iPhone 5: are these ten exciting iFeatures worth waiting for?
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of iPhones, it was no longer the age of Windows Mobile, it was the epoch of iTunes, it was the epoch of increZunity, it was the season of iLife, it was the season of Windows Movie Maker, it was the spring of iOS 6.0, it was the winter of Windows Vista, we had Mac OS X 10.8 before us, we had Windows 8 before us, we were all going direct to the iPhone 5, we were all going direct the to Windows Phone 8 – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of Amazon.com pricing comparison only.
Yes, it’s that time again, the twilight era before a new iPhone arrives, a time when the Samsung Galaxy SIII model reigns supreme while unsure how long before the iPhone 5 replaces it in the Game of Phones…
A time of when Verizon’s Shammo can whammo us with a rendition of a juicy rumours that there may be “a new phone coming out in the fourth quarter”, which could be one reason why “people may be waiting” before leaping in to purchase a new smartphone – at least, from Verizon.
While other sites only seem to be able to come up with only five things to excite you about the iPhone 5, here’s a much beefier ten reasons – unless, of course, you’ve decided to dance along the Fandroid side of the Force.
Indeed, with iPhone 5 rumours seemingly moving faster than a tachyon, this is one ride that sure has been wild, and promises to only get wilder still yet!
So, here we go:
1 – Connectivity. Here, we fully expect to see the long awaited 4G LTE technology make an appearance in the iPhone 5, ready to work on worldwide 4G bands – as well as including the full spread of 3G connectivity from WCDMA to DC-HSDPA+. There’s also the high expectation of a NFC chip to make the iOS 6 and iPhone 5 passbook complete.
2 – Storage. While no-one is expecting Apple to suddenly include a microSD slot, and while Apple finally offered a 64GB version with the iPhone 4S, it may well be time for Apple to up the ante even further by biting the triple digit storage bullet and making a 128GB iPhone 5 available for the first time – although 1GB of RAM is so massively expected that it’s expected to be a given.
3 – Design. From rumours of a 7.99mm thickness to the potential of a liquidmetal or metallic alloy back, with iPhone design is expected to be slimmer and thinner, and while the same width in the palm is expected, the iPhone 5 is supposed to be taller to incorporate that 4-inch screen with 16:9 aspect ratio and Retina class pixel invisibleness.
4 – Display. The display, alluded to above, is said to be the thinnest possible yet, thanks to WSJ’s leaking of “in-cell” technology which eliminates a separate touch layer, thus helping the all-important iPhone display to remain the design feature you look at most.
5 – Camera. A Sony 10 or 12 megapixel multi-lens camera is expected, as is a higher resolution front camera for high definition Facetime calls.
6 – Quad-core processor. While there is talk that Apple will be modifying Samsung’s “Exynos” quad-core processor, Apple holds its own ARM-license and surely does not need Samsung’s help to design and develop its own world-class quad-core A6 chip, along with a multi-core graphics processor to blow every other smartphone out of the water – although we definitely do recommend that you keep your smartphone away from water at all times.
7 – Battery life. Apple famously designs everything about its iDevices, including particular attention to the batteries – and the battery chemistries – that iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches offer. With a bigger screen and beefier processor, Apple is expected to somehow still magically maintain – or even improve – upon the existing battery life that people both wish was longer – and yet take for granted anyway.
8 – Smarter Siri. This one’s coming in iOS 6 for iPhone 4S and the new iPad, and who knows, potentially the next iPod Touch too, but we definitely know its also coming with the iPhone 5 – and will probably have some special iPhone 5-only feature that will make iPhone 4S and new iPad owners Siri-ously jealous.
9 – The fullest Facebook integration ever. Again, this one’s coming in iOS 6, but what special iPhone 5 feature will this integration truly take advantage of? The fastest uploading of photos and videos to Facebook via 4G, or the highest quality photos and videos ever thanks to the iPhone 5’s best ever camera? There’s also Apple’s new maps app in iOS 6, which is obviously coming to the iPhone 5, too.
10 – An early release date? The massively rumoured August 7 launch or simply announcement date is little over two weeks away, but if that day comes and goes with no iAnnouncement in sight the world will wait through the end of August, through to the end of September, and then will get even more agitated as October arrives with no sign of the iPhone 5 being alive. After all – August isn’t in the fourth quarter as Verizon’s Shammo stated, so…
Whenever the iLaunch occures, hopes are nevertheless high that Apple will iDeliver long before October rolls around, and may well show off new iPod Touch models or even new 13-inch Retina-class MacBook Pro models, too.
That’s it for now, but the iAction continues with next week’s expected introduction of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, which blends more of iOS into Mac OS X than ever before, and while a new OS cannot replace the excitement for a new iPhone, it’ll certainly be a great way to enhance your Mac in preparation for the nearly-here-but-still-not-yet iPhone 5!

