Bits & Bytes: Apple iPhone 5 port change will render older accessories obsolete
It’s looking like a design change in the iPhone 5 might cause some people some real frustration.
Oh sure, in the run-up to the inevitable release the tech world flips out over things like “the screen might be 3 percent bigger!” or “Siri can now understand people with a Belgian accent!”
Yet when these features actually come out, life will continue pretty much like normal.
Although the news that the smartphone will have a new 19-pin port instead of the familiar 30-pin port may sound tremendously boring – it’s just a slightly differently shaped thing to stick in your phone when you want to charge or swap data – it has the consequence of making all the past iPhone and iPod accessories completely incompatible.
And there are a lot of accessories. Beceause the iPhone is the best-selling single model of phone by far and the plug is shared by the iPod, plenty of companies have made speaker systems, battery packs, car chargers, docks and more over the years.
I’ve got two speaker systems and a battery pack that I won’t be able to use anymore when I upgrade to the 5. They’re great pieces of equipment, but I may as well chuck them in the recycling bin once the new phone arrives.
It’s annoying. It’s expensive. And it’s a part of technological advancement we’ve managed to avoid for quite a while.
Apple unveiled the 30-pin port back in 2003 with the third-generation iPod. It worked great for transferring music back and forth from a computer to the device, so the company stuck with it when the data-intensive smartphones showed up.
It’s a technology that’s nearly a decade old and might be due for replacement. The new dock just might be better. At the very least it’s smaller and might allow Apple to make some interesting design changes for the iPhone 5.
Then again, every other phone maker has finally abandoned all those odd-looking and incompatible power jacks and data ports in favor of using mini-USB ports. They seem to work fine, and the cords are very easy to find and replace.
Why is Apple different? Because it can be.
Apple’s way of thinking differently resulted in the iPhone and kicked off the whole smartphone revolution in the first place. Of course, its different dongles also tend to be sold for a premium, and the company helps encourage people to stick with Apple products.
Longtime Apple fans are used to having to adapt to the company’s whims. Sure, there are a lot more Apple users now that the iPhone is here, but annoying as the port switch is, I doubt that it will have much of an effect on sales of the new phone.
App of the week: Amazing Alex (iOS, Android)
After riding the monster success of Angry Birds for a couple of years, Rovio’s finally released a bird-free game. The titular Alex is apparently a descendant of Rube Goldberg, as he tries to do simple tasks like land balls in baskets, pop balloons and knock objects over in the most complicated way possible.
To do that, you’ll have to position various objects in just the right way so that Alex can accomplish these tasks when you turn the physics on and let things move. It’s simple and fun, but not nearly as weirdly charming or addictive as Angry Birds.
Rovio, 99 cents

BBC’s app for news from London Olympics pulled from iOS app store
I wrote last week that, out of all the Olympics news apps out there, my favorite was the one put out by the BBC. Unfortunately it looks like the app has been pulled from the iOS app store. My copy of the app still seems to work, but that doesn’t help anyone who hasn’t already downloaded it.
I haven’t been able to find a reason why it’s been pulled, though my guess is that NBC complained because they have the U.S. broadcast rights to the Olympics.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that NBC’s app is, as of a few days ago, still a stuttering mess that refused to load videos reliably for me.

iPhone 5 Features – What to Expect on Launch Day
There’s been a lot of rumors and hearsay, but there is growing consensus on the iPhone 5 features we’re most likely to see when Apple’s sixth generation iPhone is announced.
iPhone 5 Features Summary
All rumors thus far have pointed towards a bigger screen – probably 4-inches, with a retina display and in-cell technology. According to design documents, The overall width of the iPhone will remain unchanged however, with the increase in screen size being achieved by altering the ‘tallness’ of the iPhone 5 alone.
Despite the larger screen, the iPhone 5 is expected to feature improved battery life due to the use of more advanced display technology that reduces overall power consumption as well as the weight and thickness of the device.
The iPhone 5 will undoubtedly feature a new processor, with most observers agreeing that we’re likely to see an iteration of the A6 quad core processor.
Design-wise, the FaceTime camera has received a bump in resolution from VGA to HD and has been repositioned from the side of the front panel to a more central position directly above the speaker. The headphone jack too, has been relocated, from its traditional position on the top of the iPhone to the bottom.
The rear-facing camera is also expected to receive an upgrade, with improved optics and an increase in megapixels.
The standard dock which has been a feature on every Apple mobile product from the iPod to the iPhone and iPad, looks to be receiving a complete overhaul and replacement with a new 19-pin Mini Dock which is likely an effort to make the iPhone 5 micro-USB compliant.
While unconfirmed, the iPhone 5 features that remain more speculative include the inclusion of NFC (near-field communications) for wireless payments and the switch from micro-SIM cards to a nano-SIM.

