iPad 5, iPad Mini 2 With Retina to Start Production In July
By Miss PProduction rumors for the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 are ratcheting up, suggesting that a thinner iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 with retina display — both sporting new form factors — will begin production in July, with a release date sometime in the late summer or early fall. With a refreshed iPhone 5S on the way in 2013, will this year be a bigger year for Apple’s tablet than its smartphone?
Tim Cook indicated that consumers can expect huge surprises from Apple by late 2013. The rumors are swirling for the new iPad mini 2 and iPad 5. Apple consumers: are you shocked? *cough cough* I am not — it seems these days Apple always releases new products in the fall. I certainly hope for HUGE surprises and not HUGE let downs. Computers have been getting all of the attention lately, and folks over at Cuptertino seem to be reaching for ideas (check out my colleague Anna Tan’s article today on rumored iWatch production).
The good news is that we’re beginning to hear some good stuff about both a thinner iPad 5 and maybe even an iPad Mini 2 with Retina display going into production soon. Here’s what we’re hearing:
According to reports, production for the iPad mini 2 and the iPad 5 will start in July, featuring partners with South Korea’s LG and Japan’s Sharp. While both giants are getting ready to get their hands on these new Apple tablet toys, AU Optronics might get the boot. AU Optronics helped Apple in the past, but they are coming up short when it comes to passing the retina production test.
There has been much talk over a new faster processor and retina display for the new generation iPad mini. I know that has to happen — it just has to. Although the iPad Mini is a cost-effective iPad option meant for the masses, its sales have effectively cannibalized the tablet market, and even geeks are buying them. Gotta make the geeks happy, and geeks like us are going to want a more upscale, high-performance Mini, complete with Retina display and faster chips.
I personally didn’t take the plunge to get the iPad mini, due to the specs being similar to the 1st-2nd generation iPad in a smaller package. It is like wanting something so bad for Christmas and realizing that the toy was the same as last year’s. I love the size, but there weren’t enough features to woo me.
The iPad 5 rumors deal with huge hardware changes, since the current models have only slimmed overtime. The iPad is due for some major plastic surgery. Most tablets are small and compact, which is why Apple jumped on the “mini” bandwagon to keep up with the competition. Unfortunately the bigger tablet feels like a small brick, the rumors state that Apple will change to a slimmer profile. If only Apple would add an option for expandable memory the world would be a much better place. At the very least, it looks like we’ll see a new form factor for the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2, perhaps with a thinner bezel and new metal back, bringing them in line with the look of the iPhone 5.
I always anticipate Apple keynotes, but I want the days of oooh and ahhh to return to Apple. Hopefully we’ll get some of that with the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.

Four ways Samsung can improve Galaxy S4 sales over iPhone 5
In light of the stunning news that the new Galaxy S4 is being outsold in its first month by the aging iPhone 5, Samsung has a problem. The Galaxy S line is the only portion of Samsung’s Android lineup which has ever seen significant sales, its new flagship Galaxy S4 is underperforming during what should be the height of its popularity. Samsung needs to make moves quickly to turn this around before the window for S4 momentum closes and it’s stuck with disappointing sales until the next generation. Here are four swift moves Samsung can make to improve sales and turn things around.
Fix the pricing: The iPhone 5 sells for $199 or less from all four major carriers. But the Galaxy S4 sells for as much as $249 from some carriers. Sure, its a new device. But U.S. consumers are accustomed to seeing flagship smartphones sell at two hundred dollar mark. Samsung must lean on the carriers to bring their S4 pricing uniformly below that mark.
Unbloat the system software: The standard sixteen gigabyte Galaxy S4 model comes with half of that space, eight gigabytes, taken up by preinstalled software. The Android install itself only takes up a couple gigabytes, and the rest consists of self promotional apps Samsung included which have been mostly banned by reviewers. Slim down that list so Galaxy S4 early adopters stop complaining about not being able to fit the apps and music they migrated from their S3, and turn around the negative word of mouth.
Ditch the ads: Samsung’s new ads for the Galaxy S4 are everywhere. They’re airing on television, even at the movie theaters before air time. They’re obnoxious, painting the S4 as being only for people who are too hip to be hipsters. And they’re at least partly fictional, promoting “new” Galaxy S4 features it says the the iPhone 5 doesn’t have, when in fact the iPhone has had some of those features for years. Fire the advertising firm and perhaps the entire marketing department, and come up with new ads which accurately promote the best new features of the Galaxy S4, The current ads, which make fun of the iPhone 5 for things that the iPhone 5 is in fact better at, are doing more harm than good.
Make it smaller: The Galaxy S3 was popular at 4.8 inches, and so Samsung moved that up to a nice round number, five inches, for the Galaxy S4. But it may finally have crossed the line where bigger is now too big. Are consumers taking a pass on the S4 because its larger dimensions mean it no longer fits in their hand? There’s no way to be sure, other than to release a Galaxy S4 mini at around four inches and to see the greater choice helps boost sales.
Galaxy S4 sales aren’t bad so far. They’re just nowhere near where they were expected to be. Samsung has a significant amount of brand equity built up in the Galaxy S line. It simply has to figure out how to tweak the Galaxy S4 in terms of suitability and perception to get those sales up above those of the iPhone 5, where we all thought they’d be.