iPhone 5 Release Date: Foxconn Hiring Thousands as Fall Debut Nears

Workers walk out of the entrance to a Foxconn factory in Chengdu, Sichuan province July 4, 2012(Photo: Reuters)
The rain gods may have been unkind, but the balmy weather and heavy downpour did nothing to dampen the spirits of thousands of job-seeking hopefuls who’d queued outside Apple manufacturing partner Foxconn’s Chengdu and Zhengzhou factories in China. The prospective employees had lined up for “summer jobs”, fuelling speculation that the recruitment is being done to boost the rumored iPad Mini and iPhone 5 productions, ahead of their fall debuts.
According to a report by Chinese website MIC Gadget, Foxconn has introduced temporary positions to ramp-up production of the Apple’s new iOS devices. Details on the number of openings is not available. However, the positions are said to be filling up rapidly. The job profile dictates that candidates must have good eyesight and would need to submit a registration fee of 150 Chinese Yuan ($24) – which is a lot of money – in order to apply.

With dual launches in the anvil, the move makes perfect business sense and with a high market demand likely prior to the iPad Mini and iPhone 5 releases, large scale hiring would give a massive fillip to the production process and help avoid possible delays and device shortages. Both the 7.85-inch iPad Mini and the 4-inch iPhone 5 are slated for an October release. Apple, though, is yet to confirm any of the circulating rumors.
Speculation is rife that, currently, small scale production of the iPhone 5 is already underway at the Zhengzhou. MacTrast cited ’sources’ who claimed that only five units of the new handset were produced during a recent night shift, with more than 100 workers on the employee roster. According to the report, the yet-to-be released iPhone is reportedly in the “trial production stage.”
The popularity of Apple and perhaps the opportunity to get a glimpse of its tech wonders is drawing job seekers in despite the terrible working conditions at Foxconn.
With the anticipated fall debut date of the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini nearing, Apple continues to hop on-and-off the rumor carousel. Its rendezvous with the grapevine endures.

iPhone 5 Release Date: Apple Launched iPad in China,
On Friday, Apple new iPad was released in stores after the announcement came earlier this month. Unfortunately, a frenzied public did not rush into Apple stores. In fact, Huffington Post reported “The 30 customers in line when the store opened were outnumbered by the reporters watching them.”
The result was unexpected, usually Apple’s products especially one as popular as the iPad is expected to create a rage and draw in huge numbers of customers. Business analysts and techies remain curious if the poor opening of the iPad will harbinger poor sales of the product overall.

The delayed released of Apple’s very popular product in its second largest market was due to the company’s recent lawsuit with Chinese company Proview International Holdings Ltd. over patent issues to which Apple wound up paying $3 billion. In light of the lawsuit, Proview had the iPads removed from the market; as a result apple lost significant sales in the Chinese market.
Apple announced that the third edition tablet or as Apple calls it the “new iPad” will be released in China on July 20th ranging from the same price as is in the U.S. market ($499-$829). The tablet will be sold in black and white. Reservations for the awaited tablet will begin on July 19th Thursday and can be done through the internet or special authorized retailers. On Monday, Apple paid Chinese company Proview $60 million in a trademark dispute.
According to the dispute with Proview, which was settled earlier this month, the Chinese company filed a suit against Apple over the name ‘iPad’ to which it had bought the rights in 2000. Apple bought the worldwide rights to the name in 2009 and paid Proviews’ affiliate company $55,000 for its purchase. Proview claimed that the affiliate had no authority to sell the name.
After a protracted tussle the two finally settled the dispute with Apple paying the almost bankrupt firm $60 million. The case was settled on the urging of Guangdong High People’s Court, which released a statement confirming the settlement, “The iPad dispute resolution is ended,” the Guangdong High People’s Court said in a statement…Apple Inc. has transferred $60m to the account of the Guangdong High Court as requested in the mediation letter,” as reported by BBC News.
With a humdrum of rumors that Apple is moving the release date of the iPhone 5 to August instead of November in light of the highly successful sales of Samsung’s Galaxy. And the persistent tension in the smartphone world that has been occupied in a humdrum of its own, with Samsung and Apple involved in a patent tussle, Amazon hinting to launch a smartphone of its own. Apple announced that it will be releasing its new iPad to China markets as soon as July 20th.

