Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One and iPhone 5 face off as T3 Awards 2013 open

Voting for the prestigious T3 Awards has opened, and the headline awards will see giant products from Apple, Samsung, HTC and Sony facing off to win themselves a gong on 3 October.

The longlists serve as an exciting glimpse into what the movers and shakers of the past 12 months of tech have brought and its no surprise to see the likes of Google Glass, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Sky+ HD 2TB all getting a nod.

TechRadar readers are always heavily invested in the Smartphone of the Year category and with the site’s UK Editor-in-chief Patrick Goss once again judging we’ll be getting involved in the argument over whether the S4, HTC One, Sony Xperia Z or the Apple iPhone 5 deserve the plaudits.

Gadget of the Year

Gadget of the Year brings the Kindle Fire HD from Amazon, the iPad Mini and, perhaps surprisingly, the Wii U battling for supremacy with some other outstanding candidates, and there are new categories in the shape of Car of the Year and Tech Moment of the Year.

T3 editor Luke Peters says: “With technology continuing to advance at a rate of knots and becoming more entwined with consumers’ everyday lifestyles, 2013 is going to be an exciting year for the T3 Gadget Awards. Cutting-edge products, brands and people need to be recognised and our industry-leading event is the perfect showcase for that.”

With a 175-strong longlist of nominees across 17 categories (with two special Awards to be given on the night), voting is now open at http://www.t3.com/awards.

The pared-down T3 Gadget Awards 2013 Shortlist is to be announced on 18 July when, after intensive judging, each category will be stripped to six, apart from Gadget of the Year, which will drop to 10.

The final winners are settled by a final round of voting by readers and T3′s own judging panel of eight, and will be announced at the T3 Gadget Awards 2013 ceremony at Old Billingsgate, London on 3 October.

Here are two of the biggest categories, but make sure you check out all the awards and candidates and cast your vote.

  • HTC One

The HTC One is probably the most beautiful smartphone on the market – and is also the most intelligently designed. With twin, front-facing speakers it’s the best choice for watching movies, and its 4MP ‘Ultra Pixel’ camera punches above its meagre pixel-count suggests.

  • iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S is now two years old. But it’s still an extremely attractive choice for many. It’s small, well-made and has decent specs able to run pretty much any app at a fair old clip. The screen is still excellent, and best of all you can get some very fine deals on contract, with a free phone and reduced monthly service costs.

  • Sony Xperia Z

Sony’s a href=”http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/01/08/sony-xperia-z-can-be-used_n_2430192.html” target=”_blank”flagship smartphone is impressively huge/a – in all the right ways. The 5-inch screen feels larger than it is thanks to a small bezel, deep blacks and the device’s very thin profile.a href=”http://gdgt.com/sony/xperia/z/specs/” target=”_blank” Its 13-megapixel camera is very good/a, and the fact that the phone is waterproof is also quite neat – it’s the only smartphone you can use in the bath.

  • Google LG Nexus 4

    LG’s a href=”http://gdgt.com/lg/nexus/4/” target=”_blank”Nexus 4/a is a Google-branded phone, and it shows. • Samsung Note II

The a href=”http://gdgt.com/samsung/galaxy/note/ii/specs/” target=”_blank”/aSamsung Galaxy Note II is an extremely big device. In fact, it’s massive. With a 5.5-inch display and an included S-Pen for accurate, tactile note-taking, a href=”http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/08/30/samsung-galaxy-note-ii-review_n_1842384.html” target=”_blank”it’s somewhere between a phone and a tablet/a (though don’t use ‘phablet’, it’s an awful word. Yes, you’ll look stupid talking into it. But with a phone this powerful, will you care?

  • iPhone 5

The a href=”http://gdgt.com/apple/iphone/5/” target=”_blank”iPhone 5/a was not revolutionary in the same way as its predecessors – but a href=”http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/10/03/iphone-5-review-5-reasons-to-hate-the-new-iphone_n_1935530.html” target=”_blank”it’s still one of the best phones ever made/a, and iOS is still many people’s favourite mobile OS. It’s shockingly thin and light, has a tremendous screen and a solid camera – plus the App Store’s unmatched selection of third-party software.