iPhone 5 Release Date, iPad Mini Launch, And A New iPod Touch (Finally …
Two Blogs Claim iPhone 5 Will Be Released On September 21
Are you less than two months away from holding the new iPhone 5 in your own hands?
Only Apple execs, and perhaps their spouses and/or lovers, know for sure, but a href=”http://www.bgr.com/2012/07/26/iphone-5-release-date-rumor-september-21st/” target=”_hplink”two separate blogs this week reported/a that they had discovered the next iPhone’s official release date. One of the blogs (App4Phone) is written in French, and the other (PhoneArena) is written in English; and though the two can’t agree on a common language, they did come together on one thing: The iPhone 5 will be released on September 21.
That’s what they’ve heard, anyway. PhoneArena a href=”http://www.phonearena.com/news/iPhone-5-release-date-set-to-be-September-21_id32598″ target=”_hplink”has claimed that September 21st/a is the day once before, and a href=”http://www.phonearena.com/news/More-rumors-confirm-September-21-to-be-iPhone-5-release-date_id32684″ target=”_hplink”now they’re confirming that date/a. The first time PhoneArena heard this rumor, their source was an accessory maker; this time, the source is “an employee working for a large U.S. retailer.” (Because it has been in the news so often this week, I can only assume that the “large U.S. retailer” in question is, indeed, Chick-Fil-A).
The Francophones at App4Phone, meanwhile, a href=”http://app4phone.fr/article-53775/exclu-app4phone-date-de-sortie-et-informations-sur-liphone-5″ target=”_hplink”also have/a an “exclu,” a href=”http://app4phone.fr/article-53775/exclu-app4phone-date-de-sortie-et-informations-sur-liphone-5″ target=”_hplink”reporting that/a the “date de sortie” is September 21, while also corroborating earlier rumors that the dock connector will be smaller (the reputable Reuters confirmed that one this week, too), that the headphone jack will be “déplacée” to the bottom of the phone, and that the phone itself will be taller to accomodate a larger, 4.0-inch “écran.” That last bit either means that the next iPhone will have a 4.0-inch screen, or that it will ship with a new, innovative 4-inch long “E-Crayon” stylus. I don’t know, I don’t speak French.
(Bonus France joke: As a footnote, App4Phone is also reporting that, in France, the iPhone 5 will not be called the “iPhone 5″ but will rather be called “a href=”http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLtwFugudZE” target=”_hplink”iPhone 5 with Cheese/a.” Either that, or “Jacques.”)
Could September 21 truly be the end to almost two years of iPhone 5 rumors? We’ve been hearing more and more that September, not October, will be the release month, so if it’s not emexactly/em September 21, that date could at least be close. Now we have even more evidence that September will indeed be the month. If you come with me to the next slide in this merry slideshow, you can learn why.

Apple iPhone 5 Leaked?

Is this the new Apple iPhone 5? While there’s been various photos and rumors of the next iPhone from Apple, here’s a more complete look at an assembled iPhone 5, courtesy of iLab. The new photos give a clear look at what a black, fully-assembled next-generation iPhone might look like when it ships to customers this fall. As per the rumors, Apple will utilize the in-cell touch technology that will make the iPhone 5 thinner as compared to other smartphones since the iPhone 5 is in direct competition with Samsung Galaxy S3, which boasts a 4.8 inch super AMOLED display. iPhone 5 is expected to be just 7.6mm thick, a full millimeter less than the Samsung Galaxy S3, which is 8.6mm thick. It is also a pretty safe bet to assume that the iPhone 5 will come with at least a 4-inch display to stand equally with S3.