ATT, Inc. (NYSE:T) and Verizon (NYSE:VZ) stock both traded nearly in lockstep during the past year with ATT seeing a 19.5 percent increase and Verizon having a 22 percent increase. However, ATT may have an edge going forward. Its dividend is predicted to keep growing. Also, earlier in the year, the company stated that it would spend $9 billion to repurchase almost 5 percent of its outstanding shares, but Verizon has not been actively repurchasing stock. Thursday, Verizon Wireless claimed the addition of 1.2 million subscribers during Q2, bringing it to 94.2 million, and ATT watched its wireless base grow to 103.9 million. Tablet sale growth will only raise the customers’ desire for data. Although the stock will probably not skyrocketed, Barron’s argues that investors seeking a defensive dividend should consider ATT. The shares traded down $0.20 (0.56%) recently at $35.28.

iPhone 5: Verizon Hints Fall Debut of World’s First Phone with In-cell Display

iPhone 5 concept design by Nak Studio(Photo: Nak Studio | Mobile Apps)
Rumors that Apple will be integrating in-cell technology in its next-generation iPhone first surfaced back in April via Digitimes. Now, however, such rumors have taken a significant boost after the well-respected Wall Street Journal reported the same thing, citing “people familiar with the matter.” What’s more, Verizon is hinting a fall debut of the world’s first smartphone with the in-cell technology.
According to the Journal, the iPhone 5 is currently being manufactured by Asian component makers, and will indeed use in-cell technology to make the smartphone’s display thinner, in an effort to better compete with Samsung and other rivals.
Like Us on Facebook :
Sources told the WSJ that Japanese liquid-crystal-display makers Sharp Corp. and Japan Display Inc., which combines three Japanese electronics makers’ display units into one single company, together with South Korea’s LG Display Co., are currently mass producing panels for the next-generation iPhone using so-called in-cell technology.
How It Works
This new technology integrates touch sensors into the LCD, eliminating the need for a separate touch layer, usually about half-a-millimeter thick. Eliminating this layer makes the entire display thinner, and also improves the quality of the images being displayed, DisplaySearch analyst Hiroshi Hayase told the Journal. According to Apple’s official Web site, the current iPhone 4S is 9.3 millimeters thick.
The new technology would not only help Apple create thinner devices, but it would also simplify the supply chain, as well as help reduce costs by eliminating the need to buy touch panels and LCD panels from different suppliers. Moreover, numerous reports indicate the new iPhone will sport a larger display than the current iPhones’ 3.5-inch screens. A larger size would also mean an increase in weight, but a thinner screen could help offset that increase.
A thinner screen in the next-generation iPhone could make the whole handset slimmer, or leave extra real estate for other components such as batteries. In-cell touch displays, however, are more difficult to manufacture than conventional LCD screens. According to the Journal’s sources, the manufacturing process is more challenging and time-consuming for LCD makers as they strive to achieve high yield rates. The new iPhone is expected sometime in the fall, but nothing is official yet.
The LCD industry has been working on in-cell touch technology for several years now, and Apple’s iPhone provides the perfect environment for LCD panel makers such as Sharp, Japan Display and LG Display to demonstrate their latest progress and prove that LCD screens can continue to evolve and compete with OLED displays. Meanwhile, the three components manufacturers have also been developing OLED displays.
On the other hand, the adoption of in-cell technology will affect manufacturers of the conventional touch panels currently found in many smartphone displays. According to the Journal’s sources, Taiwan’s Wintek Corp. and TPK Holding Co., which supplied the touch-panel layer for the iPhone 4S screen, did not get orders for the next-generation iPhone.
Verizon Hints Fall Debut
Meanwhile, Verizon is hinting that 2012′s most anticipated smartphone could debut in the fourth quarter.
During the company’s quarterly conference call, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo said, “There is always that Rumour Mill out there with a new phone coming out in the fourth quarter. And so people may be waiting” when asked by an analyst why Verizon’s customers were holding back from upgrading their handsets. It’s a vague reference to the iPhone, no doubt, but we would be surprised if Shammo had any other device in his mind or was alluding to any other smartphone rumor.

