VZ, T, S: Nomura Adjusts Numbers for iPhone 5 Debut

Nomura Equity Research‘s telecom analyst Mike McCormack this morning reiterated Neutral ratings on Verizon Communications (VZ) and Sprint-Nextel (S), and a Buy rating on shares of ATT (T), writing that they will see slightly less profit this quarter because of the introduction of Apple‘s (AAPL) next iPhone.

McCormack originally modeled a Q4 introduction of the next iPhone. Surrendering to persistent rumors of a late-September debut for the product, McCormack writes, “Broadly speaking, this shifts a significant cost burden into 3Q, which we estimate could correspond to 5mn iPhone sales across the industry.”

McCormack adjusted his iPhone unit sales estimates for the three carriers this quarter to 11.6 million units from a prior 6.6 million units, and cut his Q4 estimate from 13.3 million to 10.5 million. While he expects “pent up demand from customers that have not upgraded, which we are seeing in lower gross additions and churn from the carriers,” he also thinks that the tightening of upgrade policies of late, leading to less dilution from subsidies:

Since the iPhone 4S launch in 4Q11, carriers have made upgrade policies more restrictive, limiting the cost and upgrade eligibility for the iPhone 5. These moves, including delaying upgrade eligibility to 22 months and instituting a higher activation fee, should result in fewer total upgrades and a lower per subscriber net subsidy expense than seen in prior launches.

For this quarter, McCormack raised the estimate for ATT’s total revenue slightly, while cutting EPS by 10 cents to 60 cents a share. For Verizon, he also adds a little to the top line, while cutting the EPS estimate to 60 cents from 69 cents for the quarter. For Sprint, he sees revenue of $8.88 billion, up from a prior $8.66 billion estimate, and a deeper net loss per share of 38 cents versus the 27 cents he previously projected.

Sprint shares today are up 6 cents, or 1%, at $5.21, Verizon stock is down 4 cents at $44.08, and ATT shares are down 14 cents at $37.10.

Iphone 5, iPad Mini’s dock connector pics published online

In one of the most anticipated launch of Apple’s new offerings probably next month, the first pictures showing new mini connector for upcoming iPad Mini and iPhone 5 have been published online, said a report.

Shared by French tech website nowhereelse.fr, the photograph shows two components, one of which is stated to be similar to another leaked picture of a part of the new iPhone.

Besides the new dock connector, the part also seems to take in the headphone jack and the home button connector for the hotly awaited devices, said another report.

According to the Daily Mail, one detail that has troubled Apple observers is that the headphone jack on the pictured component is located directly next to the dock connector.

Macrumours.com has reportedly pointed out that so far case leaks, design drawings and physical mockups of Apple’s forthcoming devices have all suggested the headphone jack on the iPad Mini will by found along the top edge, as it is on the full-size iPad.

The paper further reported that there was a public outcry after it emerged that the next iPhone would get a new docking port connector.

Earlier a blog posted on iMore a few days ago has stated that Apple will start taking US pre-orders for its smartphone the day it will launch new iPhone.

It was also written that buyers in the international market will be able to book the device in the first week of the following month, most probably from October 5.

Although the new iPhone release date remains unconfirmed, information has been leaked about Apple’s plan to hold a special event on September 12 to preview the new gadget ahead of the launch date expected around September 20, said the report on examiner.com.

The new device will experience a design refresh. The glass on that new iPhone is also expected to be a new in-house technology developed by Apple. The touchscreen could be stronger and provide an even-better touchscreen user experience.

The other new features are: LTE 4G cellular service, a higher-resolution camera on the front and back of the iPhone and a quad-core A6 processor.

iPhone 5 rumor rollup for week ending Aug. 17

For the iOSphere, reading SEC documents is the modern equivalent of the ancient art of haruspicy, reading animal entrails, to learn the future of the Next iPhone. Much is revealed to the trained eye.

And what’s revealed this time is that iPhone 5 will have a cool fingerprint sensor at the heart of a digital mobile wallet
with NFC-enabled payments. And that’s probably just to start with.

MORE: What the iPhone 5 may very well look like

Also this week, Korean confirmation of LTE, the promise of pre-orders on the same day as The Revelation itself, learning the
difference between a hoax rumor and a, you know, real rumor, and photos of the iPhone 5 battery.

You read it here second.