  • Motorola RAZR HD

The Razr HD is a solid, well-specced smartphone. It won’t compete with the HTC One or S4 in terms of fasion – or raw specifications. Buta href=”http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/04/30/uk-motorola-razr-hd-review_n_3184929.html” target=”_blank” for a decent, hard-wearing, handsome phone/a at a slightly lower cost than those headline-grabbing rivals, a href=”http://gdgt.com/motorola/droid/razr-hd/” target=”_blank”it’s a solid choice./a

  • Nokia Lumia 920

a href=”http://gdgt.com/nokia/lumia/920/” target=”_blank”The Nokia Lumia 920/a distinguishes itself from the competition in two main ways. First it has some stand-out features including wireless charging, a camera with exceptional lowlight performance and a touchscreen that works even when you’re wearing gloves. Second, it runs Windows Phone 8 – which will put off many, but is a solid and connected platform lacking apps but boasting a simplicity of design that Android and iOS occasionally struggle to match.

Apple’s Tight Control Over Components Keeping iPhone 5 Repair Costs High

iphone_5_display_assembly_whiteMarketWatch takes a look at the state of the repair industry for the iPhone 5, noting that costs for display replacements remain very high eight months after the device’s launch in the United States. The report points to Apple’s tight control over components as being the major contributor to high costs, even as the device’s new design makes it simpler to replace the display than on previous models.

There is a tight control on iPhone 5 components in the market, [repair firm iCracked founder AJ] Forsythe says. “Market forces determine the price,” he says. “Apple sells about 300,000 iPhones a day and, as the repair market grows, prices will get lower.”

“Apple controls everything from the manufacturing to the gear for the iPhone 5,” says Jeff Haynes, editor at deal site TechBargains.com. As the iPhone 5 is larger than the 4, the cost for replacement parts rises, he says.

The display is the most frequently cited repair item on the iPhone, given the frequency with which users break the glass front of the device, and it is also the most costly component.

For the iPhone 4S, repair firm iFixit currently sells the display assembly for $95, with users needing to follow a difficult 37-step guide to perform the repair. On the iPhone 5, iFixit is charging $200 for the corresponding part, with the white version not even available at this time. But for those who can get their hands on the part, the replacement process requires only a 23-step guide judged “moderate” in difficulty.

The report notes that many repair firms have even not yet begun offering iPhone 5 display replacements, due to both the shortage of parts in the market and the high costs. Apple itself frequently performs repairs by swapping out the user’s device, then putting the damaged device through a refurbishment process and reselling it at a discounted price.

Recognizing the prevalence of accidental damage issues with its mobile devices, Apple rolled out an AppleCare+ extended warranty plan alongside the iPhone 4S in October 2011. The $99 plan extends warranty coverage to two years and includes coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage with $49 deductibles. The plan is not, however, universally available throughout Apple’s global sales footprint yet.

Apple is said to be planning to revamp its AppleCare offerings later this year, with Apple reportedly moving to perform more repairs on iPhones rather than simply swapping them out. The company is also said to be transitioning AppleCare into a subscription agreement that would cover multiple devices owned by a customer, rather than having to purchase coverage separately for each device.

iPhone 6, iPhone 5S Release Date in 2014? Top 5 Killer Features You Would …

It seems that the reports on the delayed release date of Apple products proved to be true. A number of analysts claimed that Apple’s smartphones are delayed due to “production issues”. However, recent reports also claimed that Chinese suppliers already received the components needed in building the iPhones.

Moreover, there are a lot of other speculations on why Apple is delaying the release date of its flagship phone. Some of these are suicide cases of the employees of Foxconn, which is the partner of Apple in China and is in charge of the mass production of the devices.

Rumour has it that the next iPhone will feature Retina or IGZO screen display, A7 quad core chip processor, iOS 7, 128GB internal storage, 13 mega-pixel camera, and longer battery life. The lack of NFC support on the iPhone 5 was one of the biggest criticisms aimed at Apple’s smartphone.

Meanwhile, the cheaper iPhone 5S is rumoured to sport a plastic casing, 4-inch screen display, dual core processor and 8-megapixel camera.

It is initially reported that the new iPhones will be launched in June along with the upgraded iOS. However, other reports stated that the devices will make its debut in September.

However, Apple did not give an official statement on the rumours surrounding iPhone 6 and iPhone 5S.