iPhone 5 vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2 in the rumors
JULY 20, 2012, 3:31 P.M. New York local time — Reports reveal that Samsung’s unannounced Galaxy Note 2 tab-phone will include a quad-core CPU and a 720p display. Can it compete with the iPhone 5?
5.3-inch or 5.5-inch with 720p display and a slightly faster processor? If accurate, then the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will be 1.5-inch bigger than the iPhone 5′s rumored 4-inch screen.
Reports today say that Samsung is already testing the “Galaxy Note 2″ after benchmarks for the handset from GLBenchmark appeared online. According to Phone Arena, a certain Samsung GT-N7100 phone appeared in the popular benchmark site with 1.6Ghz quad-core processor a relatively faster CPU compared to Samsung Galaxy S3′s quad-core Exynos 4 system on a chip. The post also revealed that the phone will boast an HD 1280 x 720p touch screen display resolution.
Aside from the quad-core processor, larger display and new operating system, speculation has been mounting as to what materials would be included in the phone’s outer shell, more premium materials? Or still plastic? Also new in the Galaxy Note 2 rumors is the possible out of the box operating system. Phone Arena’s report claims that the Note 2 will include the months-old but still popular 2011 Android Ice Cream Sandwich platform. For starters, the latest version of Android is “Jelly Bean,” the out of the box mobile operating system of Google’s new Nexus 7 tablet computer.
Slashgear reports that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will hit the IFA stage in Europe on August 30. The phone’s rumored launch indirectly suggests that it will compete with Apple’s next smartphone, the iPhone 5, which will reportedly arrive before the end of October according to channel checks of numerous analysts.
Speaking of analysts, Market Watch reports that the iPhone 5 will slow down sales of other mobile devices and their components in the time frame leading up to its release date — including Apple and its older iPhones.
Qualcomm, maker of smartphones chipset including the processors of Samsung’s US-based Galaxy S3 (Snapdragon S4) and Galaxy Note, said that the September quarter is widely expected to post lower revenue whilst adding that the “December quarter” will be strong. The report goes on to say that Qualcomm’s share is rising. Another analyst, James Faucette of Pacific Crest, said that Qualcomm could sell 40 million chipset units for the iPhone 5 alone.

Could the iPhone 5 push Li-Ion batteries to their limit?
As our portable electronic devices become more powerful, the demands they place on the power packs that supply them with energy increases. As Apple continues to to pack more and more technology into smaller and smaller smartphones, the battery is rapidly becoming the feature that will limit what the rumored, next-generation iPhone 5 is capable of doing.
Noam Kedem, VP of marketing for Leyden Energy, a California-based company that makes batteries for a variety of applications, including consumer electronics and electric vehicles, believes that the iPhone 5 will have a much larger battery than any of its predecessors, but that this might not be enough to keep the device’s runtime at the same level as that of the current generation hardware.
“The iPhone 5 battery is going to have to be notably bigger than its predecessor,” writes Kedem. “Even with the increase in battery’s X and Y dimensions made possible by a larger screen, the result could still be shorter battery life—in terms of run-time per charge, cycle life and calendar life”.
The problem, in a nutshell, is that since Li-Ion batteries first became commercially available back in 1991, transistor density in the devices they power has increased by a staggering one thousand fold, but during that time battery energy density has only increased three fold.

The iPad 3 highlights just what a problem battery technology has become for Apple. This device has a Li-Ion power pack that is 70 percent bigger than that of the iPad 2, yet still offers a shorter runtime. If you want to extend the battery life, you’re going to have to accept some trade-offs in terms of what the device can do.
It’s clear that Apple is close to hitting a wall as to how much it can squeeze out of current battery technology.
Many — myself included — criticized Apple for fitting non-replaceable batteries into the iPhone and iPad. This does give Apple the chance to pack more battery into a device while keeping the size down to a minimum. It removes the need for the battery to have a case and connectors. The modern battery inside a consumer electronics device is little more than a bag of chemicals with a few wires coming out of it. By eliminating the need for the battery to have a hard case, connectors and the like, Apple has been able to shrink down the overall size of the battery, thus get more bang for the buck.
But even this trick only goes so far.
Kedem believes that with the iPhone 5, Apple will have to get even more creative with how it packs the electronics inside the iPhone around the battery, in order to be able to maximize space for the power pack.
On a more positive note, as electronics get smaller and smaller with each generation of iPhone, this leaves more room inside the device to be filled by the battery.
Another enemy of the battery is heat. Not just heat generated by the device when in use, but he heat produced when the device is charged.
“The higher power requirements of the new features in the iPhone 5 will mean faster discharge,” writes Kedem. “Consumer impatience requires making charging happen as fast as possible, but the more powerful battery needed in the iPhone 5 will naturally take more time to charge when using the same charger as the earlier iPhones”.
If you want a faster charge time, that means a more powerful charger. And a more powerful charger means more heat being produced. “Trying to reduce charge times with a more powerful charger would likely generate even more heat and further shorten battery life,” warns Kedam.
Heat is such a problem with batteries that the iPad 3′s Li-Ion cells contain heat spreaders to help dissipate this wasted energy and prolong battery life.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Apple balances all these factors in the iPhone 5. Will the company sacrifice features for battery life? Will battery life take a hit? Will Apple give in and make a bigger iPhone? Or does Apple still have a few tricks up its sleeve for getting a little more out of the aging Li-Ion technology.
We’ll have to wait and see.