__________

“An estimate would be that 90% [of readers who commented] regarded the screw [rumor] as a fact and based all the further opinion
on that, only 10% were critical [as] to [its] accuracy.”
    – Lukasz Lindell, of the Swedish Day4 blog (which created a deliberately false rumor, complete with 3D rendering, of
an asymmetric screw developed by Apple for iPhone 5), on what makes the iOSphere go ’round.

__________

iPhone 5 will have AuthenTec’s fingerprint sensor technology

And that will mean, it will also have an NFC-based “mobile wallet” capability.

This all based on the interpretations being applied to the latest SEC filing by AuthenTec (you can check out our full coverage of this story). The company makes a variety of smart sensors, identity management and embedded security products, including fingerprint sensors used in PCs and laptops. On July 27 AuthenTec announced it was being acquired by Apple for $356 million, Apple’s biggest ever.

This month, AuthenTec filed required paperwork with the SEC, revealing new details of its talks with Apple. TheNextWeb’s Matt
Brian read the filing and concludes that Apple is likely to incorporate into iPhone 5 (and the “iPad Mini” if there is one) the company’s recently announced 2D fingerprint sensor, and associated software, for NFC-equipped
smartphones and tablets.

“Will we see fingerprint technology in the new iPhone (or iPad)?” Brian asks. “It seems almost certain. AuthenTec specializes
in a number of security products and software that theoretically could have made their way into Apple’s production line or
code branches. Details are scarce but its desire to use the technology and see it developed quickly leads us to speculate
that we could see it in just a matter of weeks.”

MacDailyNews at once began the echo chamber amplification that exemplifies Apple rumoring, by adding in its headline a detail
that Brian never mentioned: “Apple’s iPhone 5 to include fingerprint sensor in Home button?“

Essentially, the SEC document contains AuthenTec’s account of its talks with Apple, which began in late 2011 when AuthenTec
began trying to interest consumer electronics companies in a new technology still in development — a 2D fingerprint sensor
and associated software specifically for NFC-equipped mobile devices. It was formally announced in May 2012.

Brian interprets those details, probably accurately, as showing that Apple was determined very early on to get its hands on
the mobile fingerprint technology. The company repeatedly insisted that AuthenTec continue development especially to adapt
the sensor to Apple’s specific requirements.

But Brian falls victim to the “what else could it be” mindset that permeates Apple rumoring. The negotiation details in the
SEC filing, to Brian, are evidence of Apple’s urgency. “If AuthenTec was developing a technology for Apple’s new products,
would the deal need to have been completed “quickly” if it wasn’t going to be used in devices launching later this year (or
mere months after negotiations began)?” Brian asks. What else could it be?

Brian clearly believes that Apple’s desire to quickly consummate the deal reveals the AuthenTec fingerprint sensor will be
included in the new iPhone and other Apple products expected to be announced this fall.

The Rollup is not convinced. You can read why in the full story about this matter here

iPhone 5 will have LTE because the Koreans are asking Apple for it

The Korea Times published, in English, a story headlined “SKT, KT in talks with Apple for LTE service,” which explained fairly straightforwardly that the leading Korean mobile carriers are trying to convince Apple to support
their LTE networks in the next iPhone.

The Korea Times cited “officials from the companies,” but there’s little information directly associated to an official. Most of the details
apparently come from “one high-ranked industry source who is familiar with the situation.”

The Consensus Rumor is that Apple boyhowdy fer shur will have LTE radios in iPhone 5, because if it doesn’t, it will be a
planetary disaster on a scale not seen since the Chicxulub asteroid collision 65 million years ago. If Apple does introduce LTE, that would mean the Koreans are trying to get support for their specific
LTE networks, which would require different radios.

In any case, the iOSphere quickly amplified the implications. SlashGear’s headline: “iPhone 5 LTE confirmed by Korean mobile carriers.”

Chris Burn wrote: “This week it appears that the Korean mobile data carrier KT may have spilled the beans a bit early as they’ve
been quoted speaking about the next-generation iPhone by the Korea Times. … This of course means Korea’s 4G LTE frequencies
will be in play — and that it’s likely the USA will be connected with this data speed as well.”

CNET’s Lance Whitney was more circumspect, saying only that The Korea Times story was “yet another potential sign” of LTE support in iPhone 5.

“If Apple’s upcoming iPhone again fails to support LTE bandwidths, then this would be a very disappointing scenario as LTE
is everywhere in Korea,” said a high-ranking SK Telecom executive, quoted in the original Korea Times story.

iPhone 5 pre-orders start on the day of announcement, Sept. 12

When Apple announces iPhone 5 on Sept. 12, would-be buyers will be able to place “pre-orders” for it that same day, according to iMore’s Rene Ritchie, who cites “sources that have provided iMore with accurate iPhone related launch dates in the past.”

iPhone 5 release date: Apple (AAPL) iPhone 5 may get stiff competition from …

The new Nokia Lumia Windows 8 phone may be the phone to beat when Apple releases its iPhone 5, according to Examiner.com .