Latest Nokia Lumia 928 ad directly attacks iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4
We heard this morning from the Windows Phone marketing head Greg Sullivan that Microsoft is being more aggressive with their marketing.
The result of this initiative can clearly be seen in this ad showing the low-light capability of the Nokia Lumia 928, which ends with the narrator saying very clearly “Better than the iPhone, better than the Galaxy S4”.
Such a direct attack on the other phones is sure to rankle with some, but will likely earn Microsoft extra publicity for going on the offensive.
What do our readers think of the ad? Let us know below.

Verizon Offers $99 iPhone 5 Deal to Select Customers
by Anna TanLast week, Verizon caused quite a stir when it slashed $100 off the price of their iPhone 5 on their website for a brief time. Soon after, Verizon confirmed the exclusive price cut deal on their iPhone 5, making it available on-contract at $99, down from the original price of $199.99.
The price drop could be a strategy that effectively tugs on consumers who are on the fence about their next smart phone purchase: to wait for the impending iPhone 5S release, to buy a competing device, or to just go ahead and buy the currently available iPhone 5. The last option, now ringing louder bells, thanks to Verizon’s bold markdown.
The price change on the network provider’s website soon reverted back to the original, however, making the public wonder if this was just a glitch or possibly a hint at what’s to come for Verizon. Gotta Be Mobile got to the bottom of things and received confirmation from the network that it was no error, and that there really is an ongoing iPhone 5 promo at $99. This promo however, runs only until the 30th of June, and is exclusive to clients who’ve been labelled as individuals who are trying to transition into owning a smart phone.
According to Gotta Be Mobile:
Those customers will be receiving an email alerting them to the deal which knocks off $100 from the usual price of the iPhone 5. Verizon tells us that many “basic phone customers are interested in moving to a smartphone and the iPhone 5 is an ideal solution for those customers. This promotion gives customers an affordable option to help them make the transition.”
Although Verizon did not elaborate on how exactly they would select which clients to make the offer to, they clarified that only customers on basic phones that express interest in upgrading to the iPhone 5 would receive the email alert.
It would appear that the plan appears to be in line with Michael Nace’s previous post about the Verizon iPhone 5 sale, back when the sale was rumored to be coming, as a means of hedging against a slowdown in iPhone sales ahead of the WWDC. In the past, iPhone sales have suffered as a result of rumors and buzz — this promotion by Verizon appears to be the company’s newest strategy to keep iPhone sales steady through the summer.