Alleged iPhone 5 Parts Assembled: Is This the New iPhone?
View Profile- AIM

It’s getting to be the time of year when new iPhone rumors are flying with abandon, and grains of salt are needed by the ton. But when industrious repair shop iLab takes a mess of purported new iPhone parts and assembles them into one very convincing device, it’s worth paying attention.
Is this what Apple’s new iPhone will look like when it’s finally released this fall? Impossible to say. But it sure lines up with everything else we’ve heard. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that it looks absolutely gorgeous.
The pics were unearthed by 9to5Mac, which points out that many of these parts have been floating around separately for several months now. But this particular Voltron seems to be the most complete look we’ve seen, and matches up exactly with a rumored iPhone 5 video that popped up recently from a different Apple parts supplier.
All the rumored changes are present here: the stretched out display, the unibody design, the two-tone color scheme, the 19-pin connector. The back panel’s missing much of the signage that you’d find on an iPhone, but that would make sense if this were just a reference part. And given that there’s a decent chance that at least one iPhone has already been smuggled out of Foxconn, it follows logically that parts would be making the rounds as well.

More exterior shots and components can be found over at iLab. Again, this may or may not turn out to be what Apple’s next iPhone looks like; we won’t know for sure until the fall. But that doesn’t mean we can’t hope just a little that it ends up this appealing. [iLab via 9to5Mac]

iPhone 5 release date hints dropped by Apple CEO Tim Cook
Apple may have just dropped a tiny bit of information on the release date of the new iPhone 5.
Much to the chagrin of the Mac faithful, CEO Tim Cook and the rest of the Apple “tree” have remained characteristically hush-hush on the next iteration of the device, unofficially christened the “iPhone 5” by gadget watchers.
APPLE SHARES FALL 6 PERCENT AFTER HOURS ON WEAK EARNINGS REPORT
But earlier this week, a Barclays analyst asked Cook a question about margins that seemed benign, on its face.
APPLE REPORTEDLY TO LAUNCH IPHONE 5 AT EARLY OCTOBER EVENT
“How much do you expect to get back in the December quarter?” the analyst asked, according to CNET.
The analyst was presumably referring to the vast increase in sales Apple could expect to rake in, if it released a new device – such as the iPhone 5 – this fall.
But that’s not all the inquirer wanted to know.
“Do you have any idea with the iPhone, how much rumors and speculations hurt sales?” the analyst asked in reference to Apple’s recent – and relatively rare – lackluster sales report.
This quarter sales rose to $35 billion, with $9.32 profits per share. On average, however, analysts were expecting $37.2 billion in sales and $10.36 per share, according to Forbes.
These numbers were theoretically reduced, in part, by consumers’ reluctance to buy iPhones now, if a new model is slated to debut in the fall.
Cook answered the analyst with several hints… sort of.
“It’s difficult to sort out,” he said. “I am fairly convinced that there’s an incredible anticipation out there for a future product. And as you would expect, given what we would be able to deliver in the past… it’s a reasonable amount.”
It’s a reasonable amount of cloudy, is what his answer is. But Cook’s statement is still not a flat-out denial that this “future product” could very well be a new iPhone 5 released in the December quarter.
And Cook’s referral to “the past” could be an indication that the company intends to continue with its established model of releasing a new phone each year. Last year, of course, Apple released the iPhone 4S in the fall.
Given the CEO’s comments, techies seem fairly certain the phone will drop in the near future, especially following a Monday Reuters story, which reported that the iPhone 5 will come with a new, smaller dock connecter.
Instead of the current 30-pin port that has been used for nearly a decade, a 19-pin connector at the bottom of the device will “make room for the earphone moving to the bottom”, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.
As such, the hypothetical new phone’s dock would not be compatible with chargers and devices built for older phones, presenting quite an annoyance for consumers, especially those with expensive speaker docks ready for older ports.
But analysts say business is business.
“It represents an opportunity for accessory vendors,” Pete Cunningham, a London-based analyst at technology research firm Canalys, told the newswire. “The iPhone connector has been a standard for a long time now and I would expect the same to be true for a new connector, should Apple change it, as expected.”
Some Chinese vendors have even gone so far as to begin releasing iPhone 5 cases with a “guarantee” that the size will be right, Reuters reported.
As for Apple’s leading man, the successor to Steve Jobs maintains he’s happy about product whispers.
“I am glad people want the next thing, I’m superhappy [sic] about that,” he said. “I’m not going to put any energy into getting people to stop speculating.”