Below are some of the top 5 killer features that many consumers wished they would see in the indefinite launching date of Apple’s smartphone.

Corning Lotus XT Glass with Sharp IGZO Screen Display – It seems that Apple want to give its consumers the best viewing pleasure in their smartphones. The fusion of Corning Lotus XT Glass and Sharp IGZO will give users crisp images and the strength in their screens.

DSLR-like Camera – Amateur and professional photographers will be delighted with the new feature of iPhone 6. The patent shows a system that would allow the iPhone to remotely control other illuminating hardware, which is a similar thing that professional photographers do when taking images with a camera.

Fingerprint Sensor – It is reported that Apple is planning to include a fingerprint sensor in Apple devices for added security.

Smarter Control Features – A new approved patent from Apple will enable users to operate their devices with mere scratches or tap gesturing. The patent discusses acoustic input devices and basically means that iOS devices could also be used with sound inputs that would be transmitted via the casing that would then correspond with certain functions.

Wireless Charging – A new concept of iPhone is making the rounds showing the device capable of wireless charging. One of the most common complaints with Apple devices like iPhone is the fast depleting battery. However, with wireless charging, users will enjoy longer battery life.

Designed by M’s AL13 Aluminum Bumper Is For The iPhone 5 Purist

Designed by M started the development of the AL13 aluminum bumper case as a Kickstarter project asking for US$20,000. Within one week US$86,250 had been pledged. The iPhone 5 purists who wanted to protect their phones without adding a clunky case were obviously interested. I asked Lester Mapp, the creator of this product, what prompted the development. I doubted that he could have foreseen so much interest prior to putting it out on Kickstarter. Mr. Mapp responded:

“Before we developed AL13, we were all pretty anti-case when it came to our own iPhones. We just hadn’t found anything out there that we thought complimented the phone. We wanted to make something that could offer some level of protection but still wouldn’t change the look of the phone. The whole point of having an iPhone…is having an iPhone…not something that used to look like an iPhone before you put a case on it. Apple spent lots of time and money making the iPhone thinner and lighter, so why would you want to cover it up with something that would add bulk and weight? AL13 is slim, extremely lightweight and built to blend in with the look of the iPhone.

AL-13 Bumper iPhone 5 case

The bumper is made from lightweight aerospace aluminum. It has an anodized finish and chamfered (symmetrical sloping) edges that matches the look of the iPhone 5. It is lined on the inside to protect the phone and weighs only 14 grams.

Side view of bumper compared to iPhone 5

The case is composed of two pieces, the bumper itself, and a sliding cover that glides on and locks in place. Once locked in place, it is somewhat difficult to remove. The product includes a protective film for the back and an anti-scratch, anti-fingerprint and anti-glare polyurethane screen protector.

Sliding cover and bumper

Back view of bumper and sliding cover locked in place

The bumper is available in gun metal, slate black, blue, silver, and red. The black bumper on the black phone is virtually invisible.

The Packaging

This product has very unusual packaging. It is striking and very attractive. It arrives nestled in a metal box with a sliding lid.

Package – partially opened

I complimented Mr. Mapp on the packaging, but asked what effect it has on the price of the product. His response was interesting:

“AL13 is a premium product and we felt that the packaging should reflect that. Other bumpers of a similar quality retail for almost $150… and you don’t get that kind of packaging. AL13 is priced at $79. For that price you get not only a high quality product made with great craftsmanship and extreme attention to detail, you get a cool reusable metal case that you can store cables and headphones in when you travel, or just use as additional desk storage. We really wanted to give our customers a “wow” experience, so that they feel they have gotten value for the money they spent.

He is correct that the box, which measures 4 x 6 x 1.5-inches (10.2 x 15.2 x 3.8 cm) can be used in numerous ways.

Using the Product

The design of this case makes it extremely easy to install. You just gently lay the phone in the bumper, lining up the holes appropriately, and then slide on the cover until it clicks in place. The cover is basically invisible to the point that I did not even realize there were two parts when I first picked it up.

When I had to remove the case, which I have to do because of my job, it was hard to do without scratching my phone, but I assume the normal user will not face this problem.

Once the case was in place, it was quite difficult to tell that a bumper was being used unless I looked on the back of the iPhone where there is a slight overlap. Of course, had I been testing a red one, it would have been more noticeable.