According to the report, a 4.3-inch Windows 8 Lumia Smartphone, at a similar price as the iPhone, is in the pipeline from Nokia.

But anticipation for the iPhone 5 may be reducing cell phone sales worldwide.

The upcoming rumored iPhone 5 September release and the bad economy are apparently causing people to hold off on buying new phones, Examiner.com reports.

Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner said: “The challenging economic environment and users postponing upgrades to take advantage of high-profile device launches”

Pre-sales for the iPhone 5 will begin Sept. 12, the same day Apple is expected to announce the new device, according to an latimes.com report.

According to the new report, there will hardly be any gap between the iPhone 5′s announcement and its start of pre-orders.

With the anticipated Apple announcement of the next iPhone, retailers are slashing prices on previous models.

Target’s retail price for the iPhone 4S was starting at $150 for the 16GB model with two-year contracts on Verizon, ATT or Sprint, according to PC World Magazine. However, the offer did not appear to be available on Target’s website Monday afternoon.

Sprint was the first to slash the price of the 4S by $50 last week. The carrier priced the 4S model at $150 with a new, two-year contract. Sprint also waived its activation fee for online purchases.

Best Buy began pricing the iPhone 4, 8GB model at $50 with a new contract just a few days earlier. The offer still stood on its website Monday afternoon.

Apple was reportedly quietly matching the $150 price at is retail stores, but customers have to ask for the discount because it was not openly advertised, according to PC World Magazine .

Heavy speculation about the next-generation iPhone has the smartphone world abuzz. Apple has an event planned for the week of September 10.

A September debut would be ahead of Apple’s previous release schedule of once per year, except for the 4S, which was not released until 16 months after the iPhone 4.

Details of the expected new phone, including its name, have not been released. Several reports state the new phone will have a slightly larger screen and a smaller dock connector.

iPhone 5 to Be ‘Biggest Handset Launch in History’: Jefferies

The launch of the Apple iPhone 5 “will be the biggest handset launch in history,” Jefferies analyst Peter Misek wrote in an Aug. 17 research note. The note also offered color on the state of a rumored iPad Mini and Apple iTV.

Jefferies has determined that 170 million global smartphone subscribers will be coming out of contracts in the second half of 2012, and 450 million more will be contract-free in 2013. Further, the firm believes that approximately 30 million iPhone subscribers will complete their contracts in the second half of 2012 and approximately 85 million will do the same in 2013.

“We therefore see significant and very fertile ground for the iPhone 5’s success,” wrote Mistek.

Apple’s iPhone is due for a refresh—the iPhone 4S debuted in October 2011—and Apple is widely expected to introduce a new smartphone at a Sept. 12 event. Consumer anticipation for the device was partially blamed for a quarter-to-quarter drop in iPhone sales at Verizon Wireless and ATT during the second quarter, as well as Apple earnings that failed to meet Wall Street expectations—an occurrence that has happened only twice in 39 quarters.

Jefferies expects Apple to have approximately 15 million iPhone 5 handsets in inventory by mid-September, and for the Sept. 12 event to include “an announcement of the iPhone 5, possibly of the iPad Mini and less likely of the iTV.”

Since the start of the year, analysts have been anticipating a smaller iPad, now dubbed the Mini, in time for holiday sales. It’s expected to feature a 7.85-inch display, which would make it somewhat of a thing apart from the true 7-inch form factor that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who passed away last year, so vehemently opposed. It would also address a market that consumers have made clear that they like.

Google recently launched a 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7; Samsung offers its Galaxy Tab in 7- and 8.9-inch models, and has sold more than 10 million of its 5.3-inch Galaxy Note “phablets.”

A smaller iPad would also “unlock demand in Asia,” wrote Misek, where both businesses and consumers want a smaller form factor at a lower price.

Less certain is the timing of an Apple TV, or iTV, another rumored device that has been confirmed by the market but unacknowledged by Apple. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has called the device’s release not a matter of “if” but “when.”

“While we think an iTV will be ready for a [fourth-quarter] launch, we do not know how many major product announcements Apple would want to cram into Sept./Oct./Nov. and see a [first-quarter 2013] launch as possible,” wrote Misek.