Surprise: the aging iPhone 5 is outselling shiny new Galaxy S4
The new Galaxy S4 has been outsold in its first month on the market by the aging iPhone 5 in a surprise to, well, pretty much everyone. Samsung revealed this week that it’s already shipped ten million Galaxy S4 units to resellers within the first month, but while the nice round number sounds impressive out of context, doing the math reveals a different picture. The iPhone 5 had a far bigger launch last fall than the Galaxy S4 is having now. And for that matter the nine month old iPhone 5 is still outselling the Galaxy S4, which must have Samsung wondering where it went wrong with its new product even as Apple breathes a sigh of relief.
Samsung, along with BlackBerry and some other competitors, prefers to announce how many units of a new product it’s shipped to retailers instead of how many have reached customers’ hands, because “shipped” is initially a far larger number than “sold.” With retailers, carriers, and online resellers initially stocking up on a highly touted new product in quantity, and millions of units in the channel at any given time, it’s a fair estimate that half or less of those initial shipments have turned to sales. So if the Galaxy S4 has sold five million or fewer units in its first month, that stacks up poorly against the fact that the iPhone 5 sold that many units in its first five days in the market.
But a disappointing launch may be the least of Samsung’s troubles with the Galaxy S4. The most recent numbers from Apple and the carriers point to the iPhone 5, while not as popular as it was in its earlier days, still selling around six million units per month. That means the iPhone 5, so over the hill that Apple will bargain-bin it this summer and replace it with something newer, is still outselling the brand new and shiny Galaxy S4. With none of Samsung’s other smartphones like the Note having ever been significant sellers, the bulk of Samsung’s smartphone sales and revenue have always come from the Galaxy S line. Back when the iPhone 5 was outselling the Galaxy S3 by a two to one margin, it was chalked up to the fact that the iPhone 5 was newer, under the assumption that the Galaxy S4 would reverse those numbers once it arrived. Now that the S4 is here and the iPhone 5 is still outselling it during what should be the cyclical peak for the Galaxy and the cyclical bottom for the iPhone, Samsung has to be scratching its head trying to figure out how its lone mobile cash cow is getting slaughtered by the same iPhone 5 it’s been making fun of in commercials.

Wonderfull Jailbreak iPhone 5 4S iOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.4
Jailbreak-Team.com officially released Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3 unto the public today, and we knew it would patch up the infamous Evasi0n jailbreak, meaning that if you update your iPhone 5 or other newer iOS device to Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak and won’t be able to go back. However, another jailbreak method has been released, and it works on Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3 on older iOS devices.
The jailbreak comes to us Jailbreak-Team.com, and it only applies to iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 devices running an A4 processor. It’s also a tethered-only jailbreak, meaning that you’ll have connect your iOS device to your computer each time you want to boot up your device, which can be a pain sometimes. The jailbreak isn’t compatible with any iPad, including the first-generation iPad (although iOS 6 isn’t even available for this iPad anyway).
Of course, it’s still best to remain on Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3 that way you don’t lose your untethered jailbreak. Plus, there could be a few jailbreak tweaks that you use that may not be compatible with Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3, so it’s always best to wait in that case as well. However, if you accidentally updated to the latest version that rolled out today, there’s still hope with this Redsn0w jailbreak
To Jailbreak your iPhone 5/4/4S/3GS iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 and 6.1.2/6.0.2 visit the official website http://www.Jailbreak-Team.com
This specific jailbreak tweak works on the iPhone 5/4/4S/3GS iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. You’ll need the Redsn0w software and the iOS 6.0 IPSW file for the jailbreak. From there, it’s just a matter of opening up Redsn0w and installing the various files necessary for the jailbreak. Again, this is a tethered jailbreak, so if you need to reboot, you’ll have to plug in your device to your computer and fire up Redsn0w to get it past the Apple boot-up logo.
As a user of all recent jailbreak tools, I have to say Evasi0n was probably the best to date. A culmination of some of the finest brains in the jailbreaking community, not only was it a slick app offering a seamless jailbreak, but thereafter, problems were rare and affected very few people. Moreover, the support by means of updates through Cydia was second to none, and although Apple finally halted things with Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3, it has been a fantastic journey.
The Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1.4/6.1.3 untethered jailbreak has now become a reality, thanks to the hard work from those involved in the newly formed Evad3rs jailbreak team. The release of the new userland-based Evasi0n jailbreak tool means that users now have an extremely efficient way of making a complicated background process seem extremely simple.
Supported devices:
As mentioned in our previous post, Evasi0n supports all 20+ variants of iOS devices, including the likes of iPhone 5, 4S, 4, 3GS on iOS 6.1.3 through iOS 6.1.4. Apple TV 3 though is not supported.

