reuters now claims that the next generation iPhone will feature a display that measures 4-inches from corner to corner.

The publication also stated that early production for the device began at LG display, Sharp Corp, and Japan Display, which will allow Apple to launch the device sometime in the fall with full production starting in August.

The Wall Street Journal previously released a report with similar information the publication claimed they received from “people familiar with the situation.”

Customers seem to be tired of the traditional 3.5-inch display that is featured on all of the previous iPhones and WSJ reported that Apple ordered new 4-inch screens from various Asian suppliers in order to being producing the next iPhone in June.

Analyst Shawn Wu also weighed in on the next iPhone, stating that Apple has slowed down production on the iPhone 4S in order to being preparing for the new device.

iMore.com recently reported that the company has not decided on what the exact screen size will be, but that it will not bigger than four inches. It is also saying that the device will feature a smaller dock connector that is currently in development along with the traditional home button.

Contrary to some of the recent rumors, it will not feature a metal backing and the new iPhone will most likely be an LTE device.

iLounge recently reported that the new iPhone would have a longer display with a partially metal back.

Most rumors seem to point to a fall release for the next-generation iPhone. 4G LTE is probably the only confirmable feature for the device at this time. And that is only because the new iPad features that capability.