Munster has also predicted an early-2013 iTV—as well as forecast that the device will change the way people consume television content.

A 2013 launch would also help to break up the lull in Apple releases until the next iPad and iPhone refresh.

Samsung has reaped the benefits of Apple’s most recent downtime, launching its Galaxy S III in May, bringing it to the United States in June and enjoying strong summer sales. By July, it had sold more than 10 million of the phones, advancing Samsung’s lead as the world’s top-selling phone and smartphone maker. During the second quarter, more than 50 percent of the 90.4 million phones Samsung shipped were smartphones.

Still, Jefferies sees the economic benefits of the advancing markets going to Apple.

“We believe Apple’s product leadership, vertical integration and vast scale mean that it will receive the lion’s share of the economic benefit from the three biggest multi-year trends in technology,” wrote Misek, “smartphones, 4G and tablets.”

iPhone 5 rumors trigger highest Apple stock price ever

It appears that more than just the tip-addicted iOS fans out there are getting their fair share of iPhone 5 madness as Apple stock this week hits an all-time high. This is a big change compared to the week surrounding Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call where their slightly less-than-projected device sales numbers had investors “disappointed.” Now that we’re edging ever closer to what several independent sources have tipped as the announcement date for the new iPhone, investors are prepping for the biggest launch the company has ever seen with ever-increasing prices on Apple’s public offering.

One of the most indicative factors here is the move by Jefferies Co. in raising their price target for the stock from $800 to $900 USD, while Apple’s valuation hits $600 billion in all. With Apple’s notoriously secret ways denying the public a perfect vision for the next-generation handheld smart device, the iPhone 5′s new cycle dominance is somewhat of a phenomenon. It’s no new hat though to Apple.

The Jeffries analyst responsible for the price upgrade earlier today, Peter Misek, described the product launch coming up quick as “the biggest handset launch in history.” With the supposed actual product launch landing before the end of September and each and every single rumor, tip, and supposed leak post here on SlashGear getting massive attention from readers, we can’t say we disagree. No matter what Apple reveals in the next-generation iPhone, it’s bound to make waves.

Apple analyst Gene Munster contributed to the fervor earlier this week with a projection that should Apple release a new iPhone 10 days before the end of September, they’d see sales to the tune of 26 million to 28 million devices sold by the end of the month. At the moment, Apple sits at the current numbers that are sure to make those who are currently holding stock in the company rather joyous:

• Profit margin: 26.97 percent
• Operating margin: 35.62 percent
• Return on equity: 44.32 percent
• Quarterly revenue growth (year-to-year): 22.6 percent
• Gross profit: $43.82 billion

Check the timeline below to see more information on the iPhone 5 – or whatever Apple ends up calling it – and also check out our portals for the iPad and the Apple TV to see what other rumors on Apple devices have been cropping up. With massive cults of rumor spreaders like Apple has now, it’s no wonder they need such heavy defenses, and no wonder why there’s such great anticipation for final product launches, too!

Would You Flip For The iPhone 5 If It Looked Like This?

When Bastiaan de Jong, of the Dutch animation firm 3D-desk sent me a visualization of the next iPhone, I was expecting something like what you now see above. Instead, it showed a phone with the same screen size as the current iPhone, but considerably slimmer. I immediately asked him if they would be doing a version based on the rumored taller screen and he let me know they would and that He would send it to me first. Well, here it is!

A quick follow-up question for all of Adrian Kingsley-Hughes‘s readers — if the iPhone 5 is taller and sleeker, like the one prototyped in this video, would you buy it? But more than that, would you flip for it, like in this animation?

I wrote last week that the “leaked” designs were underwhelming, that it looked like Apple was “phoning it in.” But when you see see the new designs in scale and in the context of the iPhone 4S, some appealing things become apparent.

First, the new iPhone looks kind of like an iPhone on it way to becoming a TV remote, which is an interesting association considering the news that Apple is rumored to be negotiating with the big cable companies about replacing their set-top boxes with next-generation Apple TV boxes.

Second, the combination of the thinness (and its commensurate lightness) and its tallness, make for a very sleek and elegant product. The Samsung Galaxy SIII (see video simulation below) looks positively barrel-like and cartoonish by comparison.

Third, the feeling of bezel is going away, making the whole face feel like a screen, a progression that each generation of iPhones has moved along.

So the question is not, “Will you buy it?” Of course, a record number of us will. People have been holding off on their iPhone purchases and now the demand is well pent up. The question is, “Will you love it?”