Do I Recommend it?

I do. If iPhone 5 purity is part of your consciousness, then I believe you will know you have found your solution, and it is certainly well designed and well made. You will not have to worry about the bumper coming off, and it offers good corner protection.

Acase Collatio For iPhone 5: A Great Wallet Case At A Great Price [Review]

Collatio-Acase-1

The BookBook from Twelve South has long been the best and most luxurious leather wallet case for iPhone, but it has a new contender from Acase that wants to steal its crown. It’s called the Collatio, and in many ways, it’s very similar to the BookBook.

As well as holding your iPhone 5, the Collatio holds up to three credit cards, and features a larger pocket for bills, receipts, and anything else you’d like to stuff in there. It provides access to all of your iPhone’s buttons and ports — though you will need to open it up to use the volume buttons and mute switch — plus its front- and rear-facing cameras.

The biggest difference between the Collatio and the BookBook, however, is the price. While Twelve South’s offering will cost you $60, the Collatio is just $40. But is it as good?

The Good

The Collatio is certainly just as pretty — if not prettier — than the BookBook. I’m actually a big fan of the BookBook’s vintage book look, but if you’re not, then that’s one point to the Collatio. It comes in brown and it’s made entirely from genuine leather.

Collatio-Acase-2

The Collatio looks good from every angle.

The front and back covers are shiny, while the spine is a softer chamois-like leather. It looks smart and sophisticated and exactly how you’d like a leather wallet case to look. There’s a small Acase emblem on the bottom corner that I wish wasn’t there, but it doesn’t look too bad.

The Collatio feels comfortable in your pocket, and even more comfortable in your hand. It’s soft and smooth, and its spine provides plenty of grip. It’s also very flexible, so you can fold the front cover around to the back when typing or taking a call, and when you close the Collatio’s front cover it stays closed — it doesn’t stick up like the BookBook tends to.

Inside the Collatio you’ll find three credit card pockets, plus a larger pocket for cash. You could probably cram more cards into those pockets if you want to, but it makes them harder to remove, so it’s easier to just stick one in each.

Your iPhone is held inside a leather frame that covers the sides of your devices, plus the bezels above and below the display — though the home button, speaker, and front-facing camera are left exposed. Nothing secures the iPhone in place, but the leather is tight enough to stop it slipping out.

The Collatio’s build quality is fantastic… a lot of care has clearly gone into its production.

On the back of the case, you’ll find one cutout for your rear-facing camera. It’s just about big enough, and I didn’t notice any reflection issues when taking pictures with the flash.

The Collatio’s build quality is fantastic. It’s made from high-quality leathers and a lot of care has clearly gone into its production. The sticking looks clean and tidy, and it’s super strong. The Collatio isn’t immune to a few scratches, but they add life to the case, and you’ll find a used Collatio looks better than a brand new one.

Collatio-Acase-3

The Bad

Although the Callatio stays closed on your desk, the front cover isn’t fixed down, so if you drop your iPhone there’s a chance it’ll flap open and leave your display exposed.

The cutout for the mute switch is nowhere near big enough — my mute switch is mostly covered up.

This wasn’t a major issue for me. Having magnets inside the case to keep it closed, or some kind of fastener, only adds bulk and weight and makes it harder to get to your device. But it’s something to bear in mind.

One thing that did bother me was the leather frame that holds the iPhone inside the case. It works well for the most part, but the cutout for the mute switch is nowhere near big enough — my mute switch is mostly covered up, and it’s really difficult to use.

The back.

In fact, I’ve gotten used to just folding the leather back at the side to get to the switch, but over time that’s caused it to stretch and go a little slack, as you’ll see from some of the pictures showing the inside of the case.

The other issue I had with this leather frame is that it’s not easy to get your iPhone out once it’s in there. There’s no pull tab like the original BookBook had, so you have to put your iPhone up from its base… only there isn’t really enough room to get your thumbs in there.

Removing your iPhone from the Collatio once it’s in there, then, is a bit of a struggle. I would have much preferred it if Acase used the same plastic housing that Twelve South used in its latest BookBook case. Not only is it easier, but it’s not as bulky, either.