Speck CandyShell Grip for iPhone 5: “Oooh that’s nice” [Review]
I admit it, the title for this review is somewhat unorthodox, but there are two reasons for it. Firstly, both myself and my wife upon picking up the iPhone for the first time with the Speck CandyShell Grip on said those exact words, independently of each other. In truth, it perfectly encapsulates the experience of using it. If I tried to describe it in more detail, I’d run out of space and superlatives to come close to describing just how great the CandyShell Grip is.
Firstly, there’s the design. The case is made from a combination of polycarbonate and rubber, but it’s not two separate parts. The rubber is fused perfectly in the corners and coats the inside of the shell, as well as forming grippy strips on the back. It not only provides shock resistance, it adds grip in your palm and ensures that the case forms a tight fit around your iPhone. Most of the outside surface is a hard and shiny polycarbonate which curves around the edges to provide a very comfortable feel. It’s available in a whole host of colors, so if you don’t like the coral/blue one I’m rocking, there are many more combinations to choose from.
There are a couple of features on here that make it very noteworthy. Features that would normally go unnoticed, or skimmed over in other reviews, that Speck has paid a great amount of attention to. Firstly, the cutouts around all the ports and buttons are so precise. Unlike most other manufacturers, Speck decided not to leave a big gaping hole on the bottom, or put square cutouts around everything. Instead, the mute button has its own perfectly sized cutout with slanted edges, as does the camera, Lightning port and headset jack. The speaker and microphone are covered, but have individually machined holes matching those on the device. This ensures that everything that possibly can be protected, is.
Secondly, the button covers. They are perfect. You get just the right amount of give and resistance when you click the volume buttons and power button. In fact, it barely feels like they’re covered at all, and yet they are, with a good thickness of rubber.
From the slightly raised edges, through comfortable grip, and awesome design, there’s nothing to fault on the Grip. It’s fantastic. So much so that through every single sentence writing this brief overview, I had to resist the urge to type “just buy it, it’s freaking awesome!”
If you want to buy one for yourself, they cost £29.99 from CoversandCases.com, and if you use code “TODAY10″ at checkout to get 10% off ANYTHING in store.
To check out more detail on the case, hit Speck’s product page.

Good News For all iPhone owners of iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4 may have fixed the Exchange calendar bug that was eating batteries like tapeworm, but it looks as though it still hasn’t prevented the Jailbreak-Team.com tool from offering an untethered jailbreak iPhone 5,4S,4,3GS iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4. The jailbreak guru and member at www.Jailbreak-Team.com has tweeted the good news that his iPhone 5 is jailbreakable on iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4, and although he has yet to test other devices, it’s unlikely they’ll throw up any nasty surprises. Before going through any jailbreak process with Unlock-Jailbreak it is always good housekeeping to perform a full backup of all information on Unlock/Jailbreak iPhone 5/4S/4/3GS iOS 6.1/6.1.3/6.1.4/6.0.2/6.0.1 Untethered the device. It is unlikely that anything will go wrong during the process but when undertaking any process that modifies the internals of a file system it is always prudent to err on the side of caution.
This is most certainly a rarity. Usually, whenever a jailbreak is released, Apple works to deliver an update to prevent it, and the next iOS release is thus unjailbreakable. However, a couple of timely bugs have emerged which, from a PR point of view, are a tad more pressing, and following on from the release of Jailbreak-Team.com to jailbreak the iPhone it’s likely a similar update has arrived for them to work with iOS 6.1.3/6.1.4.
Team Unlock-Jailbreak was established few years ago, combines some of the jailbreak and unlock community’s most talented developers all known for producing reliable jailbreaks in the past. This team was assembled in order to develop a reliable untethered jailbreak and unlock iphone 5,4S,4 iOS 6.1/6.1.3/6.1.4 for post-A5 devices, including the iPhone 5, the iPad mini and the latest-generation iPad. This has now been achieved with the just-released userland jailbreak tool, known as Unlock-Jailbreak.net.