The Verdict

I’ve mentioned before that I like iPhone wallet cases, and the Collatio is one of my favorites. It looks terrific, its build quality is great, and it does everything you want a wallet case to do.

I’d much prefer a plastic iPhone holder rather than a leather one, but then again, I think I’d happily live with the leather for the $20 saving the Collatio brings.

If you’re looking for a great leather wallet case for your iPhone 5, definitely check out the Collatio.

Product Name: Collatio
The Good: Looks great, feels great, and is very nicely priced.
The Bad: Leather iPhone holder is a little fiddly.
The Verdict: At $20 cheaper than the BookBook, the Collatio will be a better buy for many. It’s one of the best wallet cases I’ve tested to date.

iPhone 6 release date with contract deliberation

iPhone 6 release date with contract deliberation pic 1

I want to upgrade half way through my contract but cannot without spending a fortune? Should I buy the iPhone 5 or wait for the 5S, or should I just wait for the iPhone 6? These questions arise often and this has steered us onto the iPhone 6 release date with contract deliberation, and about buying a new iPhone now or playing the waiting game.

As we all know the iPhone 5S will probably be a refresh of the 8-month old iPhone 5 with a few more features, and now is the time to really think hard if it is worth purchasing your iPhone 5 now or is it more practical to wait for the next release.

Even though the iPhone 5S is expected to release this year it will look like the iPhone 5 with spec tweaks on the inside, so if it were a choice we had to make we would wait until 2014 for the iPhone 6, but everyone has a choice.

If you are considering buying the iPhone 5 because you really like it then wait a few more months and get the new iPhone 5S, the reason for doing this is simple, if you decide to purchase the iPhone 5 now on contract you will not be entitled to the iPhone 5S this year or the iPhone 6 next year because you will be stuck in a 2-year contract, which most contracts of today are about 2 years, unless you decide to break the contract and pay the difference in what you still owe.

Should I buy the iPhone 5 now or wait for the iPhone 5S or wait longer for the iPhone 6?

The iPhone 5 is a stunning phone, but like most smartphones it comes with its problems, but these are teething ones. It is a stunning smartphone with a lot of capabilities, and if you really want to purchase an iPhone 5 right now we would suggest wait it out and get the 5S, and if you already have the iPhone 5 and want the 5S we would suggest waiting for the 6 as this will be a lot different in terms of specs and technology.

You buy a new iPhone 5 today May 22, 2013 and you take out a new 2-year contract, this means you will have to wait until May 22, 2015 before you can upgrade leaving you missing out on the iPhone 5S, and if the iPhone 6 releases in 2014 you will miss out on this phone as well unless you adopt the early upgrade, and this will not be cheap.

iPhone 5 is old hat now
The iPhone 5 is no longer a new smartphone on the market, it is 8 months old, the iPhone 5S will probably feature iOS 7 but then this would be available for the iPhone 5, but the build quality on the 5S will be better than the 5. In simple terms, wait for the iPhone 5S if you really want to own an iPhone.

Carriers such as T-Mobile for example offer early upgrade options and if you are still in contract this does not mean you cannot get the new iPhone 5S when it releases, T-Mobile mentions that customers can pick the phone they want and they will give you a 25% discount on the monthly payments you have, they will recycle your phone for extra cash etc.

As we know when the iPhone 5S releases the carriers will open their doors to new customers, buying customers and those that are eligible for an upgrade.

New iPhone Customer
Wait for the iPhone 5S and do not purchase the iPhone 5, you will still have to play the waiting game for the iPhone 6 expected in 2014 if you are on a 2-year contract.

iPhone 5 Customer
If you plan on getting the iPhone 5S on contract once it releases we suggest waiting for the iPhone 6, there is not going to be major difference with the 5S. iOS 7 is what will change the iPhone 5S and current iPhone 5. Ok, so the new iPhone 5S will have a few more specs and maybe it will be a little faster, not hardly worth writing home about is it?

Customer already in a contract
If you are an owner of any phone including the iPhone 5 and you still have a running contract and wish to get the iPhone 5S, then be willing to wait 2-years before you can get your hands on the iPhone 6. Yes you can break your contract but be ready to dig into your pockets.

Please let us know if you will be getting the iPhone 5S or if you will be waiting for the iPhone 6?
